which means along the wall until the piles of stones and then a neat bearing into the middle and you find the track.....
You're correct that much of that land is open access re: CRoW - which means unless there is a specific condition (usually temporary i.e. bird nesting) you don't have to stick to paths; however: CRoW states that access is open only for non commercial activities; so technically anyone being paid to say guide clients on walks, or instructors running activities, should get the permission of the landowners to go over the land even if it's CRoW.
Races, being commercial (whether for profit or not) have to get permission. I suspect that many of the landowners will have some proviso over use of their land about competitors not training on it! They like to still rattle their sabres... If there are any cavers on this forum they'll understand fully the bizarre situation they face about access to caves on CRoW.
How a landowner would know you're a Fellsman training up there or any other runner exercising their right to open access, is anyone's guess - unless you told them!
The organisers will have to include it in the rules and regs. Probably a can of worms best left with the lid on.

So, this quad bike track...
from the trig on Middle Tongue, where do you go? As I recall, it's a fence up there, not a wall; although I'm the first to admit I could be wrong about that, my memory is a bit hazy and I've not been up there for a while.
There's both. The wall and the ground below it (to the south) give better terrain under foot. The fence, and the quad bike track(s) are more direct but you need to get the line right. Last year you could see the orange marshall's tent from about two miles off - if you were looking in the right place! If it's very wet, or in bad viz then it might not be worth the candle and you'll end up sapping yourself in the bog for the sake of avoiding half a mile round the edge.
If you find my sanity out there on the Middle Tongue, can you post it back to me?
Oh, the quad bike tracks are quite obvious on Google Earth. An evening in front of the laptop with a glass of wine is in order!
I remember following the southern wall all the way round to a blue cup tied on a post, over that and a rough bearing to the trig, then basically up and downing through peat hags for quite a way, keeping roughly parallel to a wire fence heading due westish. From what I understand now, after the trig is a quad bike track which I will be able to see from my vantage point high up on google earth. Well, me and a couple of bottles of Black Sheep, perhaps. Ta for that, I'll have a gander...
pb - have sent a pm just in case the back sheep are not working
Cheers Saz, most helpful. (in my above post I said westish...should've been eastish...schoolboy error!)
had a run over Fleet Moss yesterday to Middle Tongue, went the direct route following the old fence line which was supprisingly dry hope it stays that way ...
I have just been reading through the previous threads and spotted an idea Donkarlo had a few years ago :
Does anyone want to make up a 'forum team'? We'd just need to fill in the form on the morning and romp/wobble to a podium finish!
