recced leg 4 today,was very firm underfoot due to ground being frozen,lets hope it's like that on the day,because it has the potential to be a mudbath

Recce-ing leg 6 tomorrow a.m; should be nice and frosty at 8 in the morning.

Not hugely looking forward to it actually; looking at the map i reckon there's as much tarmac and trail as there is fell. I'm going to wear my half-worn mudroc290s and see how they do but i may look at using trail shoes instead, as long as it stays frosty on the day.

Tend to think the whole thing (with the possible exception of Leg 4 and a bit of Leg 2) is really a trail race.
Recced leg 5 today. Deep, deep, mud in places. Very slippy ice covered stone sets in others. Lots of stiles.
Spent 30 mins in the company of some passing motorists, looking for a injured dog that had limped off at a pace after being run over in Holmfield. Hope it's ok.
RSPCA and Police informed.

we were out on leg 5 today,there and back
brrrr... got even colder as day progressed.
as duff states muddy and also muddy,with a bit of mud for good measure.

recce leg 6 there and back next week

Getting tricky now.

a) I think is leg 6 after the canal near Brighouse

b) is sneaky because it shows leg 3 before Blackshaw Head but the race takes the road, not the official CW as indicated by green diamonds

e) is leg 4 after Blackshaw Head before crossing Colden Water

f) must be leg 5 somewhere

I have run legs 1 and 2 so I should know which is which between c) & d) but I'm not sure. Think d) is leg 2 after the stables which makes c) leg 1 but I can't work out where.

a) here you're running due west on leg 6 after the canal, climing up through the woods. The track forks here, and those who haven't reccied will be tempted to carry straight on, rather than keeping left next to the wall.

b) at the end of on leg 3, you run along the road instead of using the CW, which uses a narrow slippery path round the back of the farms at Barley Croft.

c) is on leg 1, the last bit of road, 1km before the end.

d) shows the infamous stables on leg 2, through which you must "WALK!" or be penalised with a 5 minute penalty (see the horseshoe symbol).

e) is near the beginning of leg 4. The north/south bit coincides with a section towards the end of leg 2 of the Pennine Bridleway Relay, albeit the other way round.

f) is on leg 5 and is one of the more industrialised road sections used to string the Calderdale Way together.

Question: As mentioned in e) above, CWR Leg 4 crosses PBWR Leg 2. These relays cross at two further points. Where are these, and which legs are involved?

I can only think of one other section :( where they run concurrently for about 1km - from the west end of London Road at Mankinholes to west of Lumbutts. Leg 2 CWR and leg 3 PBR

Yes, almost a trick question. CWR Leg 2 and PBWR Leg 3 run into each other twice, at Mankinholes and Lumbutts.

Can anyone verify the route from the start. The map above shows it following the path at the top of the wood and escarpment on a very narrow path. In previous years it followed paths through the woods from Clay House to GR080224 below the escarpment.

Please don't assume the route on the above map is correct. In the absence of any official guidance I have simply highlighted the Calderdale Way. I expect the relay route will be signposted and marshalled if it differs from this.

Having dutifully reccied leg 5, I've now been switched to leg 6.
Any advice on footwear?

Have found out at Radcliffe AC are not taking part as we are first reserve :( so unless you know of a team not turning up, we all can have a lie in!

Vince, try Middleton - they put in 2 teams but normally struggle to fill the 2nd, John Cox may know.

looked over leg 1 on a very cold sunday,unsure about first mile,sure they tape it.the last 3rd of the leg is tough.
went over leg6 yesterday,really difficult what footwear to recomend as quite a bit of tarmac/hard surface running aswell as a sloppy section.the run in from southaram on the road is horrid,all road,suit the speed merchants.

where do you find where the routes go please.

The Calderdale Way is rather well known. Marked on the OS map, or you could visit Horwich website for a break down of each leg.
