Fantastic image Richpips! - never seen as many 'big' cameras over such an area.
A marshall's muse
Well done to all for competing, especially to Jebby for such a fantastic win.
Decided to do my bit and give back.
So here are my thoughts......
Yes I would like to ride it every year but don't we all, and gone are the days when once we get older we help, goddamit, we all want to ride. I guess John could get major sponsors in and pay for helpers, but do we really want that?
So John placed me and (another) John at that horrible road junction just near Ingleton, yuk!
Most motorists very pleasant and accomodating even tho John had told us we're not to stop the traffic, oooooooooops. Only one tw*t in a 4wd truckette (it was that small, proabably as small as his..), and surprisingly a few of the support vehicles with spare cross bikes and things on the roof/back, shame on you, selfish c*cks!
Most of you, very kind and supportive and greatful, thx.
Two knobs on bikes throwing litter down (a Go wrapper and some Capri-Sun oragnge juice drink), if I could get your numbers I'd ensure you don't ride again in this event, extremely disrespectful expecting someone who is giving their time to help this event happen to be expected to wipe your ar5e5!
One of my friends was talking to me whilst I was trying to concentrate on you lot and the traffic, shuddup, I'm a bloke, cannot multi task!
Top 3 questions of the day......
*about an hour after Jebby goes by a roadie appears and asks if this is the best spot to watch the race, d'oh!
*support vehicles asking me if this is the way to the next checkpoint, double d'oh!
*a walker asking me if this is the way to Ingleborough, treble d'oh, I did lose my rag with him, oh dear
ha ha.......
*oh also some competitors heading straight towards Ingleton before I shouted them back....if you can't navigate this bit, god help you if the clag's down on the real course!
My feedback for John might be that I think more road signs are needed near to this horrible junction, and maybe more than 2 marshalls for this (4 road) junction. Wearing your numbers on arms is a real necessity, it's the only way I had of recognising you lot v the mass of normal cyclists passing by and crossing the junction.
So hope you all enjoyed yourselves, but before going for the record of most appearances in this race, think, might you be able to marshall next time?
See you next year.
I was struggling with the helmet/bike combo shouldering the bike Ady... and could only see my feet :(
It just wasn't to be for me yesterday... I was going really well on the first road section, and the off road bit until you had to start walking up Simon's Fell... While hauling myself and bike up Simon's Fell I realised I had been too optimistic thinking I could sustain the rigours of a race like Three Peaks CX on injuries that were only 3 weeks old... My knee started stiffening up (bruising still hasn't gone completely) and got painful and my elbow started to protest profusely by bleeding again and throbbing while I hauled myself up on the fence with that arm... When I came off the top of Ingleborough after some off road riding and more carrying the bike and climbing, I realised I was completely drained... arms and legs like jelly... Therefore the descent of Ingleborough was strenuous to the umpteenth degree while normally that is quite a nice one... I was 2/3 minutes up on last year on the Ingleborogh CP I realised when home and still up on last year when I decided to step off, at the start of the off road section up Whernside... But after having struggled on the road and the legs and arms not easing up, with a throbbing elbow that didn't want my arm to hold onto the handlebars and a stiff and painfully swollen knee, I decided I should not put my healing body through another two hills... It would have gotten dangerous as well and the last thing I wanted to do is fall again and re-injure or worse!
I have the Fell relays on 16 October to think about as well... and I clearly need another week or so of healing time for that knee before I can push things again :(
Gutted and a hard decision... keep thinking what if, even though I know I did the right thing... ah well, there is always next year
Some good pics altogether there!
I've spotted a few riders I know too in the various pics, including my namesake, & friend, in his 'Bradford Olympic' colours (Rich must be quite out of shape at the moment, finishing down in 42nd!)
Plus, I was quite surprised to see a 'Wakefield Triathlon Club' rider finish in 10th!
What I gained on the climbs and descents I lost on the roads, the toughest sections for me was from Cold cotes to Brunstscar!!
Once on the fells I was happy and climbing ok but knackered from the road sections!
Maby some training on the road for next year!
My conclusion was that I need more time on the bike too. I was pretty consistent until I got a flat in Horton (amazing it took so long to go down as I know I got the puncture(s) on Whernside), gaining on the hills and losing out on the roads, and then struggled up PYG. A bit disappointing, but I know more about the race for next time.
