The way some moors are managed is a travesty for wildlife, especially as they are often subsidised to the tune of £50+/hectare. You are very lucky to be in the Northern Peak District, my only sighting of a mountain hare was during the Mickleden Straddle a couple of years ago.

I was discussing on FB earlier this week. I've seen more Deer, peregrines, Ring ouzels and Hares in the peak this year than any other year. Great to see.
I was doing a little 5 miler up Pendle Hill this morning and I passed a group of people crowded round something on the track alongside Lower Ogden reservoir. They had their phone cameras out and it turned out it was a Butterfly? (Red Admiral or Peacock I couldn't tell from where I was looking). When I returned the same way another group of people were gathered round it as well.
Probably a Red Admiral according to website ! http://www.britishbutterflies.co.uk/
Brambling on the feeder in the garden. First one I've seen round here.

Not the best of pictures but I needed to be quick but a Mountain Hare in winter white.

Thanks for the link wharfee, sad to see that such a beautiful beast is killed. I believe that, outside of Scotland, the groughs of the High Peak are the only habitat mountain hare have in the UK. Had anyone had the rare fortune to spot them elsewhere?
Nice one on getting a snap of a mountain hare in the snow Ian, I had to look hard to make it out in prevailing conditions!
About twenty deer today in a field off to the left of the road coming down towards Crag Hall in Wildboarclough. They were pretty big so I'd guess red deer, but none had obvious antlers.
Nearly trod on what I think was a vole in the half light last night, the little fella (or fellarette) didn't half cower, good job I spotted him (or her) :-)
lots around on kinder and Bleaklow at moment.
driving up the A1 to meet the spine saw about 10 kites and I'm pretty sure a sparrow hawk but could have been a kestrel but looked a little small for that with a longer tail.
we don't get Kites in the peak often so this was a delight.
Short-eared owl. I've not seen one for about 5 years. The last sighting was about 100 yards away from where I saw this one - over Taggsclough Hill just near the A54. A nice treat to reward my first run in a few weeks.
We were just watching Winterwatch on iPlayer last night and they had a short film about them. Apparently they're winter migrants.
a bit slow off the mark but a mountain hare taken with camera.

don't tell the climbing forums but the Downfall was "In nick" and climbable if a little thin at the bottom...

Nice pic. Photos I saw of the Downfall looked amazing ;)
Saw a Little Egret just outside Ingleton about a week ago, then Snow Buntings up on Ingleborough. Just before it steepens on Ingleton side. Not getting much on the feeders just now. Did think we'd get a bit more out here!
Red kite over lidl car park in Ammanford this week, common as muck in S. Wales!
Funny week. Saw a curlew flying over the deep snow on Thursday, probably just realising that his mates have upped sticks.
Made a real find today though, the first adult stag I've seen and I had my camera!

seen about 10 snow white mountain Hares this weekend..glorious
Saw a raptor yesterday, dark blue, smaller than a kestrel. Long thin and pointy wings over moorland near riddlesden - merlin maybe?
I always think of curlews as the first sign of spring. Not heard any yet but expecting to soon...
i saw a couple yesterday(curlews) near hawksworth(leeds)on the edge of ilkley moor, one was tucked against a wall near to a stone style, the other on a very underused path about a mile further on.
also saw a hare and a couple of deer.

A heron sat fish watching in Hope as I passed on the train this morning.
More remarkably yesterday, a heron in Nottingham (just a couple of miles from the centre) perched atop a roof. Grace & poise doesn't do it justice, a really remarkable bird; it even managed to fend off a couple of ravens swoop & squalling to try to bully it off its perch.
Great Grey Shrike
Saw a bird in the garden I hadn't seen before looked like a tree creeper but bigger, white/grey,black stripe over eye bigger than a tit....then saw a couple out on the Strines road (about a mile away) exactly the same. Theres always bird spotters out there and I asked what it was and he told me, apparently there are a few that nest near upper Midhope...will keep my eyes open for more.
having redwings visit out garden most days at the moment, lovely birds
