That's our Andy, full of sense:rolleyes:
Let me know when you go, no promises but if I'm free happy to give you the tour.
If you head for Crowden you do do Blackhill in morning and back to car eat lots and then do Bleaklow in PM.

Yes, since it is twenty years since you have done Tankys.....those rectangular slabs of "eye sore" that lead upto Blackhill are exactly that, an eye sore but they have done a grand job in reducing erosion and do aid the fell runner in forward momentum....I'm sure twenty years ago this section of Tankys would of been a knee deep quagmire and alot tougher unless frozen.....
Tip: one of those rectangular slabs not too far from Blackhill Trig has three bits of rusting iron sticking out of it, hit that and head south....;)
Years ago we never went near the summit of Black Hill, over the road at Wessenden Head, immediately right and parrallel the road for 4 / 500 yards and contour round to Dean Head and carry on to hit the Pennine Way half way down from Soldiers Lump to Red Ratcher, under Laddow Rocks to the check point at the stile above the outdoor centre at Crowden.
No paving slabs anywhere.
Thanks for this chaps.
I have a vague recollection of going up the road & to the right of Black Hill then going over Westend Moss, back in the day. I will get out & recce after the OMM.
Putting my entry in the post tomorrow:confused:

Any advance on 122 entries this year?
I did hear talk that there might be a few minor route "modifications" this year. Will we get a "heads up" beforehand anyone? ;)
Andy has been in negotaitions with Moors for the Future and United Utilities about the route, Perhaps more for next year than this but they have asked for some consideration about route choice. Andy has run their prefered route and Brent and I went up to day, I would doubt that the route will change but can't confirm it yet.
Don't worry you will find soon enough.;)
Entries are still on the increase.
No FRA Relays for IDPK? Penistone folk had a good romp!
Race limit this year is 200 entries, however, with natural wasteage, may mean 180 (ish) runners if we get full entry list.
Any route mods that may happen, probably none for this year as Ian DP intimated, will be described on here as soon as we know.
Hopefully meeting with United Utilities this week sometime to discuss.
I was out Saturday afternoon reccing the section from Wessenden Head to Crowden, didnt get that far as I was a bit pushed for time. Took the Tooleyshaw Moss path from Blackhill trig down to the col where there is a stile in the fence, then dropped down into Crowden Great Brook. Is this the right way to go as I couldn't see any paths down to the brook & it was very rough going.
Hiya Bornagain,
I met you on Saturday afternoon at Black Hill trig. Been out and recced this route this morning with Ratfink and her pals. Bumped into IanDarkpeak and his mate too.
Leave the trig and follow the PW until you get to a flooded area where the stone path goes over, just before you go over this 'bridge' there is a path to the left, follow this as best you can over the peat until you come to a fence, climb over the stile that also has a dog gate and follow the path all the way down to Crowden Little Brook (passing a white post and sheepfold), then you have about 2 miles along in to Crowden.
Hope this helps.
Linda
Just had a reply from Unitied Utilities.
We were being asked to continue for another 1.3K beyond Soldiers Lump before turning off for Sliddens.
I ran this last Friday and it was horrendous.
The best route for all concerned, UU and runners, is to got beyond the "flooded area" where you will see a mound of peat covered in small stones on the north side of the paving slabs. Turn left south st this point and pick up a small trod for 50 metres where another small trod crosses it. Turn right on this second trod which will bring you to the rickety stile at the top of Crowden Little Brook and nearly the start of the path down Sliddens.
The ultimate aim is to avoid damage to ANY newly seeded parts of the peat, namely before the flooded area.
This flooded area is just after a paving slab with 2 iron cleats in it, approx. 80 metres past Soldiers Lump trig.
If in doubt go on Pennine Way until long established grass is on the left (south) side of slabs.
This is imperative if we are not to jeopardise the future of the Trog.
Hi Andy
The "old/usual" route before the flooded area was 50 double paces from the Soldiers Lump Cairn for me so should be similar for you.
By Plumbums description go beyond the "flooded area" where you will see a mound of peat covered in small stones on the north(right) side of the paving slabs. On race day we will put a marker here so it will be more obvious. I might go up this week and make a more obviuos cairn/Marker for recciers.
This is only a short deviation and soon brings you back on to the usual trod.
Ian
Difficult to show exactly where on a map but its well before you dop off the plateau.
Main object of the "diversion" is to avoid the obvious new gars on the south side of the paving slabs.
The new grassed area goes up to IanDP's "flooded area" whaich is a pond, about 10 / 15 metres long, either side of the slabs.
Just after these "ponds" the path rises slightly, after this rise there is a small mound of peat, on the north side, covered in small stones. Look south at this point and you will see the grass right up to the slabs, is well established stuff with a trod running away from you, follow this for 50metres and bear right on another trod.
OK, I'll go up and have a look. I'm sure it will make make more sense then.
no no no no no no NO
all this 'guided' recce-ing is in my opinion the ruination (in general) of route choice and dare i say spirit of the race
obviously we have to adhere to landowners wishes in order to protect the race for future years.....BUT at this rate we wont need to carry a map and compass on race day
Totally agree ...it's a race and therefore competitive! that may be competing against oneself or others..and the environment and weather!
I'm totally agin way markers for the course where it's not needed for safety purposes. The only ones we need to worry about are the CP's and road crossings and where there are out areas deemed out of bounds by landowners.
...and as for giving grid refs out etc....
The only marker, if indeed one is put out, will be so I don't get some negative back from United Utilities that, so far, have been very accommodating and supportive.
The least we can do is make sure, as far as reasonably practical, we do not spoil some of their hard work and if this takes one marker at the side of a paved path then so be it.
Lets face it, the race has not been the same since the Pennine Way has been paved.
Going round Dean Head on, what seemed like miles of, man eating turks heads
and then over Bleaklow without any waymarkers / paving slabs down Hern Clough and then finishing over the 3,4 or 5 minute crossing when all you had was a cross scratched on a rock above the second stream of Blackden to show where to strike off.
And I am sure those who ran it before I started to would have other stories.
Set of soft poufs we are nowadays.:D
...point well made PB! What ever would Brian make of all this ....as for those paving slabs...
