Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Reminds me - on Shelf Moor a couple of weeks ago watched three - could have been four kestrels hunting on the Doctor's Gate side. I thoght it was strange becaus you only ever see them singly or at most, in pairs. I wondered if they were juvenile trainees?

On the odd occassion that I've seen a crowd of Kestrels (I think that's the correct term), I've always assumed it was a parent teaching youngsters.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I think I saw a Weasel!! Smallish, no black tip to what seemed a relatively short tail, compared to a Stoat!? Lighter brown possibly too.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
You don't seem stoatally sure, they are weasily confused (etc.)...

Think I've got the hang of Weasels / Stoats now! Saw another Weasel run across the road! Also had a walk with a vole yesterday. I followed it as it ran down the fence. Then when I passed it in order to stop it stressing it followed me. Then it sat in a corner and looked at me before wandering off down the fence while I watched it go!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I saw wheatears and skylarks near Settle and a stoat on my way home. The stoat was definitely a stoat and it hopped into the bank waving its black-tipped tail. Gorgeous slinky creature.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
bat nearly hit me in the face tonight as I jumped down the steps leaving the running club. Scared the life out of me, like a little silent spitfire banking right in front of my face.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
2 owls outside our house at 1am this morning...have described the screeches they made to someone and am told it's Tawny owls that are nesting nearby. I was so curious by their callings that I hung my head out of the window and actually saw one of them fly out of a tree opposite, amazing.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I've seen two dead near Masham and the other evening I was leaving Mickley and a little bandit faced polecat type creature was peeping out of the hedgerow at me. I think the two dead ones were polecat ferrets but am not sure about the live one, could've been a polecat, a ferret or a hybrid of the two, either way it was quite a cutie.

Quite a few carcasses of signal crayfish on the banks of the Wharfe near Barden today, seems like they've really taken a hold.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Another dead thing! Freshly killed, small bat in the road when I was out running. Must have been hit recently and in daylight as there was quite fresh looking blood! I put it in a bush thinking I might return and see if I can retrieve the skull but think its probably a waste of time as it will be tiny and a faff to seperate from the furry bits!

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
SEA EAGLE, well chuffed and not somewhere I'd have expected to see one.
1 Cheeky weasel, numerous buzzards, one pair on the ground no more than 10 meters away.
-
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Thousands and thousands of fox moth caterpillars up on the moor, sun and warmth bringing them out to feed. We reckoned there must have been one every square meter, and there's miles of moorland.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
At 0.45 last night I was cleaning my teeth and heard a right racket just outside my window. I went into the garden to investigate and a tawny owl was perched on the telegraph pole at the bottom of my garden calling to one that was in the woods some way away. He wasn't bothered by me at all so I got my camera out but it was hard to shine my headtorch on him and take a picture so I've just got a bit of a blurry back shot. He then took off flying low over my head so I felt the air from his wings, amazing!!

that is amazing, what an encounter! You'll be on edge expecting him back tonight :)

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I went to bed a bit earlier last night and he wasn't there but I'll be checking every night now! There's also some barn owls that live up near the common and I have seen them when I'm cycling in the winter so I'm hoping for some more owl watching soon.:D
