Getter better soon, Mike. I'll see you on the new Calderdale route in 2012, and before I hope!
I enjoy reading others' blog reports as well. It's an excellent way to learn about new events, and enter some of them!

Results are up http://www.calderdalehike.org.uk/results/2011.html
Drop 'em a note Mountain Man. I've done that in previous years and they've sorted it out very quickly. They'll want to get it right as much as the runners might want to.
It's hidden in one of the pages - 'info<at>calderdalehike.org.uk'.
They had me down as a 27 mile walker with a time an hour slower than actual. I have dropped them an email as well
7.18 sounds about right for me, it felt more like 7h17m59 secs to be honest though:rolleyes:
Grid refs are up for this years Hike
I've already entered. Must get Tracklogging soon.
Me too. See you there. Must spend some time pouring over map and checking new route now- or even better get out there for a run
And me. I'd better get training a bit harder so I can try to keep you in my sights, Karen. You usually seem to find the quickest options, & I don't suppose I'll end up recceing any of it!
Hi is anyone likely to be reccing the new long 37 route? I've had a quick glance and some of it is the opposite direction of Haworth Hobble and the Hebden. There are some bits where its looking like it could be quicker to go down tarmac roads - e.g Jerusalem Farm to Luddenden Foot...
How do people intend to get from Hoof Stones Height to Widdop Reservoir?
not sure - have been trying to use google earth and wonder if there is a path N along the boundary line that would join up with the big W-E track
Been up today to check that bit out! Can follow the fence boundary from hoof stones which will take you right back to bridleway without getting lost and is pretty good running or if you are feelin brave compass off hoof stones and aim or the two sets of rocks ( if you can see them) shorter but tough underfoot very hard tussocks.......beautiful ay up there today though!
Oh thank you for that - I was going to go and have a nosey on Saturday at that bit, I will probably still go and have a look and do it as part of a circular run somehow, map will be coming out today! I'm struggling with the bit from Nab End to Erringden Grange - I know there may well be plenty of people to follow, but its always better to know where you are going I find! Has anyone any suggestions? - I was thinking road Dauber Bridge up onto Erringden Moor, but its an unecessary climb up Broadhead Clough if the footpath from Great House which skirts round Cock Hill Moor is good underfoot and maybe the faster option?? Choices choices!!
For the first bit I reckon it will go up the road all the way to Moor End where there is a bridleway on a walled track which takes you up to Nab End.
Thats as far as I've got.
Cathy
I was up there too, after the Heptonstall fell race. Didn't see anyone else, funnily enough - it's a bit bleak up there isn't it.
I tried the direct line. It's not too bad going down to the shooting hut between the Gorple Ressers. There are a few places where the heather is knee deep but a lot of it is shorth new heather and even burnt off in places. After the shooting hut it's a bit of a nightmare with loads of big hard tussocks. It took me 49 minutes to get down from the top to Widdop dam.
I wonder whether going the long way round along the boundary fence and onto the track might be less energy sapping, and possibly also quicker. I'll try out the long way if I get the chance.
MarkL _ I will try this section on Saturday and let you know - I'm tending to agree with you about going the direct line to the pennine bridleway track and then using the track to Widdop, much easier underfoot/less energy zapping.
You would have known if you had seen us i had my big husky dog attached to me dragging me around!
Heading up there wed eve to have another look at the direct route....but yes could certainly be better unning heading for the boundary fence and track! Oh choices choices!
Anybody tried following the boundary fence and then big track as opposed to a straight line from Hoof Stones to Widdop?
Is there a definitive view as to which is the most efficient line?
Or has someone worked it out but they're not telling!!
Hiya,
I have tried running down the boundary line to the bridle way and then also tried turning right from the trig and following that boundary fence too to the shooting hut and the res. they are similar distance. 0.5 miles ish between them but personally i found the running turning right and following the permissive path and fence boundary then onto the footpath which joins the res not far from the cp a better route and quickerrunning.
Hmm...
It's going to take another trip out there if I can make the time.
I've never done the Hike before, does the route always include tricky route choices?
But the route only changes every 3 years or so- so this year will be harder than the last two where experience has paid off
OK, it looks like a couple of days off work for reccies.
On a completely different note - the kit instructions say you need a survival bag as opposed to a space blanket.
What do people normally carry, if not one of those heavy duty orange plastic sacks?
NO. tiny very thin one about the size of my wallet. Cost about 3 quid. I think Pete Bland may sell them but not sure
Ill be out recceing on the bike on sat! Ill keep an eye out for lone man looking for checkpoints! I agree too close!
I was thinking of getting the map out a couple of days beforehand & guessing what might be the fastest route. It's called the "good enough" approach. I don't think it'll spoil the surprise too much. Mind you, I do think the best events are the ones where you don't know the route until the day - Mountain Marathons, South Shropshire Circular for instance. It would be good if they did that every 3 years on the Calderdale Hike too, rather than publish the new route in advance.
Now that would be brilliant and it would even out the field more giving those that can navigate an edge on the fast runners that know a route like the back of there hand
I am missing Calderdale this year in favour of the Coledale Horseshoe, now that is going to be a busy fellrace.
Enjoy it People
Yeah, your right. I've deleted the post.
Have a good one everyone.
same here no criticism each to there own:thumbup:
just wish I could keep up with Vici who has receed several bits, but no hope there!
It will be a wing and a prayer but i may have an adventure or two!
