Can someone explain cat A, B etc to me?
BTW, sweet wheels Ady.
I DON'T have a cat!!!
The cat seems to have me though...:( and soon there will be so many, I will have to call them A, B, C etc etc...
But it ain't giving birth on my bed... even though I can tell that is what it is really after, with all that smooching!!!

Your question is quite straightforward
Cat 4 = New riders
Cat 3 = You need to gain 10 or more points whilst holding a Cat4 to get a Cat3
Cat 2= Lot harder, you need to gain 40 points whilst holding a Cat 3 to get a Cat 2
Cat 1 = err unreal pace = You need to gain I think 200 points whilst holding a Cat 2 licence
Elite= Dont worry you would already have found out your that good
Also you have to retain a certain amount of points each season after gaining each licence.
Also Fellrunner
I should of mentioned speeds
Cat 4 say 19mph
Cat 3 bit more
Cat 2 23mph
Cat 1 25mph
Elite = Milan San Remo 2009= Mark Cav= 6hrs 42 sommert, thats 44kilo an hour= just over 27mph
There has been thousands of Cat 1 riders over the years that just cannot make the jump.
Its the distance
What we could do is all do a 40mile ride say undulating and give our times roughly , add them all together and see what our forum peloton would be.
You could all PM me them if you dont want the times to be known
Mine would be 20mph on a not to steep a course with say not much wind.
Id be very surprised if we was more than a Cat 3 peloton.
If you have a garmin try and cycle at 25mph and see how far you get. God its serious after a few miles and it certainly doesnt become fun anymore does it.
You can get relegated from all cats except cat.3. Once you have been promoted out of 4 you stay out.
I'm doing my first road race a week on sunday. Nice 34mile race on a closed circuit course in Solihull for cat.4 only. Looking forward to it.
I have to ad to this that, once you have gained Cat 3 status, you can't be demoted back to cat 4, but in other cats you can be set back if you don't gain enough points...
My average training pace on undulating terrain tends to be around 20 mph... a little faster when on the flat, up to 25 mph, and a little slower when I need to do a lot of climbing, 17 mph... Spot the strength here: on the flat I am happy to ride between 22 and 25 mph... as soon as it rises, I am out of the back
In a large motivated and skilled group (such as the pro peloton) it's amazing how little you have to do as long as you're on the right wheels. I remember reading that on one the flat TDF sprinter stages a few years ago the average pace was 44kph but one of the mid-pack wheel suckers (probably a domestique on a day-off) only averaged 150 watts of power output.... my gran could manage that! That said, it takes an immense amount of skill to sit in a pack like that and it all changes once the road kicks up.
Quality idea that Daz.
Im planning on riding again on monday (if the weathers good!)....my legs will still be a little trashed from racing on saturday and im not quite up to 40 miles either but i'll give it my best shot......i might avoid rivington as well because that hill is a b&&tard!!!
well i will be making my second attempt at the Milnthorpe 10 tonight to try and beat 30 mins which is only 20 mph
Thanks for the feedback on cat A, B etc. That's cleared it up for me ;) .
I think.
Quite... when I first expereinced this in my first proper road race I was completely bowled over... I was sat towards the front/middle of the bunch and was drafted along quite happily, while taking a break, at over 50 km/hr  Never knew I could go so fast on the flat... and it felt so effortless... But as Nik says, you need to sit on the right wheel and in the right place in the bunch for this to work... and don't take your hands off the brakes... as the pace surges rather a lot...
LVRC age groupings. Some fast VETS out there, much cheaper than BCF events.
Forgot to mention that yes you can be demoted from Cats
So many things affect speed on the bike though. I did mean solo and we could just have a rough guess at were we are.
Nikalas your right
In Milan San Remo , Cavendish was certainly carried too and over the Poggio.
He now is so famous that he commands a whole team under him. BUT he has had to get there. The hardest thing is keeping winning. So much at stake.
In the old days this was a forgone conclusion
A rider like Rik Van Looy could afford to buy the peloton. No one dare go against him , if they did their career would be ruined. Armstrong used this ploy to good effect as well. And if someone comes along then why not jus buy there services.
It only changes when another exceptional rider comes along.
In Van Looys case it was Mercyx. Armstrong it is Contador and I personally feel thats why he has come back. He cannot resist taking on the spaniard.
So the very best Riders
Anquetil, Coppi, Armstrong, Maertens, Bobet, Hinault all at some time controlled the bunch in more ways than one.
Thats what fascinates me about this great sport. So many variables.
You just dont get that so much nowadays
Look at Boonen at Roubaix, no one would work for him, So would that be
1, They all realised Cancellara was too good
2, They let him go to teach Boonen a lesson
3, Boonen didnt offer enough to chase
4, Cancellara attacked when Boonen was feeding
5, Cancellara offered more to them not to chase
6, Cancellara defeated Boonen last weekend in his head
You could go on forever. :D:D
Oh and dont forget Hannek'es home race is Sunday. Amstel gold race
climbs of 23per cent over the 155miles. Lots of street furniture, parked cars, skips, windmills, corners, islands and everything else to get in the riders ways.
Oh and lovely Dutch ladies cheering on the riders.:D
Daz, how about rather than 40 miles...i do a 30 instead.
Id be very very slow doing a 40 unless i rode out towards the coast for the flat lands.:o
28.53 for Milnthorpe 10 last night so an improvement of 1.07 over last week
at this rate i will be getting a PB in 8 weeks
well yesterday evening's bike ride.... 2 hours on the single-speed mtb around and over Chinley Churn... cracking fun, excellent trail conditions and great to get out on the bike after a winter of almost 100% running.
After last nights TT efforts, this mornings attempt at pushing that lactate treshold up was pretty damn hard! But happy with the ride, as I can see where I am going :)
hello cyclists! - I appear to have accidently entered a charity sportive from sheffield of 100miles!
so far I have done some rides round the peak up to 4 hours (45miles, 5000) as a peak - averaging 30-35 miles long ride once a week (3000feet approx, 12-14mph).
i also ride 35minutes commute 4/5 work days.
i was guessing build up to 60-70miles long ride??
throw in a longer evening ride (or 2) now its lighter??
any tips on fitting cycling and running together?
i have been doing long ride saturday, then long steady run sunday.
thanks.
That sounds about right Ratfink, just build up that saturday long ride a bit :)
It is amazing what you can get away with, when it comes to increase in distance, on the bike with little training... I rode a 5 day cycling challenge last year off a longest ride of 60 miles in training, then decided to do a 100 mile ride to see how I would get on, and it was fine!
Ratfink
You need to be thinking about food intake. Eating on the move is one of the most important things to learn when riding.
Fill one of your bidons with coca cola
Take it easy , the hundred will come eventually,if your talking about 7/8 hours on the bike it may be worth thinking about a better padded gel saddle. Can make all the difference.
Remember your going to be shedding a lot of calories, thats a lot.
thanks guys
i am used to eating on longer runs, but you do seem to run out more suddenly biking than running (as in oh my god i need to eat NOW)
think i need to perfect my "getting stuff out of my pocket without crashing" technique.
also "unwrapping stuff without crashing"
have successfully managed drinking without crashing (but i am rubbish at no hands)
Getting a bar out of your back pocket is like taking a womens bra off when your 17:eek::)
Seriously though
Ratfink, If your struggling , tape 2 x shot blocks or bars to your stem with electrical tape
ah good knowledge on taping the stuff on the frame/stem/bars!!
hopefully by june (notwithstanding volcano induced 2nd winter) i will be out of the thick winter gloves, and so slightly more nimble fingered with the management of wrappers and the like.
