I have done the Fellsman two weeks before the 100 before and I didn't notice any effects on the 100, but I'm doing a lot more this year. I'm doing Marlborough Downs Challenge the week after the Fellsman.
Hi Britnik, I've done the Fellsman 15 times and virtually tried every combination of transport there is. If you are on your own, then there's not much alternative to leaving the car at the finish and getting the bus to Ingleton, as I did last year.Quote:

You need 3 busses; Threshfield - Skipton, Skipton - Settle, Settle - Ingleton. The timings don't really fit in very well, so expect some longish waits.
Last year, an afternoon bus from Threshfield was missed from the timetable so had to wait 1hr30 there. The total journey was about 3hr30. But it's better having your car at the finish when you need it most.

Have you got your accommodation booked? The B&B I tried first, where I stayed in 2003, refused to allow 1 night's accommodation and told me that everyone else would have the same policy. The second one I tried couldn't have been more obliging - no problem at all.

Sorry DB, forgot to ask, since you are such a veteran of this event, which is your preferred route across Fleet Moss - straight across or around the right edge? Is it generally OK to take the direct route, whatever the conditions? I've only taken that route once, in 2003, and I have no idea how bad it can get at its worst.
Not sure if I'm doing it this year - I can't be having too much fun at my age, it's not good for you.
I've not usually had a problem with accommodation in Ingleton as they are normally geared up for the Fellsman. But I know the 2 night policy seems to be getting more popular.
Ah, the lovely Fleet Moss to Middle Tongue. I always take to southerly route following walls & fences on dry firm ground to meet the watershed about a mile before Middle Tongue. Not only does it avoid Fleet Moss, but also the Oughtershaw Tarn area which can be equally as bad.

Just done my form (as you do on a saturday night - rock & roll lifestyle eh!) and will commit to the post box tomorrow. Not so worried about the distance, more about the chance to reccy the route so I can just worry more about the times when I'll feel rubbish and less about going wrong!

Does any one remember the good ol' days when the race started at 12.00 noon. You got up at a sensible time, ran an equal race with the superfast as they actually got to run in the dark. It also meant you finished at day break and not in the middle of the night so a quick shower and breakfast and possible a quick 40 winks and you were on your way home.

Strictly speaking I have no holidays left until April but I may be able to work something out - work extra to make up time.
The weekend of 21 - 22 March may be a possibility, followed by sometime over Easter then the weekend before the Fellsman (1 - 2 May).
21st is out for me but the Sunday isn't so bad.

I'm specifically looking at Cray-Threshfield. Another Pennine runner is also good for those dates.

Do we start at Cray or do a bit more...say, Fleet Moss too? or make a real day of it and start at Redshaw. Maybe we should move this to the recce section as a new thread....

I'd be interested in starting from Fleet Moss as well to practice the route round the southern edge and from Middle Tongue to Stake Moss. That already comes out at over 23 miles to Threshfield or 21 to Capplestone Gate, which for a recce over that terrain could take 7 hours or more. Adding car shuttling time makes for a long day.
How fit/fast are you guys? I'm hoping to get a recce in for 14/15 March but would benefit from a second visit and could make 4/5 April. It's the weekend after the Edale Skyline though so I might be a bit slow.:oQuote:

I'm doing this in 2009. Entries truly have gone mad. Website says limited space on floor at Threshfield and they reckon the 450 limit will be reached. There will also be a kit check on the Friday evening to make Saturday at Ingleton easier. Love to recce Fleet Moss to Cray, but can't get north before the event:mad:. Have fun!
A couple of us did a slightly spur of the moment recce of Fleet Moss to Buckden Pike yesterday.
We'd managed to borrow a mate's map which had quite detailed bearings, and as the clagg came down we were very grateful for it. Spent alot of time with our heads down, walking on bearings.
I reckon it would be possible without a recce etc, but you would end up put extra miles on as you would have to rely on obvious handrail features rather than taking more direct lines.
Do you have a copy of the bearings?
i'm at work at present but I'll PM you the important ones, I'll have to write a bit of text to explain them. Bear with me.

There's nothing local so I went for the area I know well and did all my early hill-walking. The kit is unusual as well! You must have read my accounts of the Isle of Wight Fell series and Box Hill in the club magazine.
If I could I would do more, but two young nippers mean other responsibilities. But I am coming up for the Fellsman although I'll be walking it with some jogging downhill.

I'd be travelling up for the weekend so if anyone is up for a reccee of an extra section on the Sunday that would be good.:eek:
I'm also planning a trip up on 14th March - I don't really want to do the same bit twice - have you decided which section you're doing?
Finally, I have the Harvey Yorkshire Dales map but it looks like the south west section goes off the edge before Dent. I don't have any coordinates - can anyone help me sort out where the route goes please? Hard to reccee without this.:o

Hi Stef,
You will need the Harveys Dales South and Dales West maps to cover the whole route. If you are planning a recce of the section before Dent then its from Ingleton, Ingleborough Summit, Hill Inn(Chapel le Dale), Whernside Summit, Kingsdale(next to Yordas wood), Gregareth summit, Great Coum then to Dent.
