Roads up to Austwick were good this morning. I parked up at the bottom of town head and set off on an 11.5 mile clockwise loop taking in Ingleborough. There was a considerable amount of snow on Thwaite Lane with drifts covering the top of the dry stone walls. The slog up long lane was made harder by the ice and snow and as the lane climbed, the visibility reduced and snow thickness increased. The gate at the head of the lane had a snow drift over it so you simply walked over the gate as opposed to through it. I prefer skirting round and above Trow Gill rather than going through it and it is the lesser used route. My line took me down and up through calf/knee deep virgin snow. Any signs of the path were buried and it seemed nobody had been this way since the last snow fall. As I continued, the visibility dropped to around 150 yards but I could just make out the left hand rocky top of the gill on my left which kept me on the right line. I eventually hit the double stiles at head of the Trow Gill path that take you over the wall (snow drift) onto the moor beneath Ingleborough. By this point, the visibility was probably 50 yards and I was following a handfull of deep footprints in the general direction of the hill that I pressumed was still there. I did not have my compass to follow a bearing so when the deep snow seemed to end along with the prints, and the 360 degree view was just complete white, I made the decision to back track. I have been up there many times and today was very hostile, totally different from back in the village. A drop in altitude of just a few feet and the visibility started to come back and I returned via the nature trail and Clapham village. Lunch at Feizor and feet up in front of the wood burner now.
Hi paul
yes but don't rush, Conditions on the two other runs have been snowing foggy and heavy underfoot.;) Do not use road shoes as bits of the course have seen no plough, gritter or any vehical for two weeks. Although the top road is stunning running between plough drifts
Went up Cut Gate today in Skis the story is here
7 miles today - 2 easy this morning and then five just now. Need more sleeeep :(. These were all done on the road, bah.
with the easing weather I thought I'd try the road tonight and am regretting it. Was with dog so not the bussiest roads, but didnt expect the slippy, sleety, skiddy mush that materialised, nor the morons who are given driving licences round here. Ah well that will teach me, stick to fells boy!
Getting regular again though so pleased. Aiming for a half m in mid feb so need some fast road miles though.
Jason
Interval run on the road with the dog. Easing my legs back into running quite nicely and looking forward to longer distances and more off road work. Wore my trail shoes to cope with the snow, but wish I'd worn my more supportive road shoes TBH.
:)
7 mile road run to Job Centre Plus in Halifax, singlespeed crosser out tomorrow for first time in a month to sign on, full time athlete for now:rolleyes:
