Saw a couple of herons on the canal bank out running this morning. Must be something worth catching other than shopping trollies and sofas!
From Saturday, Jurassic Coast in Dorset

edit: why is it next-to-impossible to make attachments come up at a sensible size? Grrr.
Saw 4 young deer playing around near Totley moor Friday night. Always a lovely experience :)
Red squirrel and juvenile green woodpecker
(seen in garden on Isle of Wight)
Pasta weevils!
Where's the sheep thread ;) Yesterday a farmer turned up at the top of Cader Idris on a motorbike, and herded the sheep from the high slopes down to Llyn y Gader by means of one dog and lots of shouting!
3 kingfishers on pond at moment, fantastic sight.unsure if its parent and juniors
He was probably taking them down to the farm to dip them prior to the pending sheep sales, as hereā¦

juvenile kingfisher on pond learning to fish, dives from a good height with quite a splash,he then sat about 6 inch from the pond and did diving 'reps' about 1 every 3 minutes, then went back to the high dives.brilliant to watch.
then we had the return of a little grebe, the last one vanished along with the moorhens and coote when a mink appeared over a year ago.
to top of the day i was cycling up hollings hill(between shipley and the old harry ramsdens chip shop)there sat on a wall was a buzzard, minding its own business watching the world go by.
A young deer by the side of a track, a few miles from Hodder after yesterday's race. And then a partridge again sitting by the side of the track. Both fled as soon as I reached for my camera.
I trod on a squirrel while running. It was on the canal bank and although I kept thinking "any moment it will see me and run into the undergrowth" it didn't. But then when it did see me it ran ahead of me on the track. I had already decided to jump it, and my foot came down square on it. Luckily, as I looked over my shoulder it was running off the other way.
I don't think I'll ever stand on another live squirrel as long as I live. I wouldn't recommend it.
cycling to work,slight fog,had to double take,a camel and 2 zebra's
then saw the sign for circus
phew, though overdosed on my morning alpine.:D
I came very close to stepping on a rabbit yesterday, it was sat so still on the edge of a country lane that I only saw it at the last moment. Glancing back, it kind of quivered, so I think it was alive.
And later I saw a well-sized rabbit, the result of windfall apples in the garden, hopping around after a magpie.
Snipe. Fabulous sight early doors. Half the bird is beak!
Peak Thurs
swooping Peregrine shot passed us on a nav course
Scotland Sat
Red deer beyond count, the hills were echoing with Stag bellowing at each other. they could be heard for miles. 6 ptarmigan and some birds of prey, too far off to get a clear ID
saw a dipper on the river aire near to shipley for the first time, the river must really be getting clean
Great news!
A huge fox today, front half red and the rear half more a greyish-brown.
Hummingbird hawk moth in the garden today. I've not seen one before. It spent a few minutes on the Erysimums before harvesting the trailing lobelia. Lovely.
Here's some footage of one flying. Not from me of course.

What is it with wasps at this time of year? I was cycling home from work yesterday when one landed on my arm and immediately stung me.
I was marshalling the juniors recently at Lantern Pike, an U8 girl came past me and said "I've just been stung by a wasp - and it really hurt" - it was still stuck to her arm and it took me 3 attempts to brush it off. A minute later an adult came along with his child, and he'd just been stung as well!
To change the subject, we were sat having tea on Tuesday when a Sparrowhawk landed on the table on the patio. It was clearly eyeing up the sparrows in the Pyracantha growing up the wall. It flew across, into the shrub and started making its way through the branches. Its wings were getting tangled and I thought it had no chance of catching a small, agile bird. Sure enough, out it hopped a few seconds later with a House Sparrow clutched in its talons. Fascinating stuff!

These Golden Plover are back for the winter.
Came across an otter yesterday on the shore outside our house. It was tangled in fishing line that some idiot had tied to a rock. It was about ten metres off shore just looking at me. I did my best and cut the line. It swam off.
Nothing as sexy as an otter or sparrowhawk but a sheep. It was quite strange, the sheep was stood on top of Edale rocks just gazing out over the Edale valley below. It took me about 5 mins to run past it but it just stood there on it's own. I would like to think it was contemplating life and enjoying the view.
about 20 golden plover on my path this morning....get out of the way I'm on a speed session...:)
Good to see them though. I saw a huge raptor a couple of days ago, it looked bigger than a buzzard but it was side on and flew with trees behind it so difficult to pick out markings...possibly something passing through
Hartlaub's Turaco that flew across the path and sat in a holly tree next to us. Apparently, it escaped from a someone's house about 6 months ago and is happily living in Macclesfield Forest and Langley.
Splendid looking thing. I got a few photos, but here's one off of tinterweb: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...uraco_RWD2.jpg
3 peregrines today on kinder, first two in a clough above the Druids stone, I think we disturbed them, then about an hour later one shot passed us near Crookstone, probably one of the pair but on full attack mode

I was driving across the tops from Ayton to Settle the other evening and saw a little owl on one side of the road and a gorgeous barn owl perched on a fencepost on the other side. Pulled up next to it to have a look and it gave me a cross look, did a massive poo and then flew off. Charming!
