err.....ooooh! maybe definitely Dom (any confirmation on this one DOM??)
Looks as though the clag is coing to be down around 1500-2000 feet which means a lot of the route will be in clag.
Unless someone in the group knows the way of scafell pike, I suggest you back track the broad crag col before coming down: it is a tad slower, but less danger of walking over a 1000 foot vertical drop - and from green gable keep the fence line to brandreth in sight - go just far enough left of it to find a good grassy running line - then straight N when you reach the col between the two tops of grey knotts, you will find a trod high up, and good running further down.
Wont be joining you. Back knackered from a BG rec on thurs.
stop panicking
navigation is my middle name
how hard can it be
just look for the one with the pointy top and bingo
good grief
Have fun you lot, I'm jealous at all ;)
Have a super duper day guys
Blimey! Furthest drive back and first one to post!
What a fantastic day out. Weather held out for us but got a bit claggy in places. Could whoever swapped my legs for two that don't work please let me have my own legs back!

More to follow....
Wow, thanks for the piccy Dom, and particular thanks to Huw and Paul for guiding us round. Who's going to post about mislaying one of our number?
What a top day out.
Thanks to everyone - I just enjoyed the whole day.
Huwski's leg was better than my two!!!
Shame you couldn't make it ....
what a top recce
reat company and good banter going round
yep i think i was first to reach swoop and therefore should have master member and rescuer on my name, beat that JJ , come on brettsort it pleeease
didnt take to long for colin to come down the scree though after id found him with huw.
funny though , what guided us down was emmilou laughing out loud , she looked a bit shocked when me and colin arrived , at first i thought she was laughing about me having to fetch colin but then realised it wasnt, she had gone a bit red mind so im not sure what had set her off:rolleyes:
perhaps she had caught a glimpse of something long and pointy , gable
theres a couple of route choices i need to clarify
have to go and fetch the map
I have PDF image (5Mb) or GPX file of the route we took yesterday if anyone wants a copy. PM me with e-mail address if you do.
Thanks for a great day out. I really enjoyed it. Now I have to decide whether I will do the real one.
Will twig make a further post on this thread? He is trying to keep his post count below 10.
He will, I'll be on his case :D
Great day out, thanks to all for smashing company.
Especially Huwski and cooperman for the various route choices and navigation!!
I can still manoeuvre around the house this morning so thats a big positive:D
I can name them all - but figure some may want their identities protecting?!! - do I still get a pint??:D
Thanks for the photo Dom! I couldn't have posted if I wanted to - Hubbie ran me a bath and handed me a glass of wine I had a hot soak, collapsed on the bed and that was it until 4am this morning when the children decided it was time to get up:eek: worst thing was I didn't even drink all the wine:mad:
[quote=Marvin;47167] particular thanks to Huw and Paul for guiding us round.[quote]
Ditto - thanks you two! GOd knows i'd still be there in that clag! Thanks for waiting too!
still sniggering!! Although sunnyside and Twig didn't help matters!!
Perleeese do it! We can tie a long rope and follow each other! I'm SO worried I'm not going to make the cut off
Do you think if I put an appeal out for a guide on the day to get me round it will be against race rules? well it works fr the BGR's
By coincidence I was out with a mate doing the route starting from the Youth Hostel at Borrowdale. We skipped out the Scafell section, coming down from Esk Hause to Styhead Tarn. Obviously shorter, but quite a nice run nontheless.
Marvin, I've pm'd you for a copy of the route you took.
Coming off Gable in clag was tricky - I'm told there's a fast route off that meets the path lower down to Windy Gap?
Aparently one goes over the tops of Brandreth and then cuts left of Grey Knotts, NOT skirting way to the left around Brandreth?
Any other tips? I spent ages scrolling through all the pages on this thread to find it was mostly about meeting up for the reccie and not about shortcuts etc.!!!
('ll go around again perhaps on Tuesday coming if by any freak chance anyone was around and interested; leaving early morning.)
one question about the route , well no ive others
i know me and andy was trying to work out why the race route from brandreth takes you left over the stile and arcs round then down to honister.
we seemed to just follow the fence with it on our left cross the end stile at grey knotts, sharp right then just plunder on down to honister.
what does the race route save ??????
hang on just realised then do some people go via moses trod and keep to the left of brandreth, is this any quicker ???????
also being a runner that always looks for a short cut i tried a more direct route coming down the end of the corridor route, hang a left down a grassy gully and you can be over towards the bottom of gable quicker , huw mentioned he thought that some of the runners try this , i think i went to low but if you get it right im sure it could save a bit, you really are just missing out a little gully that you have to cross before the last run in down to styhead
Well done eveyone yesterday (Had to head off rather sharpish at end)! A great day out (7 hours counts as a day in my book). Special thanks to Emmilou and Huwski (plus Paul - I think it was Paul - Huwski's mate and navigational wizard).
Best bit of running defintely the descent from Dale Tarn - although the bit between Green Gable and Honister was a close contender.
I reckon the trickiest bits navigationally are choosing the best line off Bessie Boot until Allen Crags (defintely skirt round there) and then making sure you head off Great Gable and join up with path.
See you all in August (Am convincing myself that cut off will not be a problem once take out picnic stops/route tips/rescue missions etc.).
What a grand day out. A fantastic round, lots of the views keep popping back into my mind, magical. Thank's to Emm for organising it and to Huw and his mate Paul for navigation. Hope to see everyone again at the race and will have to work on a pass for the evening too, sounds like a good party.
Will definately take the scree route off Scafell, what a laugh.
Looking forward to the rest of the photos Dom.
Who was the forumite we bumped into on Scafell pacing a BG??
Errr there is and I was stupid enough to look for it yesterday.
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/h.price7/borrowdale/ ) gable.jpg shows two routes, thick red line was quick route I did in May, thin one yesterday's 'alternative'!!!!
AlwaysInjured - Thanks for asking, leg was fine thanks, what an amazing physio Duncan is.
Daz H - I nearly always take Moses trod route, lot more running but no climbing. (Takes me 30mins Gable=> Honister)...However......I am getting to like the route we took yesterday.
Was great to see everyone yesterday. And what a coincidence!!! There I was spending 10secs on Gable summit putting my jacket on, ready to head off again....and out of the mist appears a genie. At least that's what I thought it was....then I realised it was Huwski!!:D
Thanks for an enjoyable little trot down to Honister finding some devious grassy trods! And what an enjoyable little climb up to Dale Head.
And look...I got on the photos!! I gatecrash the party and I still get on the photos!!!:D
