Well done to everyone who ran yesterday/today, whether they finished or not. I found it really tough with the weather and stuggled with cramp for a few miles but am delighted that I finished in 11.57, big improvement on 12.40 from last year. I ran with a few people along the way including Geoff P who joined me in some necessary hill walking. Massive congrats to julie Gardner for first lady with a fantastic time. She looked so fresh as well when I came in.
It is such a tough race but I loved it, still hate the canal, MWW and Tower Road with a passion but I did manage a dubious walk run strategy.
I am now however in so much pain I can't envisag ever walking again.
Well done to all who completed, its tough. Very well done Sarah, you went v well down the middle wood way, i was tagging on behind but started feeling v queazy resulting in multiple throwing up, walked a lot then went a bit better at end, pleased to knock 22 mins of last year tho. You must be dead chuffed, great run. Well done Julie G too , amazing!

I'm glad I reccied round Earl Sterndale and had my trusty Garmin with me as I was completely on my own with no-on in sight from shortly after Earl S until right to the very end- so thanks to all the folks here who offered route choice tips.
A great day out though, I've got quite a nice vest shaped suntan this morning.
Well done everyone on what is a very tough race, glad the weather stayed pretty good for you all. Did it a couple of years ago and still have nightmares about that disused railway line, that section is soooo long. How did Daz do?
Well done to everyone today/yesterday. Some fantastic scenery and some tough walking - especially up to Chinley Churn.
I did my ususal retire at Peak Forest so hats off to you who went on and finished.
In terms of running I found I wasn't doing half as much as hoped - I know it's more runnable in the second half but is there an argument for putting my hiking boots on and just going around more steadilly next time?
Saw some interesting things this year, who else saw them - Red Arrows display, loop the loop an all, apparently at Chatsworh just after 5.30pm, i was on that track to earl sterndale i think; later going up charity lane (Macc Forest) saw eyes reflecting from the forest on the left, didnt look like sheep, a group of young stags; finally driving home about 1.30 in morning at bottom of mow cop saw a strange creature in the road (not a lost Bullock Smithier), reddish, small fox size but with black on its neck, thought pine marten but then thought, no impossible, still not sure what it was pretty sure not a fox I see hundreds of them, wrong shape etc.
I saw the red arrows but I have to confess me and Phil thought you were hallucinating when you asked us if we'd seen a group of stags :) I remember you being behind us on MWW and then when we got off you'd gone. I'm not so sure that I would describe my going as good on MWW it was more run 40, walk 40, run 10, walk 50 ;) I am gobsmacked I got in under 12, I think I had an hour from WB to get in under 12 but it seemed a fairly big ask to do 5 miles that quickly when my legs were so tired. You did brilliantly and just about spot on your 12.17 schedule then :)
You're not wrong on the railway line, the long dark tunnel to nowhere, it seemed...On the other hand, the sun setting over the peaks as we moved towards Brands Top, and the full moon low in the sky behind us not long after are sights that will stay with me for a while. Fantastic event, and well done to all participants. 13:15 was a bit slower than I hoped for but not unhappy given how challenging the terrain was. The climb up Cavedale coming out of Castleton in particular seemed to go on forever!Quote:

started to perk up slightly as evening approached and temperature dropped, but had stopped thinking about schedule of any description by Miller's Dale
the chill wind on the tops either side of Chelmorton brought me "mentally" back into the game and I worked out that if I pushed a bit I could get sub-15
but having suffered for 7 hours I really didn't want to inflict another 8 hours of suffering on myself, so I just tagged on with a guy who was walking it (really fast) and tried to enjoy the rest as much as possible (although still not much) - the intermittent bright moon and the lights of Greater Manchester as you top out Macc Forest were the highlights

Yes. Some similar feelings. I felt trashed the whole time after Edale Cross and could not really figure out why. Shouldbe used to the heat as we'd been abroad? Did I set off tooo fast with Helen? Beat myself up no end and struggled to find enjoyment. Not a fan of so much tarmac and foot trashing rocky trails. Shame you had to retire Helen - you were one of many. Thanks to those who kept me on track when I admitted to no reccees and no idea where I was. Good to chat- hope I didn't whinge too much. Marshalls were great- thanks.Disappointed with my time but at least it was not a dnf. Managed to loose 3kg?

A sub 12 is a serious time on that course weldone don't know ho much weight I lost but had a right good go at getting it back tonght.:thumbup:
Thank you Daz, I am delighted with my time although a little shell shocked as to how I did it. That was only my 3rd BS but the weather was just too hot and made it very difficult. I'm sorry you didn't make your target but anyone who finished did a sterling job in the conditions.
I think it was hottest up to Edale Cross and saw so many struggling from then on. Like you I was relieved when it started to get cooler. I did some fast walking with Geoff P from MD and in fact we were just as quick as my friend who was running ahead
Karen - I spoke to Julie G afterwards and we both said there is too much road in it for our liking. I dread all the road parts at Edale, MD to Chelmorton, and I just dread Walker Barn to the end. When you're tired and knocking your toes down to CC and up to WB it is not funny either.
Not sure I'll do it again right now as I cannot move and sometimes it's best to leave things on a high - think I have very little chance of improvement on that time. Massive well done to anyone who did it, whether they finished or not.
Massive thank you to all the marshalls we had a great motivating banter at each check point. My friend Claire and I were going strong for 42 miles, slowed down a bit at Earl Sterndale as had to navigate a little across the dark moorland, then me feet fell apart, huge blisters on the soles and sides of my feet, the last 7miles were red raw pain!! Finished in 15hr 21mins I think. The views, weather, big skies and a low yellow moon skirting behind us was brilliant. Bit of a hobble now, a good way to start a new job tomorrow!!
Well done to all, what a great day out. The Red Arrows were a highlight, as was the Miller's Dale salty soup, yum.
I got round in 12:29 which I was pleased with given the warm conditions and my failure to have done much long distance work over the summer. Running past my house in Bollington was the toughest bit, with the dread Middlewood way to come, but I'd left my car in HG so thought I might as well finish :).
Very well done to the fast finishers, congrats to all who had a go, finishers or not, and thanks as ever to the brilliant marshalls.
You did brilliantly considering the fact you hadn't done much training for it - I don't know how you just pull it out of the bag but you do :)
I didn't do much proper training for this either and I can really feel the lack of miles and hills in my legs now, I've got some of the worst DOMS I can remember! If I do this one again I'll need to treat it with much more respect.
Well done to everyone too! :) Me and the heat didn't get on too well, and being asthmatic, my pigeon-lungs couldn't cope very well even on the downhill cruises or even talk very well while running :p, so I decided to call it a day at Edale. Some not so nice previous experiences have taught me it's futile fighting it and I'd rather retire while in an state that I can just sit it out and live to run another day, rather than carry on and be a liability to the organisers or other competitors having to get medical assistance.
It was really nice to see and chat to many friends come through Edale, it was amusing to see how long folks were hanging around at the CP, the lure of seats, food and drinks was obviously strong.
Great, well organised event and I've not been put off and I'll be back if it chucks it down, with loads of clag :)
Hmm, a bit of a theme emerging here. I also was a bit nonplussed at how much of a struggle it seemed from quite early on. It's a slight consolation that people as experienced as you and Helen and others went through something similar.Quote:

There seemed to be a lot of suffering, nausea and retirement out there. I didn't think it was that hot but the general concensus seems to be that it was a tough year. I don't feel quite so bad at being 1.5 hours off my 2010 time now. :o
I did my usual trick of setting off too fast, even though it felt perfectly comfortable at the time. By the foot of the climb to Edale Cross I'd blown up and had to watch everyone disappear up the hill as I slowed to 2mph or less. From past experience I knew it was just a matter of time until I found my equilibrium of maximum forward motion with just enough fuel to sustain it without nausea. It worked, sort of. At least I didn't get sick, which is always a blessing.
It was a strangely lonely event this year. Apart from the odd brief encounter and overtaking manoeuvre I ran mostly alone from Castleton. Some cyclists offered some admiring comments as I left the Castleton carpark. "We've just heard what you're doing and we think it's amazing", etc.
I saw the Red Arrows as I approached Wheston (between Peak Forest and Miller's Dale).
The moonrise behind me was spectacular as I approached Dowel Dale. I finally had to switch on my headtorch on the climb towards Brand Top as I caught up with a female runner who was wrecked with the dreaded nausea. (Sorry we didn't exchange names but I hope you finished.)
Daz, it seems I got your target time. Who'd a thought?
Thanks as always to the marshals, whose support and food are always welcome. The jam doughnut at Chelmorton and the hot dog at Brand Top are major highlights and fuelling opportunities not to be missed.
I seem to be the only one that missed the red arrows - I was probably too busy staring at my feet feeling sorry for myself :rolleyes:
oh, and I chatted with dutch peaks at the start, but he doesn't seem to be anywhere in the results :confused:
I think I may have run with him on and off in the early stages (at least I do recall a thick accent that I identified as possibly Dutch). He finished with his group shortly after me as I cooled down on the ground outside. The interim results are incomplete though; some of the times are missing.Quote:

All in all, had a fantastic day out, the checkpoints/ marshals were great, loved the soup at millers dale, and the Jolly Beggar is the best navigator!

Your name seems to be present and correct in the results now, dp. That explains a bit of a mystery now I know you finished ahead of me. I couldn't recall overtaking you again and I never saw your dogs until the finish.
I'm sorry for confusing them with my applauding the finishers. I wondered why one dragged herself up from her slumber and came crawling to me, until you told me they are trained to respond to hand claps. Poor, bewildered pooches. Lovely pooches too.

another sorry tale....I knew i would be slow but i really struggled with this- started steady, and really took it easy on the way up to edale cross but suffered really badly from blisters- which don't usually afflict me. Ended up having to walk from Peak forest- descents on the tracks were agony....made it back in 17 hours but had to dig really deep not to dnf- my foot is badly trashed so training for the hm60 is going to be difficult! time for the bike i think! right now its that never again feeling- all that road and track!!!!... I look at right muppet at work too wandering around wearing a slipper (yup its that bad!)
Very similar with me Bogart I rarely blister but I have a couple beauties and my little on left foot looks horrible and the toe nail is nearly 90 degrees out of place with a bit of infection starting I think Ibe borrowed a boot two sizes bigger and am hobbling around site like a Muppet too ironically some of the larger gentlemen are commenting that'll teach me for exercising!!!!
On the disused railway on the run in there was a man shouting encouragement from a bridge. He asked me "Are you coming off here or going on to the next one?"
I didn't realise there was an alternative exit from the railway - I exited at the bridge further along.
Apparently the first exit is a bit quicker.
I know it's sign-posted to somewhere and involves some cobbles but it doesn't stand out to me on the map.
Could someone describe it to me to help me figure it out?
Might make a critical difference next year!
MarkL - Bridge No: 12 on the MW brings you off at the Miner's Arms (it is signposted just after the bridge, on the LH side). You follow Wood Lane West and then take a R down a cobbly track (Wardsend) and then into Hockley to pick up Towers Rd (there is a little cut through along Trafalgar Ave).....I think that's it! I may make it that far next time...
