I would like something reasonablly challenging to work towards in a years time. Can anyone make some suggestions please? Also, I am considering the 3 peaks race in Yorkshire. Can someone let me have their knowledge and expertise on how best to train for this? All help is very much appreciated as I live in Northants and dont really have any fells close by.
Many thanks in advance.:D
Welcome Dooley
Check out the PPP threads there are a few but they are full of use full bit of info.
Basically though get the mileage and climbing in and don't get carried away going up PYG.
Good luck
Re: 3 peaks race training
PPP means Three Peaks. You'll sometimes see it referred it as 3P's too. PYG is Pen Y Ghent, the first of the peaks on the fell race route
If you look through http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showt...Hill-Runs-2010 there are many photos of Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough ;)

As my name suggests i'm such a dooley girl so can someone please let me know what PPP and PYG stand for? I'm sure i'll pick up the lingo soon.
Northants can be what i suppose you fell experts consider to be undulating, there are a few good hills for hill reps. There are a lot of nice bridle ways around for off road running. The peak district is the nearest and i'd make a day of it when i go.
oops :o Sorry Dooley, Never assume eh!
Thanks DT for explaining. Make sure one of your hill reps very steep. Whernside is a killer

I'd advise do what you can locally by improvising with hils and off road running. I live to the South east of Nottingham and try and get to the Peak at weekends in the winter or the occassional mid week fell race during the Summer which usually start at 19:30 pm leaving time to get there after work, although that might still be tto far for you?
As others have said its great to have an aim, but build up for that aim by doing other things whether they be challenges or races or simply training runs/days out. I do know that in and around Tring on the Herts, Beds border that there are alot of good fell runners training on the steep slopes of the Chilterns so it can be done. I think doing some X country in the autumn and winter can help build up some speed and stamina too which are all transfereble to the fells.

I'm also new(ish) to fell running, having been a road runner and occasional fell runner for quite a while, and likewise am planning something like PPP or the Edale Skyline for next year, so this thread has been pretty handy! I've walked both and feel it's now my turn to run them..
Just looked at the route on the Three Peaks website - that route up Whernside doesn't look walkable or runable up!?

The line up Whernside is walkable, runable-ish, walkable, runable-ish, walkable and then crawlable on all foursable in that order :)

It's challenging and will cruelly expose you if you went off too fast for the first hour. As I was told before I started, the race only begins at the Hill Inn.

Ah I must remember to include some crawling in my training then! :p
