a bit of snow on route today but it will be gone by the weekend which is looking good at the moment.
at the moment the mamnick road is closed for road works, it may be prudents to allow a bit of extra time if you are coming that way.

http://splitapps.derbyshire.gov.uk/road_closures/ lists the road closure as finishing on Friday 24th.
The diversion for me(coming from Buxton direction) adds another 15mins to go via Castleton and Hope if the road is still closed on 26th
I was studying the route in great detail last night as I plotted it on Tracklogs. Can anyone advise on the final route to Ringing Roger from Grindsbrook Clough? From the map it seems to make sense to fork left on a level contour and pass above a spring before climbing from Golden Clough. That's without knowing what the ground looks like, of course. Total ascent works out at just over 4,600'.
With the exception of route details I notice that instructions on the DPFR site are from 2016. Does anyone know if they still apply for this year - e.g. same kit instructions in view of another good forecast?

everyone else will be on the edge path. Moving of the Grindslow CP from the knoll to the path has removed any option of a direct line (the down and up)

I'm puzzled. I thought we were following the edge path to CP14, from where the path continues down Grindsbrook Clough, but we don't want to go down there. Looking more closely at some considerable magnification I see a left turn onto the edge path that takes us on a wild goose chase. I'll update my map. Thanks Nic.
(Incidentally it was the 'down and up' I was concerned about - down to the finish and up to Ringing Roger and back!)
Final stats 21.1 miles with 4,622' of ascent.
The route notes on the website say you must follow the edge path all the way along Kinder. So if I somehow manage to beat the cut-offs, that's what I'll be doing!
Only bit of the route I'm not clear on is the descent into the woods north of Win Hill but I expect it'll make sense when I get there! Do we descend immediately then contour along forest tracks, or do we contour above the woods and then do a there-and-back to the checkpoint?
My info as it stands is if you want you can go below the path ie drop down contour etc but you can't cross the plateau. so stick too path. To cp below Winn Hill, I know of no restrictions, either follow the obvious path or take your best reccied line..
Kit I'd bring every thing just in case. it will still be full water proofs map and compass etc. the extras may or may not be eased, bear in mind that over recent years we have had many serious incidents of Hypothermia so the RO may err on the side of caution

For future reference, at Win Hill we were directed down the path into the woods to pick up the contouring forest track - the option above the woods was not allowed.

Edale Skyline 2018 - the main skyline page on the DPFR website says new route
- anyone know is it the reverse of last year(checkpoints are numbered ANTICLOCKWISE),
- with a trip out to Grindslow Knoll as well?
- but minus the diversion into the forest down to Ladybower?
i.e looks like the route I remember from 2015, but in reverse?
(the subsidiary skyline pages still show last year's route and the cutoff at Edale Cross AFTER the cutoff at Mam Nick)

I'm going to stick my neck out and say the new route will be quicker. Fresh legs downhill from Brown Knoll to Rushop Edge and Mam Tor to the bottom of Lose Hill should be pretty quick. Obviously Win Hill needs bagging but it's not as intense as the Lose Hill climb.

We will be applying cutoff times at 3 controls, provisionally there are:
•Mam Nick (CP6) 2 hours
•Townhead Bridge (CP10) 3hours 15 minutes
•Path onto Kinder Scout (CP14) 4hours 30 minutes
Edale Skyline Equipment 2018
This is a long race in which there is little respite from the often 'challenging' weather. Ask anyone who was there in 2007 or 2015, or take a couple of minutes to look here:

The required kit list goes beyond the standard FRA kit list for an AL race and is as follows:
•Waterproof cagoule with taped seams and integral hood
•Waterproof over-trousers with taped seams
•Shoes and socks
•Hat (we'll accept a Buff, but would prefer you carried something warmer)
•Gloves
•Map appropriate for navigating round the course
•Whistle
•Compass
•Food (400 kcal minimum) = at least 2 mars bars, preferable more!
•Leggings (at least ¾ length)
•Two long sleeved tops
At the organiser's discretion this list may be relaxed on the day, but all competitors should be prepared to carry all items listed above. We will have no hesitation in barring you from competing if you turn up without the stipulated kit. There will be kit checks for all runners at registration. There may also be random kit checks at the start and finish.
In addition, for the safety of you and fellow competitors, we recommend that you also consider carrying the following:
•Mobile phone
•Bivy bag
•in the event of bad weather a warmer hat
Sorry if you think this all sounds rather draconian, but it is done with your best interests at heart.
Edale Skyline 2018 On the Day
General Information
The Don Morrison Memorial Edale Skyline Fell Race has been going since 1974. It is a long, tough, early season race, with often challenging conditions – we have had runners retiring with heatstroke and hypothermia! You must carry the stipulated kit. Take care on the hills and have a good day out. Please note the following:
Car Parking
As in previous years, car parking will be in a field near Shaw Wood farm, on the road between Edale and Barber Booth SK120851. Please follow marshal's instructions. Have some change ready – there will be a charge of £3 per car. Please car share if at all possible. All car park charges are donated to Edale Village School. The will be a signed off-road route from the car park to registration.
Registration
In Edale Village Hall, between 8.30am and 10.15am. If you arrive later than this, sorry, you won't be able to run.
You will be asked to fill in an entry form and complete a kit check. Please make sure your kit conforms to the standards set out on the Equipment tab of the Skyline pages. You must get the kit check completed before you can collect your number.
Collect your number from the relevant table - numbers will be generated after the closing date by SportIdent - they will be in Surname order, so it should be simple to find the correct table! Then take your number to the SI card table where you will be issued with a Sportident dibber, unless you bring your own (if you do bring your own you must still go the the SportIdent table with your dibber).
Keep the vest number at its original size and pin it to your chest. Please show this vest number to marshals at all checkpoints, even if you are wearing a jacket over the top.
Once you have registered, we assume that you start the race. If you do not start, please follow the procedure for retirements.
There will be a dibber box on the footbridge, just before the start field, so we can double check starters.

Procedure at Checkpoints
Register your dibber in the dibber box (it will go 'beep' - more than one beep is unnecessary but not a problem).
Show your vest number to the marshal. Please give the marshal enough time to record your number.
Please follow any instructions from marshals. If you look unfit to continue, you may be asked to retire.
There is no dibber at CP1 Ringing Roger (outward), CP2 Top of Grindsbrook, CP7 Mam Tor, CP8 Back Tor, CP11 Fulwood Stile Lane, CP12 Hope Brink and CP15 Coffin Rock.

Bad Weather
Organisers may shorten the route or even cancel the event. The final decision may be delayed as late as race day, but obviously we will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible by posting a message on this site.

Drinks
We will try to supply water at CP6 Mam Nick and CP10 Hope Townhead Bridge. Drinks may run out on a warm day. There is very little water on the route, you are advised to take a water bottle with you.
Finish
1.Use your dibber to record your finish time.
2.Let marshals record your number.
3.Hand in your vest number to the marshal.
4.Take your dibber directly to the village hall for the download of your split times and return your dibber. If you don't download we don't know you are back and safe. There will be a charge of £30 for any lost dibbers.

Thanks for the info Ian, very comprehensive :-) We are hoping to get a men's Team out from Buxton AC. This will be MrRTS's final race of his 50@50. Celebration party at ours after. Although looking at his race schedule for the rest of the year there will be little rest. Once this is over he is concentrating of the English & British Champs, The Lakeland Classics and some AL races in England and Wales. Me ... I'm going for more of the local fell races this year as Beau Dog and I are not on support duties for his Challenge :-) The Edale Skyline is beyond my capabilities at the moment and I know I would not make the cut offs.
So looking forward to supporting and cheering :-)
Yes, this isn't the slightly anarchic off the wall sport that used to like so much as a back of the pack runner.
My guess is they are referring to the many people who book up early for champs races with little thought, just because "it's the champs".... without much consideration as to whether they'll be up for such a long race, fit enough so early in the season, etc...
I've often seen discussion on here about actual numbers on the starting line, compared to online entries, and it's invariably centred around Champs races.
I'll be entering. I'm also really looking forward to the Buttermere Horseshoe as a champs race. If the weather is bad (or indeed excessively hot), I can see that one being absolute carnage...

Last time skyline was a champs race (2013) entries were full by mid-afternoon and a reigning champion (open) missed out. However on that occassion the RO held some spaces back for people who could prove a challenger for a champs/champs long race.
imo I think if anyone enters and doesn't start without a good reason (injury/health, unavoidable family issues - not having your calendar in order 7 weeks in advance is a bit poor if you know places are at a premium) you deserve a bit of a slagging!
The RO could have asked on the entry form "How many champ counters have you ever entered and not completed?" with any answer above zero resulting in no place. That would thin the rush down a bit and then the genuine special pleading champ contender cases could be granted a place at leisure.:)

Be interesting when Buttermere entry opens, isn't that traditionally a lower entry limit (which admittedly it never gets near to). Perhaps it will be upped for champs year....
Hey, I never mentioned dispensation/feelings of sorrow for champs contenders. 2013 was just an example. I think anyone of any stripe, speed or hairstyle who misses an entry but wants to be there has a right to feel narked off at those that dont show 'cos it's their butcher's birthday drinks or some such.
Of course I hope entries = start line attendees.

I can't recall now when a frisson became associated with champ entries but I do recall 1990 (just yesterday really) when Colin Donnelly, who had won the British Champs for the previous three consecutive years, did not get a place in the Ben Nevis and so was unable to defend his title. This caused a fluttering in the dovecote and so was the last time the Ben was selected as a British Champs counter .

Full already, and now operating a waiting list.
There are a lot of very unhappy people on the Fell Runners FB page. I'm not playing devils advocate or anything but everyone knew for ages it opened at midnight and were warned it would fill quick. Actually it still had 200 places left at 7am. Surely if you wanted to get in you would of made sure you were there ready to enter with all your details ready to go. The FRA are getting the flack but they have no say on when a Champs race goes live or how they do their entry system. The Organisers do a brilliant job and no matter how they do it they will get some bloody flack. People seem to forget that they are volunteers that do not get paid for their time. Ben Nevis opens on Sunday at 12 noon! Give me midnight any day! I will be sitting in the car with laptop entering MrRTS on that one while he is racing the Long Mynd Valleys. I'm guessing a lot of runners will be racing on Sunday all over Britain. The thing is ... he wants to race it so we are dealing with it.
Anyway here is my idea ......... British/English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Ireland Championship races, open 2 days before for those that have competed in 3 or more of the Championship races the year before. That way you get the previous years winners in. Say 50% of places could go this way then open it up to everyone else 2 days later. You would still need to get your finger out but in my mind if you really want to be in it you make it happen. We were on holiday at Robin Hoods Bay last year when Snowdon went live at midnight. We had worked out that the nearest Wi-fi signal was in Whitby so we were sitting in a car park outside Morrisons at 11.50pm waiting. - MrRTS got in :-)
Agree with pretty much everything you say there.... I'm not a fan of the FB page, and didn't see the original post from the potential 'champs contender' who seems to have missed out. But a look down the start list shows that pretty much all of the 'big names' managed to get themselves sorted. I'm sure a well-worded email to the organiser explaining the situation would perhaps help his cause, rather than an angry rant.
But i don't want to get into someone's personal argument or circumstances. Considering, as you mention above, the voluntary organisation of pretty much all races, the system does generally work. If anything more advanced, such as earlier entry for category leaders etc, then it's a luxury in my opinion.
I assume they know from previous years the typical percentage of "no shows" and over subscribe on that basis. So does it really matter as the number that run on the day will be somewhat similar to the number that is allowed to run in the event.
In fact they make a lot more money this way:)
