Comment overheard on the train from a Grindleford local:
"Walked the Grindleford Gallop yesterday, great day until the runners caught up with us, then got fed up with being sworn at to get out of the way at every style".
Even if this is only partly true and it was only a minority of the runners its still a shame and something we could do without.
Sadly this race seems to attract more than its fair share of twonks. I didn't see any walkers being harassed on Saturday but I did see plenty of wall/gate climbing at congested stiles and liberties being taken with the route. There were a few troublesome walkers who took to the Monsal Trail four abreast and just to make sure you couldn't sneak past, waved their walking sticks around over the verge. Rather like trying to get past Boadicea's chariot, but without the sense of history.Quote:

Maybe all change for next year - one of the organisers commented to me that walkers were a PIA. The organisers have to get up at the crack of dawn then hang around for walkers some of whom had set off just before the runners and taken 3 hrs to get the White Rake! Why a walker would want to pay £12 to do a route they could do any day of the year is beyond me. And as for those sodding poles they carry - the number of times I've nearly seen people blinded, and yes they always seem to walk 4 abreast and block stiles. Having said that, the race did originate as a Walkers event when it was the Thornbridge 20 then several people decided to run it and things escalated. Maybe a time for a parting of the ways?
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I guess those of you that run the Grindleford Gallop might be interested in a new event I'm putting on, the Peaks Challenge 20.
It's on Sunday 13th September (just over 2 weeks time). It's got quite a lot in common with the Grindleford Gallop (same part of the Peaks, similar distance, but it has a "suggested" route which you don't have to follow).
2 weeks before 9 Edges though which goes through much of the same course.

Done it a few times. It combines a LDW challenge walk, with the walkers starting earlier, so, by Great Longstone (or thereabouts) you'll be encountering plenty of stick-brandishing walkers! A lot of the route is on tracks and trails - so quite quick. Not sure how much the total ascent is, but there are probably 4 hills of any significance. First from Froggatt up past Riley Graves to Eyam - steep in places. Second is over Great Longstone Moor - boggy. Third is up through Ball Cross Woods from Bakewell Station - steep and muddy. Last one (and the best one) is up to Wellingtons Monument from Baslow, so you need to save a bit for this. Winning time was a little over 2 hours 35 last year I think? (just checked - Andy Pead 1st in 2:28:18 - probably course record?) First 30 will be inside 3 hours.
