I was grateful of being ferried everywhere, my dad was in the CID as my grandfather and yes whilst I agree with Aspidstra in the sense that crime was not reported in the way it is now it was something that I was more than aware of as I grew up.

Some of the things my dad told me would chill you to the core but it made me realise that I needed to stay safe, he didn't tell me horror stories in a mean dad sort of way - he just answered any questions I posed as honestly as he could I guess.

As I grew up in the days pre mobiles it was drummed in to us that we had to tell our parents where we were and no you don't really appreciate the worry they went through until you go through it yourself.

Children do need to grow up and throughout their lives we as parents constantly have to sever strings but it will NEVER stop you worrying or doing all in your power to prevent anything happening to them and if that means waiting up until midnight to go and pick up etc then so be it.

I am finding this really interesting :) I can't imagine being in a parents position on this, but I think I would want to always know where my kids were always, and would not want my kids walking about on their own at night, like you have said daz and many others....
BUT I also remember it from the kids point of view and it wasn't like that for me, and I am glad really. I used to hang out with my mates round the streets and stuff at 14-15 (not getting up to mischief, there was just little else to do, it was how we socialised, and I never felt unsafe, and was never on my own) and by the time I was 16 was going out up town drinking (nottingham city centre) every weekend and thought nothing of walking through town on my own to get the bus home or whatever.

I like to think I am fairly streetwise because I have not been over protected but I also think i was bloody stupid sometimes, and perhaps if my dad really had known where I was all the time, things would've been different (I always told him where I was going to be, I was just not necessarily 100% honest about it til I was about 17 - 18 and had nothing to hide anymore!:o )

I think where you live affects your kids ie town, village or a city. Lots of peer pressure from older kids and gangs who hang out together. My lad has done the lot from visting old people in there homes to being kicked in the head by a gang of lads. Spent my night sat at the hospital bed with him. Not very nice. You can look after your kids 24/7 but never know whats round the next corner.

You dont need money to bring up kids, I know for that for a fact. Im still a kid, got tight a*sed parents and apart from being a fell runner Im perfectly well adjusted! Mind you, I will admit to needing bussed everywhere....
