When I did this last year, they had to pull a few walkers out of the mud. At one point a very kind and well-organised marshall had put his rucksack down to indicate the line we should take from his checkpoint to avoid the bogs.

It's certainly wetter this year than last year. Lets hope for a dry spell or the bog monsters may be well fed.

Hmm, I ran this last year and I *think* the marhsal was IanDarkPeak who was up near Cut Gate. Early days, but I think it's where the bog monster lives no matter how dry the rest is.... :eek:

He's a spoil sport that Ian DP :rolleyes: . Half the fun is watching the bog monster at work :eek:.

If you check out google earth it's pretty obvious. Its funny as on some maps this path is marked. The path continues past the cairn and down to the upper Derwent valley via the Sheperds meeting stones. a lovely quiet arera.

I ran round the course last week end and I went up Cutgate tonight. Derwent Edge is very wet and heavy going but wasn't as boggy as I thought it was going to be. The Bogmonster was looking very hungry however!

Cut gate is a doddle now as it has all been relaid making for a faster climb.

Only two weeks to go and the week dry weather has started to dry out Derwent Edge...sort of.;)

some not so good news.

Whilst out on a training excercise WMRT search Dog Bryn was involved in an awful accident resulting in a very severe injury to one of it's legs. The result is around 12-18 months convelesence and a vets bill around £4,000 which the handler is having to pay.

The team have rallied round and have already raised a substantial amount of this. One of the team members sons has offered to have his legs waxed by his older sister for charity and for your pleasure (and if he can hold his nerve) will have this done at the Grin and Bear It :eek: So if you hear a young man screaming in agony to the sounds of a giggling girl please be generous.

Bryn is a very experienced search dog and has been called out all over the country by police and other rescue teams not just on the local hills.

Aye, was out around Mickleden and Cut Gate this am and still wet in places. Didn't meet the bog monster today but I sense he's lurking just below the surface...:p

Poor critter, hope he recovers and is well looked after. Was he not insured by PetPlan or some such then?

I'd go for fell shoes every time - as IDP has said, the climb out of Langsett is a well trodden path with loose rocks/stones then you're into open peat land - very springy after dry weather BUT very boggy in parts after rain..there are some deep bogs too!

In the main the last few miles are steady paths and trail, but I would recommend trail shoes and DEFO not road shoes.

Yep, if the clag is in you'll defo need to navigate...but on a clear day like today you can see Manchester..well...;)

Quite a lot of runners out there today, not to mention the ramblers and MTBers. Maybe there was a recce on, or just plain enjoying the sunshine. Glorious day for it! :D
