We only missed it by a few metres - didnt take long to get back up on track. Looking back did you follow us that low or did you stay a bit higher? GG is a top navigator to be fair - spot on:D

Thank you all for your positive comments, it makes all of the effort worth while - everyone at CFR that I have spoken to had a great day as well. I should also like to say a big thank you to all of the runners - the co-operation from everyone was fantastic which made our job much easier. I was starting to lose sleep over the potential for chaos at the changeover, but it seemed to go as smooth as I could have hoped for.
What a difference a day makes eh? For those that came up the day before we had the fells at their best, but the navigation would have been a bit easier. I've got a feeling that our team captains all got together and did a rain dance on Saturday night.:D
A few facts & figures. We had 154 teams due on the day, 149 started (so only 5 couldn't make it). 25 teams were in the 'mini-mass start', which was 15 more than I predicted based on previous years spread of times. Shows what a bit of mist can do:rolleyes:
We will be getting the results out as soon as we can, I think Martin from SportIdent has been working on them today but it was manic at the end trying to get the results ready for 4 O'Clock and, they need a lot of tidying up and tying together to get all of the splits sorted and the totals correct for the teams from the mini-mass start. Yes they will be on the CFR website as well as the SportIdent site. I'll try to post on here as soon as I know that they are on.
Did someone say that they'd videoed Tim coming down that descent off of Knock Murton? If so please get it on You Tube - that was something else! (missed the other top runners coming down but I guess Simon made light work of it as well).
Finally, looking at the print outs as they came in we saw some dedication from some runners on the nav leg - they missed out one checkpoint, realised when they got to the next one and backtracked all of the way to ensure that every CP was done in the correct order, must have added 20 - 30 minutes on their running time? I'm note sure if it was more than one team.
that was us, we specifically me as I was, what's now laughable called, the navigator - we missed 4 somehow. Did 1,2,3,5,4,5,6 and it added about 30 minutes.
The sad thing is, I knew if I didnt go we'd get disqualifed, only to find out that our leg 4 runner missed a dib so I suspect we'll be DQ'ed anyway.
It was my 1st nav leg. I can take a few bearings okay but I learnt so much from that yesterday. Some simple changes would have made such a difference to our times.
T'was a tough blooding in and I hope I get to do it again next year.
Hi,
I was in the Durham Fell Runners ladies team, and we're down in the results as 'Did not finish'. We thought we had finished - although our 4th leg did go off in the mass start. Anyone know if this is the reason for the DNF status? And if at some point they'll update the results to show this?
It was the first time our running club have entered a ladies team in the relays and we had a great day out. Really enjoyed the whole event, thanks to all involved in organising it.
Will the results be published just by total leg time, so that we can see who did the best on each leg?
Results there aren't the easiest to use, especially if you want to compare between teams, but it's great to see what you did.
Can't believe I climbed up to blake on leg 2 in 17min. Been taking 25 in training! Proper chuffed as that's same as the winners.
Mind borrowdale V40s did it in 13.38!
I can't believe someone nicked your stuff Daz. I have always plonked gear down at fell events. Might be a bit naive but I would never have thought any fell runner would nick another's gear. On the other hand I do believe that RichT would nick my cake, the thieving git.
You lot are quick off the mark! I've only just picked up my email from Martin saying that the results are up & can I have a quick check of them.
This is the final set of results that will be published, and all of the information is there but if you want specific figures or comparisons you may need to dump it into a spreadsheet to analyse. As has been said, first port of call should be the pdf as that gives the full picture by merging in the mini-mass start teams.
Swoop - now you know why you hung back from the mini-mass start - you don't need to piece together the two sets of splits!
Thanks to CFR it was a great day, really enjoyed Leg 2, even the humungous climb into the clag.
Did they announce next year's venue?
there was a path!?!!
I followed the stream gully (just below cp2) down into the wood and found no sign of a path so decided to keep following the stream - i'm still picking various pieces of foliage out of my gruffnuts now!
I enjoyed the leg and just wish i'd had the courage of my convictions between cp1 and 2 as i lost a couple of minutes fannying around when i had the right line all along (more luck than judgement i should add!)
Good day out so thanks to the organisers - M6 home was a nightmare though!
And well done to CVFR good to see the chaps medalling.
Apologies again Hanneke!!! Did a lot of leg 4 runners come thundering past on that same path?
We managed to sneak into top 15 teams, so well chuffed, especially with some of our better runners unavailable!
Also, given the disqualifications, does this mean I technically beat the world triathlon champion! Ha!
my 4th venture to the fra relays, and yesterday was atleast as good as the previous, thankyou to all involved in making the day happen. Shame about the low cloud, put a bit of a dampner on precedings! :p i'd sooner have the veiws than this 'true test in the clag' malarkey. The team i was running for ended up being a man short on the day, so i did leg 1 and 3. Leg 1 I thought was great, leg 3 was horrendous ha that heather bashing is tough going on empty legs, navigation was proper hard and we lost loads of time having to go back to dib checkpoint 5 when almost at 6, this was after making loads of places upto checkpoint 4, with the benefit of hindsight i cant believe we went wrong here as it was almost straight line running between 4 and 5 :/ most respect to those men and women at the front of the race who made it all look easy.
Once again, thankyou to all involved in making the day happen :-)
Even though we (Mercia) got disqualified on the day, we still got a t-shirt for quickest leg (3) - surely that's not right?
Surely its all or nothing?!!!
For what its worth, good testing races and well organised.
agree leg 1 was trail race like - but that's what made it hard for me - too much flat out running, no chance to get my breath back on the climbs - I was 94th, terrible.
Each leg should test different people depending on their strengths and abilities and from talking to my teamates they did.
We had 4 teams, though the ladies team was dqd for wearing the wrong lippy or some such, which is a shame given the effort they put in.
However if you miss a checkpoint you should be dqd.
and we even got a coaster with the right date on (take note Ian Hodgeson organisers).
Well done CFR.
Re: Daz's missing kit - I know how you feel, my mobile was dropped near the sign on at the 3px, no one handed it in and it when I cancelled it a few days later the phone company found that it had been used regularly since it was lost - the likelihood is that someone connected to the race had it, which knocks your faith a bit.
Isn't that in ref to the "A Quiz" thread? :p
I'd heard Scotland on the day, but I'm not sure if that was on hard evidence or just on the assumption that it must be Scotland next.
I would have thought you would have to be a few miles outside of Dundee to get the right terrain.
But it should be good - I've seen plenty of the Scottish Highlands recently but never run up a hill there.
Does anybody know if any kit was handed in? One of our Harrier Ladies had her brown North Face jacket 'misplaced'
Great event. After Marshalling the relays at Chipping 2 years ago it was good to be in a team and get out and run. Have to admit to watching the clag coming down throughout the day was starting to slightly worry about my inability to navigate but it's amazing how much you don't realise you know until you have to put it into practice! The bearings rubbed off my hand in the rain though and I am still pulling bits of forest out of my leg!
I was on leg 4 and in the mini mass start and thought it was a great route, the steep bit up in the forest was a bit of a shock  enjoyable all the same. Had the thick clag and no-one to follow so the grey cells were put to the test and the checkpoints located - I had to pinch myself
Thanks to all at CFR for a stirling job and after being on the other side know just how long a day and stressful it can be. Well done all.

Hi Tom
As Welshharrier says about Tim flying down the last descent needing a parachute, that was really something special to watch, worth the entrance fee alone.
.
I think I caught it on video. Will get it edited over the next few day and will post a link to youtube on this thread ASAP.
Good day out. Thanks CFR.
It will be quite a short video! Tim's time from last checkpoint to finish was 1 min 17 sec compared with Ben B in 1:38 and Rob H in 1:35. Matt Speake nearest at 1:19.
I was fairly happy with our overall time but now I've seen the splits I can see how much time we lost on CP3 to 4. Probably around 8 minutes!!! Sorry team:o. I think I need a bigger compass that shouts at me.
Did anyone go direct, down and up to CP4 or did everyone follow the Blake Fell ridge with varying amounts of contouring on the east slope?
Ok, here's a slightly controversial entry. I don't want anyone to take this to heart as we had a great day out and enjoyed the challenging nav conditions - but as a runner on leg 3 who made a complete bollock of it, how did the rest of you plan dib 3 to 4?
We contoured round to the left, knowing that there wasn't going to be much of a clue as to where the right turn was to the final edge to the cairn with next to no visibility. We ran past a suspiciously looking christmas tree growing to the left of the path. I looked and though heyup, that looks out of place... but ran on regardless. Lost a lot of time there!
Anyone else notice that tree... was it growing? It looked like a healthy tree, but if I didn't have a life I'd run back there now to see if it is.
Mind you, as nobody knew the route nobody could have put a marker in anyway - so ignore me. If it were a plant(sorry), then I do have some admiration.
Regardless, we all had a great day out, and thanks to everyone for the slick organisation, and the bean stew. Looking forward to next year.
Don't worry, it was there. I saw it too. I think there was another somewhere along that ridge. I think they were healthy growing trees but didn't stop to check!.
I was more surprised when I found the Xmas trees growing at the high point of the central Kinder Plateau when up there on Boxing Day. Can't imagine that they arrived there by accident. Probably Luv Shack tomfoollery.
Hmmm, so some more 'parachute' descending then?

Im up for that Mr hooker
Incidentally I was given a thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurah kit check but was still surprised that someone in the changing area asked me how to use a compass and what requirements were needed on the day.
It amazes me that some people come along to the relays and just assume that if they have the neccesary equipment they will be okay.
The conditions in places late on in Leg 4 would have tested people who are not used to bad weather.
I have not the answer but surely by not being competent they are endangering themselves. I think there should be a certain criteria when you enter a team.
I know anyone can get lost in bad weather(langdale) but its how you get yourself out of the situation that matters
any thoughts on team criteria and safety
Daz, that is surely down to team/club captains choosing fast runners rather than competent fellsmen
