Two long tailed tits and a male blackcap on Stef's folks' garden feeders this morning
Saw a beautiful owl last night on a late run. Its always nice to see one and not just hear it!
Not todays but last Thursday night. One Fox and a decent sized Owl of some description, very close when I spotted it but it swooped off sharpish before I got a good look.
Seeing quite a few woodcock now, which is nice. Last week in Cheshire 3 got up from an area of about 6ft. Another one in the woods above home today. Snipe on the higher ground and marshy bits.
At least 4 hares in full white winter colouring. They looked a bit out of plce as most of the snow on Outer Edge has melted!
Nearly trod on two of them, as they were hiding under heather and in dips in the ground, but no hares were harmed...
Stopped for a "call of nature" on my way up Simons Seat this morning. Just about to set back off & spotted a very cute mole snuggled up to the wall. Managed a moment or 2 of closer inspection before he scurried inbetween said wall. Would have like to have taken him home to show the children.
2 deer grazing Watergate park Newcastle very nice just went through the woods nearly ran straight into them
A male merganser and a kingfisher on Lancaster canal. The kingfisher is just so stunning! :-)
Flock of long tailed tits by the river on this afternoon's run out
Not running but I was doing a rope training session on Thursday and we had a Great spotted woodpecker bashing its head 10ft above for nearly an hour
I always thought a mole above ground was a dead mole or a mole in trouble. The only ones I have seen above ground have been of the Norwegian Blue variety. Haven't seen any below ground. Yet.
Bleaklow. Where men are men and hares are... scared.
From the upstairs window of the Giggleswick house where I'm working, watched a magpie setting about a weasel, chased it across the flags, pecking away, then up and down the boundary wall as the weasel tried to find a gap to scarper into. It seemed to be attacking the weasel for nothing more than it's own amusement. I've seen them do it with chicks and other small birds, but this was a new one on me.
Sadly I came across a dead Badger on Fanshaw Gate Lane right outside the Hall; Badger -v- car not a good outcome, such a waste of a beautiful animal.
First redpoll of this winter on the birdfeeder a couple of minutes ago. Still looking out for the first reed bunting in the garden - they usually start coming to the bird table about now.
Dead barn owl. Near Gradbach youth hostel near the Roaches.
Poor thing. Bizarrely, it was just next to an empty bottle of rum left in a dry-stone wall, presumably by some youths staying at the hostel. It looked like the owl had drunk itself to death.
A peacock butterfly up on the moors, sunning itself on a south facing bank. I wished it a Happy Cristmas and suggested it go to bed for the winter.
I like this thread. I always read it.
I was lucky enough to watch squirrels feeding up in the Cairngorms this weekend, and saw my first crested tits. A few photos of the squirrels on my blog - photo quality quite poor as they were taken on my phone.

Two red kites hovering and doing that clever thing they do with their tails just above the petrol station on the A61 going into Harrogate. I know they are quite common now but I almost missed the traffic light changing due to marvelling at them.
Came across a herd of Llamas earlier today, as you do...
Saw a Kingfisher down at Tems Beck in Giggleswick today, flitted off as I got close. Lovely thing to see on such a godawful day.
A big fox just trotted past the end of my front garden. Maybe its all this discarded Turkey in the Wheelie bins that's attracting it?
Small Fox, very dead not trotting
Squirrel, red, still scampering
Seals, very smelly and quite noisy
Dipper (first for a while)
Muntjac Deer in Surrey. Late evening, then very very early morning! Not seen them before. Also a few Red Kite on route home. This was a couple of weeks ago. Oh! Red Deer (not unusually!) up by Thurso.
Blackbird heard singing this morning early-doors  January 4 might be early to start thinking about spring but we spotted some rooks having a tidy up of their rookery t'other day too
