Meet after 07:30 in the lane near the school for an 08:00 drive up to the carpark at Fleet Moss (SD 860 838). Bank on it taking a good 8 hours - could be more, less would be a bonus cos I need to get across to the Lake District ready for the L100 recce on Sunday. That section took me 8:18 excluding grouping time the last time I did it in 2007. It would be interesting to see how long a recce takes on fresh legs in daylight. Depends how many notes people want to make ;)
Take plenty of food and drink for a long day. Marmite sandwiches for me :D
Hi Duracell, where and when are you setting off?
Hey good news! I just got my fellsman manual. Really impressed with the attrition rate on drop outs :). 299 starters last year with only 177 finishing! 1964 looks the worst - 21 finishers out of 195 starters :D
We're setting of from Fleet moss at about 9.15 to go across to Yarnbury-but a bit quicker than you,re planning. Britnick -you know me as marmite man
Also got my handbook -that's whernside on the front is'nt it ? The caption has it as Ingleborough !
Hey Marmite Man! It's great to know who I'm chatting with. I've just made my Marmite and cucumber rolls for the weekend - all six of them. :D
We've got to drive up to Fleet Moss at 8, so we could be setting off at almost the same time as you. I've got my booklet as well. I think you could be right about Whernside.
Weather forecast is predicting a damp start. You would never think it looking outside now. It should clear up quickly though.
Stolly, I'm amazed at the number of people who don't even make it to the start.
Thanks everybody for the recce last Saturday. It was good to eventually end up as a 'sevensome' with Duracell's group. I might have done the event four times but nothing beats actually seeing it in daylight. I learned a lot. The grotty weather was a bit slower than forecast to clear through but it was so worthwhile doing this.
Sorry you had to wait for me at the bottom of Great Whernside. I am the proud owner of a leg trophy from when I fell down a hole between the rocks on the summit after our little food break. I'm telling everyone I got mauled by a Grizzly :D
I too was mildly irritated by the front cover being labelled Ingleborough :D
Having finally sat down and read my fellsman manual, I have a few equipment questions as some of the toot we're expected to carry seems a bit odd. Fell shoes sound fine as footwear although I better remember to clean mine as it says they must be in 'first class condition'
On the clothing front it seems I must carry running tights and waterproof leggings (as well as wearing shorts) - is this the case? It then says 'a thick long sleeved sweater or two thin long sleeved sweaters or a fleece' - what the heck do I carry then? If its hot I'll probably run in a vest or T shirt and I was going to carry two long sleeved running tops (not sweaters) too - will that be okay?
It asks me to carry a torch with spare batteries and bulb. It also says single LED torches are not acceptable. I have a petzl myoxp headtorch - surely thats okay or is it single LED?
I have no idea what a 'silva' type compass is but my compass works and is a relatively good one.
300g of emergency food not to be eaten unless in an emergency. Any tips of what to actually carry for this. On the food and drink front, I was going to carry just one water bottle given that there are so many refreshment stops. Do I need to carry much in the way of (non-emergency) snacks?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Single LED headtorches didn't use to be accepted but were certainly accepted last year.
300g chocolate doesn't take up much space in your bag.
The long tights are for the night stage, one of the rules is that you must wear long trousers in the hours of darkness. I usually just take either two long sleeve running tops or a thicker mid layer depending on conditions, so you should be fine with your kit.
The torch question is a good one, are the LED bulbs in the myo xp changeable, if so then okay with a spare I would guess. If not then I would maybe just clarify with an email to the organisers I am sure it would be acceptable.
By a silva type compass they mean a base plate compass with degrees on the bezel, I think rather than a sighting compass or a thumb compass. So I'm sure you are fine
Emergency food I usually just selotape a few mars bars together enough to weigh 300g not real science to it. You'll be fine with one water bottle, there are plenty of stops to fill up. I usually take some food to supplement refreshment stops, jelly babies and some muesli bars just to eat on the move, but its personal taste really whatever you feel you can eat on the move. You won't need loads but something just to give you a boost.
I know the rules seem a little OTT but the event is run by the scouts and this is typical of scout events, they are catering for a wide range of abilities and exerience so it covers all bases. The majority of the field will be walkers as well so they will not be moving as fast. Any more quiestions I'll be glad to help.
:)
I used a myo last year and it passed muster. My emergency food is marzipan. it's very heavy so packs small and has a very high calorific content.
It's worth carrying extra food for your self esp for the last 15 miles when you really need it esp with going on through the night that may be very cold and wet.
It's worth taking an extra 5 minutes at the CP for night/grouping to eat extra food and shove some in your pack. you will benefit from this in the wee hours
Thanks for the tips guys. Much appreciated.
what do people do about maps, ie, use full map or photocopy/laminate sections and keep full map tucked away. thgt it may be easier to have a4 size maps rather than messing around with full size maps?? dave
I've got the Harvey Dales South and Dales West maps - they're ideal in that they're quite compact, they are in their own plastic wallets, are waterproof and show all of the details quite well, although they are only 1:40,000 scale.
They are also works of art and just beautiful to look at...... although I doubt I'll appreciate that too much yomping round the fellsman :D
What about the new(ish) BMC map for the Dales? It's based on Harvey's mapping. I have one at home but I'm fairly sure it covers all of the Fellsman course. I doubt that you'd get a series of waterproof printoffs at the same weight.
Maybe check with the organisers?

Looking at this I think it does. I have previously used the two harveys maps although I quite like the idea of having the rout on A4 sheets as well just for ease of use and leave the full map in my bag. To be honest I don't really use the map much till after the road crossing at Redshaw as the route finding is relatively straight forward till here, but a few sheets showing the route from here might be easier to use than a full map sheet. Harveys maps are plenty clear enough though for the route.:)

ive got this one, although it misses out kingsdale-gragareth and a bit to dent i think (im at work so not sure, same with spelling). i was going to use the harveys and a OS for the bit that the harveys doesnt cover, but had wondered about copying to save messing around folding and unfolding etc, obviously id keep original copies in sac, but is it just extra weight?
I was reading my handbook last night and I wondered should we have a forum team ? You only have to enter your team on the morning of the race and then you are eligible for the team trophy. Anybody any thoughts ? And a team name ? Just a thought
Also what's your numbers ? I am running as 123 would be good to meet a few other faces at the start for a brew.:)
I don't think you need to run together, your finishing times just count towards the trophy, it'll probably be won my macclesfield harriers as previous years or team vasque but its only a bit of fun, maybe if we get everyone together at the start we can put a couple or three teams together of similar ability. I am aiming for sub 15hrs this year hopefully.
Is everyone going to Threshfield first and having the breakfast? Originally I didn't intend to, living so near to Ingleton, but now I'm thinking I will. Getting my wife to pick me up from Threshfield could've been a problem anyway, as I will have inevitably 'wasted another damn weekend' running the fellsman :D, so driving there will give me the necessary transportation home.
Are you running with Mrs C merry? You two and Stolly could make perhaps up a Fell Pony team ;)
kit question. ive read the official info and obviously comply. im interested in what previous runners have carried, for example, how much extra food, above the emergency rations, how many tops etc. any advice would be much appreciated. dave
I cannot make the event this year and i have a trophy for the first novice (??) to return. If there anyone living in the Penrith/Keswick area who can take it to the race for me? Or is anyone going to Lords Seat fell race (29th april) who can take it to the race for me?
I hope you all enjoy the race this year and it is not as hot as last year
Hi Steve
I'd be happy to return it for you Steve. I'm based in Greystoke and drive through Threlkeld several times a week. Please PM me if you want me to collect the trophy from you
Mark
Hi all,
is anyone from Surrey/London/the south east doing the Fellsman who fancies sharing transport? I really don't want to drive all the way back on my own on the Sunday! Happy to take my car or help you drive yours...
cheers,
caroline
Caroline if inevitably you end up driving back on your own, make sure you have a kip first and stop for cat naps on the way from time to time. When I'd finished the High Peak Marathon (a 'mere' 43 miles) I only had 85 odd miles to travel home but I must have stopped half a dozen times. Just sitting in the car too didn't help, given that my muscles seized up somewhat too.
for the 300 g of emrgency food, what have people taken in past, usually id take flapjack/chocolate or something, but hopefully i wont need it and will stay in my sac, any suggestions? cheers dave
cheers ian, good idea
Under RULE 6 a) runners will be disqualified for 'receiving assistance of any kind inc food, drink' etc. Is this ruling strictly enforced? I'm injured but plan to follow the route round to 'support' people taking part (obviously including forumites :)) but don't want to do anything to cause anyone to be stopped
