Whenever I moaned about my bike as a youngster people used to tell me Hinault raced on his baker boy's delivery bike and still won.

Good news Hann, reckon a gentle bit of cycling will be on the cards soon, anyway, that should sort out the floaters and a do a bit of automenisectomy at the same time:wink:
Ratters, shame about the porridge incident, better luck next week.
Managed to keep my porridge down and did a solid 50 miles this morning in fairly dank conditions and with skanky greasy roads with all the leaf mulch lurking around. Col du Roc Blanc and Bryn Ddu (twice:eek:) kept me honest, but feeling good and strong at the moment:thumbup: Trouble is, with all that gunk on the roads the bike needs a clean, better get that sorted soon otherwise I will have Daz on my case, new chain and all:o
Thanks Toff, do you reckon I should just ride through the pain, assuming that I will grind the debris to a pulp that gets absorbed or moved away by the body?
I had some stuff floating around in that knee when I was about 15... and it eventually went away all by itself...
Hmmm, haven't seen your knee and you don't want to listen to me as I ran down the Ben with a broken fibula but...........
If you have not had an acute recent meniscus tearing injury and there's just bits of stuff floating around in your knee from general wear and tear and they are not big enough to cause your knee to lock then gentle mobilisation with cycling would be good and you could progress as you feel able and as the swelling subsides. If your knee is very swollen and there you have recently torn a meniscus then you will have to be more circumspect and be guided by pain. Does that cover the bases???
Hann you shouldn't just ride through the pain. You need to see a specialist. You could end up making it worse. See your gp or go and see a decent sports injury specialist. Someone at ajax will know somebody.
As for me
17 miles then a double spin session with 12 miles between the sessions. 8 miles home and a bloody puncture. Walked the last 2 miles. Bloody hands frozen again, but a good session.
A few miles round Isle of Skye earlier...

:w00t:
It does...
It isn't swollen, highly unlikely it is a meniscus tear... However, the crepitus is horrendous! It squeeks and sueels, well actually it clonks like mad when I bend and extend the knee joint... Tried a few minutes on the rollers while setting them up yesterday, then when I went upstairs to put my cycling kit on the knee hurt again, so decided against it...
I am seeing the GP later on in the hope I get referred to a specialist, but knowing the NHS it is going to be more like: do absolutely f-all for two months, then come back... Then they will send me for an x-ray, knowing that that won't show up anything... then they will send me for 6 weeks of physio for which I need to wait 2 months... You get my gist? The NHS is f-ing useless...
I want an arthroscopy to see what is happening inside that knee, then clean it up if need be... so I will be good to go again next season!
Well, back from the gp. This new addition to the practice is excellent and understands the needs of a sporty 'patient'... I have been referred to orthpaedics for an arthroscopy... She thinks a cleaning up of the knee cartilege is in order and with a bit of luck all should be done and dusted and recovered by the end of the year, so I can start riding and training again in January so I can still have a racing season next year, with a bit of luck!
nice one hanneke - hope it works out! :)
I hope so too... need to make sure I get the right surgeon to do the job apparently, as that can make a difference between a doddle and a nightmare...
Sounds like hardship Erno ;)
65.30 this morning for 3 laps of Richmond Park - getting quicker!
Excellent Zoot!
I made it as far as putting the bike in the car, drive to the station to pick up my friend, put his bike in my car, drive into town and streight into Caffe Nero for 3 large lattes... as it was/is chucking it down here and only just above freezing!
On a positive note: I am shaking with caffeine overdose and the knee feels much better than yesterday, after yesterday afternoons ride :)
Toff, think you are right :)
Yaay! Finally got out on the bike with a double dip lurgy and a recovering ankle for company. Short thrash up the Kymin. At the top felt like I was 1 2 after running the 800 metres!
58 miles into the peak district, bolehill and a few other climbs. Back down the a6 then across to little eaton and over drum hill past the scout camp. Roads very greasy but not too bad. One or two others out which was good. Last climb up to the cat and fiddle windmill and just as I'm topping out matey boy is playing in his helicopter on his land. The windmill is looking sad , it's sails have fell off. Hann can you bring some over next time your in holland.
Lattes. Eh wah.
Remember to just ease back on your tyre pressure in these conditions. They will grip better. No need for 120psi this time of year.
today i was riding 30psi
round myrtle park in sunny bingley
when i say riding i mean carrying my bike :)
only two crashes really - 1 a muddy downhill corner, the other a gone worng dismount! by the last few laps my pedals were so muddy i couldn't get my feet back in, so had to balance on top.
i came 72 out of 81, 6th woman out of 7 - think i'll go round saying 6th lady - sounds impressive :) :)
6th lady Ratfink, that is what I'd stick to... and casually mention the total number of competitors too ;)
WELL DONE! Sounds like you had a great race and you didn't come last! :D
I went to the track, and took it easy... Two reasons: my knee, I was very anxious for it to lock up again, but it didn't... and it was an improvers session that a few of us had joined. The standard of riding was lethal!!!!! Steve, my mate, and I stepped off an hour early almost, because we were afraid to be brought down by the erratic riding... :( Ah well, we all need to learn! But two weeks ago a different coach took that session and he let us do our won thing, i.e. pursuit training, in between their improvers sessions... as in we were on the track in their breaks and vice versa. Worked much better!
glad your knee held up Hann :D
i found a pic

It held up, but it isn't good for any training, let alone racing :(
Thinking about going private, which is VERY expensive, but I only have two knees... and at this rate, I can't ride a bike or run for that matter...
mate i reckon if you can possibly afford it - theres nowt more worth investing in than your body - especially when you want to use it like you do!
Planning on attempting this with some mates on Saturday.... anyone done it and have any tips or advice?

White stuff predicted... :)
Daz, yes please :)
Hanneke,
It is the same people who do NHS and private operations and do similar jobs in both cases. Perhaps you get better 'hotel' accommodation when a private patient. If I was you, I would not throw money away going private. I had an NHS arthroscopy, which was subcontracted to a private hospital (as many are) and the result has been first class.
Yiannis
My GP gave me three options, I took the earliest. If you are given such information ask what type of hospital they are and perhaps go for one that sounds small/private. I also had a shoulder keyhole op and that was subcontracted to a small private one. The accommodation and care was very good.
Yiannis
Thanks Yiannis! I am seeing the GP again tomorrow, about something un-related, but am wanting to discuss this with him...
Dilemma, please comment.
I want to cycle all winter including work and back and turbo train if the weather is really bad.
Bike 1 is 6 month old Cannondale CAAD9 Triple
Bike 2 is 8 year old Halfords Carrera Compact
Bike 3 is 10 year old Claud Buttler Mountain bike
Which gets set up on the TT as a permanent fixture and which is the winter road bike?
Get a turbo tyre and put it on the rear wheel of the Cannondale and put that on the turbo... Ride the old bike on the road and when the weather gets snowy and the like, use the MTB in stead :) Sorted!
Thanks Han
PS Get well soon
Ooh I'm aching
3 x 50 minute hard spin sessions. Biked before and in between the classes.
That was bloody hard work
Likewise, 20 odd miles on the road, inc a romp up the Garth mountain via the steepest route, just got back as it was getting dark and double spin. Lycra (lots), sweat (lots), just kept my head down and didn't look, just like Daz told me:closed:
