Lots of nice places to go nearby, starting with Chester's Cafe just down the hill - before Covid I used to go there a couple of times a week for post run nosh. Luckily my partner enjoys cooking so now the fruit scones and flapjacks I have are home made - with less sugar and fresh rather than dried fruit.
8.51 miles, 2,577 feet, 2 hours 48 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, including down the other side to Nanny Lane and back up again, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Overcast, with multiple banks of cloud at varying levels rather than a distinct cloud base. Continuous precipitation - anything from drizzle to moderate rain. Terrain saturated/streaming - puddles and rivulets everywhere. No significant wind, just a mild breeze from the east on the top. I saw about 30 walkers - including a large group of about 20; no other runners seen.
The large group was about two thirds youngsters, some of them about 10 years old, the rest were adults. I came across them several times, including on top of the Pike. Given the conditions they were coping really well - none were making a fuss. Well done them.
About 1 in 10 of the local blackberries are now ready to be picked.
9.49 miles, 3,281 feet, 3 hours 20 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 3 sides, including along the ridge to the true top, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Sunshine and fluffy clouds; most of the high tops were cloud free. No rain, no significant wind. Terrain very variable - anything from dry to saturated/streaming - slippery in places. Quite a few walkers on the fell - on my third visit to the top of the Pike there must have been 30 people there. No other runners seen.
9.55 miles, 3,344 feet, 3 hours 30 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 3 sides - an almost identical route to yesterday. Initially there was an inversion in some of the valleys, but this melted away very quickly leaving a lovely blue sky, with a few high fluffy clouds, and some streaky clouds in the east. No rain; a gentle breeze from the north west. Terrain very variable, not as wet as yesterday, slippery in places. Very few walkers about, but I was out very early; no other runners seen.
9.73 miles, 3,052 feet, 3 hours 20 minutes: Loughrigg trails, including Fishgarths Wood, Todd Crag, Lily Tarn, down the race route to the road at High Close, and up the steps opposite Grasmere. Overcast, with some patches of blue sky, the cloud base was at about 2,000 feet. No rain, a moderate breeze from the east. Terrain dry/damp with mainly good grip. Quite a few walkers on the fell; 2 other runners seen.
12.64 miles, 3,266 feet, 3 hours 38 minutes: Fairfield Horseshoe clockwise from Ambleside. Overcast, with almost confluent clouds just catching some of the highest tops. A few minutes of sunshine; a few minutes of drizzle. There was a moderately strong wind from the south east. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Very few walkers on the fells; 3 other runners seen.
I took the 1st, 2nd and 4th trods to the left on the way up, the trod to the north on the Fairfield plateau, bypassed Dove Crag to the south west, kept on the non race side of the wall on the descent, and went down the rock step.
Two of the runners and I kept overtaking each other - what fun - it was interesting to see which trods away from the main route were particularly advantageous: the first and fourth trods on the ascent, the trod to the north on the plateau, and especially being on the non race side of the wall.
10.01 miles, 3,339 feet, 3 hours 3 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, including along the ridge to the true top, down to the top of Nanny lane and back up again, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Overcast, with the cloud base at about 2,000 feet, and misty below that. Some transient patches of sunshine on the landscape. A strong wind from the south east; intermittent drizzle/light rain. Terrain anything from dry to saturated; slippery in places. Not many walkers on the fell; 3 other runners seen.
An unpleasant incident with a dog - barking and growling and getting very close - it ignored its owners calls, and even when he put himself between me and the dog it just went around him.
10.79 feet, 3,429 feet, 3 hours 48 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 3 sides, including along the ridge to the true top, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Overcast, with the cloud base at about 1,600 feet. Intermittent drizzle. Occasional brief sunny episodes. That wind from the south east was less strong today. Terrain wet/saturated and slippery in places. Not many walkers about; 5 other runners seen.
9.1 miles, 2,596 feet, 3 hours 9 minutes: Loughrigg trails, including down the race route from the top to the road at High Close, and back up the steps overlooking Grasmere. Overcast, with the cloud base at about 1,000 feet, misty below that. Intermittent drizzle/light rain. No sunshine. A moderate breeze from the west. Terrain saturated/streaming and very slippery. Given the weather, there were quite a few walkers on the fell. No other runners seen.

12.6 miles, 3,571 feet, 3 hours 47 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Low Sweden Bridge - rock step - Low/High Pikes - Dove Crag - Scandale - Red Screes - south ridge - Roundhill Farm - Ambleside. Not many walkers high up, but lots lower down, town and car parks busy. 8 other runners seen.
I wore yet another new pair of X-Talon 260 V2s today - I had almost forgotten how comfortable they are.
My partner went to our local blackberry corner this morning - 1.5 kgs of blackberries in the freezer - excellent in scones and flapjacks.

Overcast, some patches of blue sky; the cloud base was mainly above the high tops. No rain, a moderate breeze from the west. Terrain dry/damp with good grip. Lots of walkers on the fell, many of them young children - good to see. 6 other runners seen, 4 of them about my age - again, good to see.
10.34 miles, 3,340 feet, 3 hours 35 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, including up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. Lots of walkers on the fells - Striding Edge was heaving; 8 other runners seen.
Mike, who has the age record for a standard 24h round? I think you put in enough climb to satisfy the 10000'/week, it's just a case of whether you could keep going for that long.
11.21 miles, 3,178 feet, 3 hours 38 minutes: Loughrigg - Silver How race route with variations. Initially there were large banks of cloud/mist at multiple levels, later extensive areas of blue sky took over. No rain. A gentle breeze from the south. Terrain dry with good grip. I started at Rothay Bridge, and went up via Clappersgate/Fishgarths Wood/Todd Crag/Lily Tarn, and after High Close I went to the south of the race route out and back to avoid the bracken; for the second visit to Loughrigg top I went up via the steps overlooking Loughrigg Tarn.

About a quarter of the way into my run I thought the vegetation was being a bit more prickly than normal around my ankles - then I realised I had forgotten to put on my Dexshell socks, and just had short Injinjis on. And this was AFTER I had taken one shoe off to remove a tiny bit of grit. Problem solved by pulling my 2XUs down a bit.
The zig-zags between Bracken Hause and Green Burn are almost entirely bracken free - very unusual for this time of year.
7.38 miles, 2,471 feet, 3 hours 17 minutes: NDG - Stickle Tarn - North Rake - Thunacar Knott - High Raise - Sergeant Man - Blea Rigg - Stickle Tarn - NDG. Very sunny and warm, a few high clouds, hazy in the distance, no rain, a moderate and very pleasant breeze from the south. Terrain dry with good grip. Not many walkers about; no other runners seen.
I tried without Dexshell socks again today - my feet were a bit unhappy, maybe because it was the second day in a row. I am thinking of trying Smartwool socks over Injinjis tomorrow.
9.15 miles, 3,317 feet, 4 hours 14 minutes: ODG - The Band - Crinkle Crags - Red Tarn - right towards the 3 Shires Stone - left up between Long Scar and Black Crag - Pike o'Blisco - ODG. Mainly sunny, though there were some thin high clouds that attenuated the strength of the UV; no rain; a moderate breeze from the south east. Terrain dry with good grip. Not many walkers about; 4 other runners seen.
Some of the Loughrigg-Silver How race route is viable despite the bracken, some isn't, some I did not explore.
I've got three friends staying Ambleside for a few days at the moment.... one ran for Warks in the inter-counties fell, another is a regular fellrunner (not racer), and the other is a dedicated track/xc runner....
They were definitely out on the fells earlier today... If you spot a group of three women running in the area there's a chance they are my friends from Nuneaton.
10.04 miles, 2,741 feet, 3 hours 11 minutes: Wansfell Pike, including up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate, and along the ridge to the true top. 13.19 miles, 3,216 feet, 4 hours 10 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Fishgarths Wood - Todd Crag - Lily Tarn - Loughrigg - Silver How - Loughrigg Terrace - Under Loughrigg - Rothay Bridge. Initially weak sunshine and high fluffy and streaky clouds, no significant wind, terrain damp/dry with good grip. I was just about to go up the steps overlooking Grasmere when lightning and thunder started, so I went around on the Terrace and the Under Loughrigg Road. By the time I got to the caves there was torrential rain, and the electrical storm was quite close - only a couple of seconds between the frequent lightning and the subsequent thunder. Lots of walkers about, despite the weather; 5 other runners seen.
9.1 miles, 2,564 feet, 3 hours 2 minutes: Wansfell Pike from 2 sides, including along the ridge to the true top, down to the upper section of Hundreds Road and back up again, and up/down the race route from/to the kissing gate. A moderate breeze from the south. Not many walkers on the fell; 1 other runner seen.
Yesterday's rain has washed away a lot of soil in some places, leaving more exposed rocks than before.
11.05 miles, 3,049 feet, 3 hours 34 minutes: Loughrigg trails, including down the race route to the road at High Close, and back up the steps overlooking Grasmere. A lovely blue sky with scattered high fluffy clouds. A moderate and most pleasant breeze from the south east. No rain. Terrain mainly dry with good grip. Very few walkers about; no other runners seen.
The longest of the paths just to the west of the tourist track below the rock step is now viable despite the bracken.
11.63 miles, 3,478 feet, 3 hours 48 minutes: Rothay Bridge - Miller Bridge - Low Sweden Bridge - rock step - Low Pike - High Pike - Dove Crag - Scandale - Red Screes - south ridge - Golden Rule - Ambleside. Mainly overcast, some patches of blue sky, the cloud base was at about 2,500 feet. No rain. A moderate wind from the south. Terrain damp/wet/saturated and slippery in places. I saw 8 walkers on the fells, and no other runners.
Yesterday I ascended on the race side of the wall, today between the rock step and High Pike I went on the other side. I also went up to Dove Crag, and used the path from just below it to cross to Scandale rather than the path further down that goes via High Bakestones.
It felt very autumnal today.
