Hi Luke, sorry to hear about your latest set back. You'll be back mate, your determination and self diagnosis of your injuries makes this thread a must read. Keep the faith and see you soon.
Cheers Darren, i've remembered i had a really nasty bad back on the day, my dodgy disc was playing up and it was cramped up really badly all the way home. I think it may have added to the problem. I got out of the habit of doing spinal releases and mobilisations before winter races because it's almost always wet and muddy, and i don't like risking getting thorns in my good waterproof cag.
Just a single 3.5m lap of Fewston Reservoir today, felt good, no ITB problems. For some reason i've entered the Leeds 10K in July, so most of my training going forward will be geared towards a fast time in that, as i only want to do it once to get a time. I need to start midweek XC/fartlek back up again and build up to about 8m of distance before anything else. I might do the Fairfield this year, and maybe the Waltz and the Coledale; they all suit the type of training that was working for me last year.
Midweek XC began again on thursday, 2.5m/290', that's me back out twice a week now. My legs hurt the next day, i'm out of shape after that rest. I might go faster in a canoe in certain places.
Today's run- High Crag short run, 4.9m/935'
Attachment 8397
Really nice short route when you need something a bit easy, views from High Crag were nice if a bit hazy. I always forget how much of a slog it is up to the crags, a fairly consistent runnable climb such that you'd feel guilty dropping to a walk on any part of it; nice local route recommended for any local forumites. It was warm in the valley, but there was a slight nip in the air higher up. I cooled off by standing in the weirpool below Parcevall Hall as my right knee ligaments were a bit sore.
It looks like my injury that forced me out of the KWL has gone away, but i've been experiencing an unstable right knee joint recently which has needed a couple of Chiropractor trips to get it whipped back into place. The problem may have originated from a lumbar spine complaint i've had for a while and be compensation related i'm told, the knee joint has become unstable through lack of tension in my right ITB, and has been clicking like mad and the lateral ligaments have been very sore and still are. I've flipped my matress which seems to have helped my back a lot, and also my knee clicking.
Never been so ill in my life, housebound all weekend with flu can't even think straight.
Dragged myself out for a nasty wheezy 4m or so tonight. Hard to breathe, chest and throyt really hurting...that's throyt as in coyt, not throat as in stoat...it is up this end anyway maybe not in Lancashire though.
Another wheezy outing round midweek XC tonight with plenty of stops to cough and splutter, couldn't really call it training if i'm honest. My chest is clearing a bit.
An improvised 7.5m/1650' route near Bolton Abbey today. Out along the Valley of Desolation route in reverse, picked up the route up to Simon's Seat, then peeled off left down to Barden Aqueduct and back to the cafe. I'm not sure if i'm training or getting back into training really, my chest is still rattling and i'm always blowing out of my arse for some reason. A better run than recent weeks tbh.
Midweek XC tonight, 2.5m/290'
I was a lot faster round this route last summer, the mud is still an issue though. My legs are burning on the fast climbs and i find it difficult to hold speed, i'm hoping i'll get more comfortable if i keep pushing it hard.
Another improvised route around Barden Fells today, 9m/2000'. It was a route i hadn't planned, but the leaking headgasket on the car was causing problems and making it to Kettlewell wasn't likely. 9m is a lot further than i normally run so i might end up in trouble this week. There were some newborn lambs in the fields heading up to Hammerthorn Gate, they weren't there last week! It's looking like something very flat and local next week, as the car will be in bits.
Midweek Fartlek tonight, 2.9m/395'
That 9.2 miler at the weekend has given me some Articular Cartilage problems which showed up tonight. It was a bit reckless really, but the recovery has to be pushed now and again.
Midweek fartlek is a nightmare with all the mud, but it doesn't half demand commitment from you. I might have gone off a bit too fast on some of the fast sections and blew up too early. I nearly threw up on a tree a minute or so after finishing- that's proper training tbh.
Nearly threw up? Lightweight
37.5m on the bike today, Buffers and back, i didn't want to risk a run after the spot of knee soreness i had last week.
Oh yeah, took the big Chevin on the way back, smashed it- and without any throwing up. You've got to have balls to take that one on with old skool gearing.
Midweek XC tonight, 2.5m/290'
My speed round this route might be coming back, knees feel remarkably good after the weekend's massive bike ride.
KWL Arant Haw today, 4.8m/1945'
Probably one of the best races of the series this. I've had a week of no work so i felt pretty good, but still had to go steady as i can't remember when the last time i hit a big climb was. Runnable hills don't prepare you for what this race serves up, you need to be out racing every week hitting big climbs. I nearly came a cropper at the foot of Winder, legs went to jelly and i landed on a locked out knee joint somehow.
Bike ride into work today, 8m each way, some kneecap pain showed up in the last mile or so. It's the 4 days of walking around and kneeling down about the factory that does it, it wears me down gradually. I need out of front line engineering really.
Dale Head Dash yesterday, 2m/1300'
Hard climb has always been a bit of a problem area in the past, all the old problems keep coming back. With 2 successive weekends of it under my belt i'm feeling better than i thought i might, but i do have an ankle eversion injury from the sheer roughness of the drop off Dale Head yesterday. It might be a good time to run a 10k trail and get a target time for the Leeds 10, i'll try for a fartlek midweek too.
I dropped the midweek run because i wanted to feel fresh for a 10k time trial today. My legs were still sore from Dale Head anyway and my back was giving me some grief.
Today's run was 2 laps of Swinsty reservoir which works out to 10.4km. I completed this in an embarrasing 44.25 which nearly blew me off my feet when i checked the watch, i was stone cold certain of being in the thirties and i'm not quite sure what's gone wrong. What i know is that i was struggling to find a constant pace; the smallest rises would throw a spanner in the works and i'd end up blowing too much and actually got diaphragm cramp several times. When i ran the dam on lap 2 the optimum pace was much easier to find with it being totally flat. The average for this effort is about 42mins for 10k. I'm not sure if to blame myself or the terrain; i could always try not using a mechanical stopwatch as i think they have to be marine certified to be accurate when they're jigging around, and this is just a plastic wind-up job.
Ride into work today, 8m each way, back awful. The bike seems to be working better for me now so long as i use the correct taping setup on my knees. I've tried replicating it using straps or electrical tape, but it doesn't work, it has to be done the one way and that's the only way it'll work. I'd like to be doing this once a week ideally, but bad weather will stop me, older bikes suffer badly from getting wet and caked in crap and i don't run new bikes. I also don't like riding in the rain. It would be nice to get it going for the summer, i feel my fitness would benefit from be burying myself on Kirkstall Rd once a week.
Now upgraded to 'back f*$!ed'. Off work with some sort of disc problem again, not good for my training schedule for the Leeds 10k.
Being mostly supine for the time being has enabled me to get the first 60pgs of Studmarks on the Summits done and dusted. The short section on footwear was a bit of an eye-opener, i don't know how those who chose to run in flat soled gym pumps ever got out of it alive. There is also a sentence detailing the diet of a guides racer, which is described as consisting mostly of: beef, chicken, eggs, port and brandy. Imagine pitching that to UK Cycling.
Deary me, bit QAH...Midweek XC tonight 2.5m/290', felt very flat and slow, i think a crap time is on the cards for the Leeds 10k.
First 5k Parkrun this morning, Bramley Parkrun, came 4th but faded badly on the penultimate lap and lost a place having lost touch with the leaders a lap earlier. I ran 20.04 and need to shave a minute off that at the least. Unfortunately the whole park stank of doggy doos; the mowers had been round at some time in the week and churned up all the barker's eggs that people hadn't picked up, it was really quite unpleasant.
I'm aiming to run this every week, this pushes me to 3 sessions a week, but i think it's time it happened.
I saw your name in the results Luke, and pics on facebook - notice you descending on the grass. I wasn't there this week but I'm Run Director next week and am there usually at least twice a month, either running or volunteering, as it's literally 3 mins easy jog from home.
Got a link to the pics, MT, can't find any recent ones anywhere though i did see the guy with the camera. I didn't fancy the tarmac coming down that hill!
On this facebook page mr b -it's a public group so hopefully you should be able to see them - Simon Cullingworth is there week in week out: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1606...=br_tf&qsefr=1
My arse cheeks were killing this morning, just goes to show how you use different muscle sets for flat speed running. It's probably lack of condition in these bits that let me down yesterday, bits that don't seem to get used for runnable climbing.
Today's run- Rabbithole Run, 5.8m/1300'
Attachment 8457
I had ITB type soreness on the side of my right knee for most of the way round, it's chronic things like this that stop me training on consecutive days; i don't feel like i had a quality run, but it was to be expected all things considered. I suspected i might get some aggro and wanted to go out on the bike really, but bike is quite bad for my back and i'm still a bit sore from 2 weeks of hell recently. Same plan next weekend, 2 sessions, parkrun sat. but i'll rest sun. and do the Austwick Amble monday. One very fast session, one 7-8ml distance session and the old faithful midweek XC, that's the plan anyway...I'd better check my tape stocks.
Midweek fartlek tonight, 2.9m/350'

I tried doing some of Noel's quicksteps on the footy field to warm up. I think i was counting seconds too fast and found it really tiring, i managed about 60m not the suggested 600 so i think i need to slow my steps down.
The woods were a mess again with all the rain and grip was hard to come by in certain places. I really buried myself on the fast sections, doing it properly requires proper mental toughness and it hurts so badly. I'm k taping on both knees to give the move to 3 sessions a week the best chance it's got, i'm also going to stop using Voltarol after reading a post on another thread by Mike T, though i may use it for serious problems.
Bramley parkrun this morning, felt a bit fuzzy after a few bottles of Punk IPA the night before. Cheers to Multiterrainer and the rest of the volunteers.
Today's race- Austwick Amble, 8m/1200' hot hot hot as they say in Brazil
Another race i'd have preferred to have been running the other way round, the tarmac and gravel was just a pounding my legs didn't need in the final mile and a bit. After initially struggling a bit on the climb on the way out i found good speed out to the turn at Sulber Nick, but then started struggling a bit on the way back. I was aiming to build a bit of distance into my game in preparation for the Leeds 10k, i tried pretty hard to keep going and never walked.
Midweek XC tonight- 2.5m/290'
Had a fairly steady run tonight, i've got a healthy selection of injuries fighting to be the first to drop me back to 2 runs a week. Articular Cartilage pain on and off, some daft groin strain thing, knee tendon soreness here and there, left Achiiles being temperamental, lateral knee ligament soreness...any one of these could and has hit me hard previously with the exception of the daft groin thing which may just bugger off anyway. It's a shame parkrun is on a saturday, i could do with a rest day before sunday's fell run really. I'm hoping to just htfu and shrug parkrun off in a 'tis but a scratch' monty python kind of fashion, if i have to run a flat 5k on my own a day earlier i won't try nearly as hard- i know it.
