Two hour ride this morning a breeze, then some serious artwork.
Moved 6 ton of stone this afternoon can't draw at the mo must have stressed the core...
Too much faffing this morning meant the planned two hours on the bike became 1hr 15 minutes... ah well, did plenty of climbing in the sunshine and the last 5 miles on the flat at 36 km/hr, which felt good!:):):)
Faffing
What with your gear
I find that I have to have all my kit hanging ready in one of those Tesco bag for lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. That way Im away quickly.
No ride for me yesterday but a great fell run.
Kit I have ready
Shoes
bib shorts
overshoes
armywarmers
gloves
i pod:eek:
helmet
sunglasses
If they are there then im quickly away.
Hann are you logging your mileage for the year ???????.
not been on the bike for a while.
Cycled 37m to brum from Leicester in am and same as return journey pm yesterday. Felt reasonably strong and ride went well especially the return despite the pronounced back wheel wobble and no brakes. Can feel it in my legs and bottom today though.
Right, how do you go flat out round a corner without flying off and dying?
Is it all just about balance and getting that inside knee out?
When im on my fancy road bike i really sh!t it when i come to fast turns.:o
Make sure you have quality, correctly inflated tyres and that the road appears to be grit/diesel free! Lean into the bend and smoothly nudge your bars in the opposite direction of the lean (counter steering), this will angle you into the bend. You must ensure you have a good approach line into the bend, come into it from the white line and be smooth - forget about sticking your knee out, although you can move your arse slightly off the saddle if required.
Not Faffing with my gear, no... I had to pay in some money into the bank and it was a HUGE faff...
And yes, I am logging my training, I always do... and my coach wnats to know what I do too...
Two hours at a decent effort this morning, with a few climbs I rode 1-2 gears harder than I usually would, then found when I got to the fair that I could not get in, so after 20 minutes of getting cold waiting in the wind, I decided to get back on the bike for another hour
Legs hurting a little now...
Yep thats good Hann
You are doing well on the bike. Its good to push yourself. Not sure where the fair came into it. ?
Oh and Ive been meaning to ask you 3 questions
1, Do you hear voices on the bike ? , I do
2, I hope your wearing reflective or bright gear, I worry about all the forumites on bikes
3, Well three , this is one thats puzzled me for years
Are there actually any mice in Old Amsterdam ?
And no im not losing it ive just had two co codimol tablets for the first time ever. No pain in my legs now.
Spent an hour in the bike shop, handing over my trusty steed for the once over, good news I don't need a new chain/cassette, bad news it was hard hard work to walk out without upgrading to the ever so nice new components... :(:o it would look sooooooooooo much better - honest!
even more hard work when you know the flippin owner and he tries to get you to take a job in the shop  that would be fatal!
oh yeah, I'm sure it is. I'm seriously considering it and will have a proper chat next week when I go back to collect my bike. He's branching out a lot more and has extended the place - looks really good now but there's room for improvement of which I voiced my ideas!!! :D
What do you mean MORE bar tape?! Didn't Santa bring you any?
The Tri shoes don't make a massive amount of difference really. I take it unless you have practised like a demon you won't be having them already clipped into the pedal? I have a pair of tri shoes but to be honest they are as quick to put on as my normal road bike shoes...... 1 tip though the elestic trainer laces are brilliant for the run bit, they really DO save time, beats faffing tying laces up! Don't forget talc in your bike shoes too, go mad with the stuff when you get out the pool then your feet will go in the shoes better! What distance are you doing...are you running sockless??
Yo Emms, ta for info, the pool is Derwentwater:D about 800mtrs,
then 38k bike and 10k run.
I've been out twice on me bike:o and been swimming twice a week since Nov. I was thinking of having the shoes ready clipped and ready to go, but.....
Yup, probably sockless,10k ish fell type run.
Concerned about the open water swim.
Need to get 8 weeks of cycling in.
Hope I can catch up on the run.
Any advice, help, tips much appreciated.
Cheers Ady.
Theres alot of loose chippings and stuff up round where i ride so its a disaster waiting to happen really....but there the odd lush corner i might have a crack at 'properly' going round.
Im planning dusting the summer bike off on monday - aslong as the weathers good.:o
1. No, I don't hear voices, I see arses ahead of me to catch LOL
2. No and I don't wear a helmet either, but my clubkit is quite bright...
3. of course, plenty of mice in Amsterdam :D
I love you Daz :D
P.S. I am working at an art fair in the Netherlands at the moment...
Ah an art fair, thats good.
Interested on your ideas about not wearing a helmet Hann. I used to not wear one but after what happened to a friend would never not wear one now.
Everyone has different views but im afraid I will always don a lid now. My specialized one is so light.
Me too.
Hann it's never not worth wearing one. No it's not a legal requirement, in my opinon it should be.
Do you not wear one riding a horse either?
I've seen victims of a fall off a bike and a horse both with and without helmets and as a consequence would NEVER not wear one in either sport (especially on the 'orse - he was BONKERS!!!)
Stay safe
xx
I wear one racing and on the track, as it is compulsory...
I have my reasons: I was once out with a group of riders (horses), I was bringing up the rear for the riding school... the lady in front of me, a competent rider, was made to wear a helmet by the riding school... She wasnt happy with it, but did as asked... we rode through a dip in the land, she went with the jolting movement the horse made quite perfectly but in the process her head came back and her helmet broke her neck... She fell off her horse dead on the spot right in front of me, I even heard her spinal cord snap...
It is my life and my head so I do as I wish I am afraid...
On a different note, I have badgered the shop for 5 months and this is what I have been offered for my cycle to work bike.

My choice at the minute is the cannondale, Han, Ady, Daz and the rest of the serious mob how does it compare?
Choice number 2 looks a good bet Stagger. See you at Midgley Moor ;)
Sorry have to agree Stagger, the Cannondale was my least fave :o
For what it is worth check out my bike, back a few pages. I commuted to work on this for 20 years and it is still going strong. The reason I showed this was because of the mudguard clearance and saddlebag, yes I know it looks a bit old fashioned but the last thing you need is to have to carry a rucksac (I don't need to spell that out). I only did one winter on my racing bike (whilst the other was resprayed) and I would never do that again. Anyway if you need any more info let me know. The Trek has mudguard clearance and braze-ons and only cost around £550 so it doesn't matter that it gets hammered. Plus you need lots of lights.
I can give you heaps of tips Ken, I'd say for your first don't worry about the shoes already clipped in as invariably you'll lose time for faffing getting the pedal to spin back round and wobble like hell as you bend to fasten the strap regardless of the velcro! :D
Have you done an OW swim yet? it will be cold and dark but don't worry, I know tips for that too. I had a proper proper fear of Open Water and if I can swim 2 and a half miles in the sea then you can do it in a lake, mind you the South of France was a lot warmer!! :)
At least on leg 4 you can take my mind well and truly off Yewbarrow if you ask me all about the tri's then, I can waffle on for hours!
Thanks Guys and Girls.
The main reason I picked the Cannondale was the gearing. The triple means I get a 52 at the front and I have said it must have an 11-25 at the rear.
So on the long days in the saddle I still have a "get back to Stainland ring"
I have asked for it in the Liguigas colour (white, green and blue)
What are your reasons for the other choices (besides its not PINK Em)?
I use the Pro race 3 tyres Trevor. They seem okay. Not cheap but I have not had any punctures since the rim tape episode and that was my fault. Otherwise these tyres are very good.
The roads around here are rough. The trick is to keep them well pumped up. 120psi for me. Pump them up everytime you go out.
Like I say ensure your correctly measured up for the bike
I use Schwalbe Ultremo's Stagger and am very happy with them. Light, strong and very puncture resistant...
I would go for the Willier but that is mainly based on the fact that I looked at one before myself... of the full carbon variety however, they are good bikes and well specced up...
Ultremos for me too. Mich pro race are a good tyre also, these 2 are probably the best rubber you can put on. It makes a difference to the ride/handling, not worth keeping the 7.99 supplied hoop you will get as standard.
Good tyres are definitely worth the investment, as we noticed today. I was out with the local club here in Holland again this morning, in the pooring rain... and we sustained a collective 8 punctures, one guys had 3... and he had cheapo tyres on...
Needless to say my lovely Schwalbe's performed brilliantly, not only on the puncture protection, but also on the rather ropey and wet road surfaces... Great grip, even in the wet :)
80 brisk and hilly miles this morning with 2 other riders. Got quite tasty on the way home back through the trough, Whitewell, Bashall & Whalley. 1 lad got dropped with 20 miles to go and I was left clinging to the wheel of an ex 1st CAT rider so got a good workout/working over!
