Re: Fellsman - where to stay?
A few of us are travelling from Ireland to do the Fellsman in 08 - can anyone recommend somewhere suitable to stay? Preferably close to a good pub!
Thanks

Re: Fellsman - where to stay?
The rules state : Competitors must wear (or carry) trousers, thermal tights or breeches manufactured for fell walking. Substantial trousers are also acceptable...Tracksuit trousers...will not be acceptable.
So what does this mean exactly? In the photos of the event people seem to be wearing shorts, 3/4's, lycra-type tights, tracksters...none of which seem to meet this requirement (although shorts can be warn during daylight hours, so I imagine 3/4's/tights are ok then too) but you need to carry "trousers, thermal tights or breeches manufactured for fell walking" as well. I would have thought Tracksters are classed as "Tracksuit trousers", so can I wear Solomon RAID tights? They are made for running...sort of....or do I have to carry some Craghoppers or Rohan trousers too? I have some zip-off leg North Face treking keks, but I'm buggered if I going to run 60 odd miles in them, I'd be rubbed raw by 10 miles.

Hi Jimbob
I wear Sauncony long shorts for this event and carry a base layer long thermal pants for the night section which you have to put on at the grouping up CP, However I roll these up so they remain 3/4 length. If i get cold i roll them down. if you are a runner than this is enough, I would imagine if you were a walker going slower and therefore spending longer on the hills you might want to take something more substantial.
I think if you contact the organisor you would be ok with RH treksters, I believe he is more worried about cotton tracksuits.
The other option would be to start the last section (Park Rash)before the grouping time limit 7.30pm like Mike Hartell that way you can be back in around 12 hours and have a beer before a good nights sleep:D
