Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Having not done this before how do the finishing times compare to those for high peak 40?
Also when it says food and water does that mean enough to get through most of the race or can you get away with small bottle and a snickers and then just eat biscuits around the course? Hopefully the latter
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I did 6.43 last year and think my time for HP40 is 7 hours dead.(I had a for me very good run at LToB tho)
They will have plenty of water to give us at CPs. So can top up a bottle then.
I will carry food as I cannot swallow dry biscuits on a run. There may be more/better than that but best not to risk it.
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Cheers Karen, its 6:30 or bust then. I'll find out whether this is highly ambitious or overly conservative later.
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
great to hear that there'll be plenty of familiar faces
Linda - you'll especially like "The Escalator" when you're over half way in and have already done 5 of the 7 big climbs!
Nick - it would be astonishing if I ever finished ahead of you on an ultra - I'm sure you'll find an extra gear if needed...
first-timers - for goodness sake take it easy until Hope - this route will bite you on the backside if you let it (voice of bitter experience :o )
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
This will be my first. No idea how long it'll take me but there's only one way to find out!
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
johnnyb1, from my recollection the food it minimal - biscuits at checkpoints, little or nothing at the finish. :-( Best to take some of your own preferred (savoury?) food plus something sweet in case you crash between checkpoints later on. Snickers is perfect. You'll need a couple of drinks bottles to keep you going by the time you hit the escalator and beyond up onto the edge, especially if it's hot and sunny (which it might not be this year).
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
weather forecast is for cooler/fresher i.e. ideal for me
er... which now means I'll have no excuse for not going sub-8... :w00t:
Nick - hope your calf is OK come Saturday morning - I'm predicting 7:44 for you! ;)
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I turned my ankle last night so can't run the LTB. The organiser can't refund my fee. If anyone wants my entry and can liaise directly with the organiser its yours. I don't know the etiquette with name changes but I'd rather not see a good entry go to waste. DM me for details. Good luck.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
can anybody confirm that the B6049 road in from the Great Hucklow direction is clear now?
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
BBC travel news just says roadworks/water mian and temporary traffic lights? That's the way I was hoping to travel too
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Yes the road from Tideswell / hucklow is clear. The road works are only if you are coming in from the hope valley, but they are not a problem either just a few mins delay due to temp traffic lights
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
What a good event it was today! Weather good, conditions underfoot good, loads of pbs as a result. 70 minutes faster than my only previous run (3 years ago).
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Good to run with you (eventually), it kept me goiing at a good pace in the second half. Great day out in the end. Thanks to all the marshalls.

That's brilliant Andy, very well done! It was my first time and I really enjoyed it, it's a stunning route. It took me a while to get going but I hooked up with some friendly folk and things picked up after that. It was lovely and cool early on but I drank loads and sweated buckets.
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I just want to say many thanks to the marshals for waiting for me. Speed was not in my quiver today. A stunning route route though that turned out to be a 33 mile nature trail. Tadpoles, ants nests, Highland Cattle and glorious changing scenery. Pity about all the gel an bloc shot wrappers I noticed along the route though. Carelessness or deliberate, I don't know but not good regardless.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Great organisation once again, apparent that the D&W (who I love!) still have an input, but Bradda Dads are great too! A little disappointing to see that all the 'hanging out of trees over rivers' controls got tried to a fence post - they were fun! I'm not a fast runner, but used to gain places on the route from small nav misfortunes :)
I've not raced solo for 11 months, LToB ALWAYS brings me back :)
Had a few issues with bogey runners - one guy said to me through Castleton that he was glad he was following the right person (me) - got told I would not tolerate being trailed and to feck off. He got lost and finished behind me. I perhaps may have been a little more compassionate if he'd had his map out thumping it, and not been so brazen!
I got people waiting for me at styles....it happens alot and really pisses me off. Glad to see 75% of the bogeys go wrong! I had to actually say on many occasions (as thouse tied there shoes laces at path junctions if they were waiting for me ...more expletives....not a happy bunny!
I stopped racing for a bit as this happened often, it spoils MY race, that I have either spent the time recci'ng, or I god forbid I have actually learnt to nav though experience!
If you think you can wing it round a route by following, just really do bugger off! I only get to run outside once a week, don't spoil my fun, especially when you run past me once I've guided you through the route!
Humphf!
hitthenorth, I saw loads too :(

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I know what you mean Helen, had this happen a few weeks ago on a race, those around me would have missed a self clip and got lost numerous times if they hadn't followed me. Very annoying as they had simply downloaded the route onto their watches and were relying on that completely, I might go down your route of telling them where to go (no pun intended, but actually quite a good one!) next time rather than just stewing over it and chunnering to myself.
Sounds like a great event, may give it a go next year.
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Can understand why you're so peed off Helen.Although I only did the 1/2,I had no-one near me the whole race,so was glad I had reccied it.Nevertheless,it was pretty straightforward,so I'm surprised anyone with any nav skills couldn't get themselves round without blindly following.Mind you,a lost soul from the Long did try to follow me after going wrong quite early on,but he soon dropped off,so am not sure what happened to him.
Found it a great event.Couldn't fault the cost,the organisation,the route,the check point folk,the venue,etc..
Hopefully, next year there won't be a clash with the English Champs, which I think may've affected the 1/2 especially.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Helen I thought I was competitive but I do feel compelled to call people back on route if I see them going wrong. Someone overtook me just before the secret trods up through the bracken past the top of the woods and carried on ahead, missing the right turn-off. I called him back and our paths intercepted in the undergrowth. I didn't hear a word of thanks from him - not even a response when I spoke to him; downright ungrateful and just plain rude is what I call it. I might follow your example in future.
Pictures just uploaded.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I was supporting a friend yesterday with his wife and we were really impressed with the organisation and the friendliness of BraddaDads. Helen, we saw you at Burbage North, the bridge by the river and at the end. Loved your description of how you felt :). You mentioned your annoyance there too of those tagging on. I'd be really mad too and would give the response you did . Mind you the only one I'd have following me is the sweep up chap! I've set a goal to do the half tour next year  Great day, well done to all. I've bought the map and ill be out on with it and my compass many times before next year.
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Gosh! I wasn't expecting that response, I thought I'd be getting a flaming for being a cantankerous old cow! ;)
It is certainly is annoying...but saying that, I have made numerous friends though navo's on the ultras - mostly those who have had map in hand and said 'I know I am here, I think this way is next'...there is a huge difference..they know who they are :) I've also made friends with people who are just totally crap at navving, but at least they admit it!
I just think its very silly - I often say 'do you know where you are on the map' ...as my offer to help, met with a blank face...not only are participants putting themselves at risk, but it also puts the race organisers at risk too, and in turn fecks up racing for the rest of us. If you can't work out where you are, how the feck can you tell the emergency services where you or a fellow runner is in the case of emergency? Ultras take us waaay out from race support.
I do call people back too - I always will - sometimes people go the wrong way not through numptiness, but through disorientation through lack of fueling or dehydration. It's the blatent piss taking that riles me.
I should hasten to add, I am not the best navigator either, but I start every race with the intention that I will need to use my map and compass if I need to. I've had some interesting experiences!!
gazb - exactly, it's not hard to nav, it's a tough route, but more trail/tracks than fell.
Lol, Racethesweeper, it was the same description as last year ;) Apologies fro my not very ladylike wording!
Dispite all that, LToB is just a fantastic event, bring back having to swing off the river bank from a tree to get the dibber under the bridge and I will be a happy lady!
Anyway...mountain marathons have become my thing now, I get lost loads :p
-
Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I'm certainly glad I reccied the bit from Upper Burbidge down to Bole Hill (CH 13?) - I would've got hopelessly lost in the maze of Bracken!
Here's a link to a video I made of the run:

A BIG thank you to all the volunteers for organising such a great event. It was my first time and will hopefully be back next year :-)
Cheers,
James

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
I'm glad I kept my lack of navigation to myself when I was running with you. Its one thing to keep people within sight / be very pleased when you spot them as you know you haven't gone wrong, I just don't tell people when I'm running with them.
Not done it before and found the running tough, gave up on the idea of racing as I knew I wouldn't have found the druid stone checkpoint without following other people so I was happy to let people run away from me, plus I felt terrible between stanage edge and CP15 so was resigned to just finishing and stopping running as soon as possible.
James that video is great, was good to talk to you for the 1st few miles.

The problem is events like this can attract marathon runners who have shocking standards. They expect to drop stuff and have others pick it up. I have ranted at a few for dropping drinks sachets and wrappers on such as LDWA's before, who met me with mindless stares. One argued the toss and told me to mind my own f*** business ( on the old defunct 3 towers race) I said - keeping the countryside clean IS everyones business, including yours, and I will bet it made no difference at all . Thankfully Fell races by and large, don't seem to have the problems that trail races do with mindless idiots dropping stuff, since they are people who appreciate the countryside.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Great video there James. Thanks for taking the time to edit and post it. Usually the LToB clashes with Teggs, so I am busy. It didn't this year, but still couldn't make it...Maybe next year...looks a lovely route.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
First time on LTOB and enjoyed it immensely. Good weather and conditions and superb marshaling. Lost my Map and instructions on checkpoint 7....:-( Too bothered about filling my bottle and stuffing my face. I then only had my little garmin gecko for NAV which only directs as the crow flies. I didnt know the course after burbage north and missed checkpoint 14 and had to track back half mile for it :-(. Still, very happy with 6:19 and reckon the error cost me 15 mins. I'll be back next year if it doesn't clash:thumbup:

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Many Thanks to the RO/CP marshals etc for another superb event.
no excuses for me - ended up clocking a time that was 25 seconds slower than last year - 8:25:13 cf 8:24:48 - how's that for consistency?!
I just had a bit of a "bad day" performance-wise - legs felt "wooden"/uncooperative - so didn't go quite as well as hoped, but still enjoyed it nonetheless in the perfect conditions
I was a bit disappointed with all the extra orange arrows/tape - thought it altered the character of the event a bit too much - can't imagine how anyone managed to go wrong tbh

Thanks bud, Were you wearing the bandana and with karen Nash when i had to track back to 14?

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Thanks to all, especially Nick Ham and the rest of our little gang for guiding me round (I'm one of the really bad navigators/followers mentioned:o. I will improve my etiquette next time.), helping to maintain my pace and mostly just for their excellent company. Hope to see you all again.

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
JanSoLo Yes that was Splatcher(Andy) and I. You were clearly faster than us so shame about your map. Guess that was also why you and graham went wrong after the Burbage road crossing. You had less to climb back upto the control that the guy we met down on the railway line tho- shame he was so nippy or we could have called him back. I tried to keep up with you up the lane from Abney and sort of managed it to the stile into the fields and then lost you on the descent- although only a minute behind in the end so not too bad.

Yeah, it was the only bit of the route i hadn't reccyed and probably the only bit i should have lol,. The instructions were the main loss here..... not to worry i'll be back next year trying to break 6.... i was left to rely on my garmin gecko and once i got into the woods it lost signal. When it regained it the arrow said checkpoint 14 was .25 miles behind me....Doh!! :-)...a great run by you and saw you coming back in the field. I got a glance of another runner in front tho and wanted to chase him down (jon pemberton i think). I caught him about 800 meteres from the finish as he was cramping..

Great video, I kind of noticed that thing strapped to your head before the climb up to Hollins Cross and wondered what it was - glad I acted on my instincts and let you pass, no one wants to see a backside like a bag of ferrets ;)
It must have been uncomfortable to carry?

Re: Long Tour of Bradwell
Interesting points on following and being followed Helen !
I share a similar but slightly more forgiving view. It's a race and the idea is to get round as fast as possible. I will happily follow guys if I can keep up (with my map in hand!) or call anyone back if I know the route, but similarly I don't mind people trailing me. Normally the only downside to trailing me is at some point you'll need to have a good chin wag whether they're able to or not !
I think it all comes down to manners out on the trails...
Manners with Litter. I can't believe there were lots dropped - I never saw any. Perhaps this should be more rigorously stipulated in the race notes along with not crossing fences etc.
Manners with thanking others for guiding them through tricky bits.
Manners with thanking checkpoint marshalls
Manners with saying thanks when pedestrians step aside.
and in my opinion...
Manners in not telling others to feck off !!! (but thats just me)
Fantastic race in probably ideal conditions - I've never sweated so much though. 3 mins faster than last year. Always very tough though, but love it.
Bring on some really bad weather though please next year - I don't like this heat!

great video. Did I notice you took the direct route from upper Burbage, rather than the easy track under Burbage edge? Respect for that. Not many that passed us at the check point went that way.

Alan, I couldn't agree more.
I was wondering about such etiquette...I did the Calderdale Hike, knowing that I did not know the route, but had a map marked up (and the capacity to use it).
I fell in with a couple of other runners along the way, and was quite honest in that I declared my ignorance of the area, but that was well able to navigate my way around if needed. No-one seemed to mind, and if the boot was on the other foot, I would gladly guide someone around.
But we are a broad church... each to their own.
As for litter, it makes my blood boil!
