Don't worry, Karen. With a wing and a prayer and plenty of adventures you'll still get round quicker than I will, and I've recceed the lot. :p

Karen i will be trying to keep up with Helen who has the local knowledge too! But i maystruggle there too! Will be a laugh anyway i may wellget lost. I am heading over there on the mt bike in the morning for a scoot around got an ear infection at mo so struggling to run so the bike will have to do. Not biking over hoofstones though!
just put the cps on the map and had a quick look at it, i dont know dont know the area at all but ive concluded one thing, theres an awful lot of paths around there. plenty of potential for detours !!!!
I've got an entry form printed off put haven't sorted it yet. I had a 'mare last time I did it and it was one of the worst days running I've had. I'll be there mind :closed:
evening all, was there ever a conclusion wether north along the boundery line from hoof stones to res(which looks my favoured choice) or east along the permissive path then north over hoar stile and heponstall moor was the runner freindliest line ? also not knowing the area at all any veiws on the sections lumbutts to cross stones and jerusalem farm to to end and nab end to erringden would be welcomed as these look pretty complicated with all the path choices. roll on sat looking forward to a new event
also i presume we cant just use print off with it being a scout event , which is fair enough but do we have to carry a full map or can we carry just the top half (the area we will actually be in ) my point being that to re fold/arrange the map for the current section on the day if it is winy and/or raining is a bigger job with a full map and has more chance of the map getting damaged the longer its out its case ? i realise the scout kit checks are thorough and i totally agree with carrying full kit but wonderd if anyone has a solution/ answer ?.
Just started looking at this years route and the options for crossing Heptonstall moor bring back memories of when I did this event on the route before last in 2008. My first time and first run in area and I wasn't prepared well - didn't realise no route descrip till near the day - but remember having the same indecision about the route to cross this moor in opposite direction from Widdop Res to get to CP at Keb Bridge (I think?).
That day I remember the moor being a bit like descibed above, I probably lost the actual track, but then I hit a fence and turned eastward to meet a track. I'm not sure if that was the fence on Hoar Side Moor or if I crossed Stansfield moor (south) too. But remember I'd run along fence so far then there would be a channel of mud to jump, repeating for half a mile or so. One jump I didn't make and ended up waist deep and had to be pulled out (I didn't think that could really happen until then).
Happy days :D and I'm sure if that was fence on Hoar side moor it won't be as boggy as that this year anyway. Maybe we'd had a wet year in 2008 and it had certainly rained and snowed during the day of event that year, anything off path or road was really muddy. Interested that if anyone on here can recall that far back of they had a similar muddy experiance - or maybe my routefinding was just naff back then. I was certainly knackered after covering the first 20m too fast, so maybe it seemed harder work than it was.
The organisers are quite sensible about kit. They are not over-zealous. They are reasonable (in fact I think they're great).
I'll be taking print outs for the run. I'll have the OS map with me at kit check and if the kit check people don't like my print outs then the OS map will live in my backpack and I'll navigate using the print outs anyway.
Yes, the route across the Hoof Stones Moor in 2008 was atrocious. I remember the tussocks from hell. I am not getting involved with lots of tussocks this year.
The view from the top of Hoof Stones Moor is absolutely fantastic. You can see all down the Calder valley system and over to Burnley and beyond. It's a nice but boggy spot.
I'm not at all sure about the route from Nab End to Erringden Grange. The thing that matters is how quickly you can descend and ascend. It's not obvious to me that the shortest route is always the best route in those situations.
There's lot of route choices, so I think it'll be an interesting race to run and navigate.
Have a good`un folks,
I am not running Calderdale this year having chosen to do Coledale Horseshoe race as a return to a bit more Fellrunning.
Doing Fellsman though:thumbup:
i did think of carrying print outs and map but the printers sulking with me at the mo so think ill just take the top half of map what i need. thanks for info re kit check. ive pretty much made my rough plans just dont know the terrain bogs etc. not too botherd about quickest lines im there for a training day out in a new area. i think youre right about being an intresting day and a good nav exercise
Thay do ask you to carry os not just print outs. Been up Hoof stones tonight hard work across boundery fence, water up to my knees. Still undecided on route choice.
Knee deep ! Something to look forward to then. May have to look at pemissive path then.
Still coughing after last weekend's cold. I just hope I feel a lot better by tomorrow night. If not, it looks like I'll have to miss this year. I'm not a happy bunny at the moment, but...the only way is up...
Sorry you won't be at Calderdale, DT. You passed me on the Haworth Hobble heading up Moorside Lane and dragged me to the finish as I didn't want to take any wrong turnings in Haworth. I was hoping for something similar tomorrow. Have a great weekend in the Lakes anyway.
Right then, all set just about. I've got a new emergency blanket from Pete Blands as per Karens suggestion. I've got photocopies of the OS sections so that I don;'t have to carry the full OS map - does anyone think this should be ok? The weather is looking ok now, but I'm sure it will be nice and wet underfoot. After trying to reccie the Hoof Stones bit in thick clag last Sunday, I am still none the wiser so will go with the masses on that one. With regard to the earlier question about Nab End to Errington Grange route choice, I am going with the route from Nab End to Windle Hill house, down to Hollin Hey, down a narrow walled lane which meets Cragg Vale road then up through Spring Wood to the top of the old quarry (Haworth Hobble opposite way round) because it starts as a good access track and is easy to follow. Once on Errington Moor its a quick left and then right across to the good stoney/grassy lane which kicks you straight out at the Grange.
Think there was also a question about Lumbutts to Mount Cross earlier - basically again its the HH opposite way round, onto main road, up Castle street, find little narrow lane between houses which goes steep up to church then up tarmac to golf club then follow bridleway lane up to Mount cross.
If anyone thinks or knows anything different to these route choices let me know, looking forward to it. Just wish I could shake off the sore throat and ear ache!
yep im all done too , map done bag packed just weather too check and shorts or tights descion in the morning . going to make it up as i go along on the iffy bits and have a steady plod round and enjoy the day. see you all there
Interesting run today- think we had every weather bar torrential rain (thank goodness).
On paper I wasn't sure I liked the 'new' route and ceratinly the tussocks after Hoof Stones and the long road at the end took their toll, but on reflection it was nice to have the challenge of a new route. Thanks to all the marshalls who were efficient and cheerful as usual. Nice to chat to so many and thansk to those who kept me going
You had a good run Karen after looking like you were struggling early on. Well Done. Marshalls, as always were great, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sorry i missed you old un, were you running with britnick from the start? Wish i was doing the fellsman again after today, but wife's birthday on the 28th so have to wait till Old Counties Tops for another long un.
Thanks all concerned:)
Steve,
You looked to be going well yourself when I saw you at Penistone CP?
Well done Steve that's a brilliant time. Shame it clashed with Coledale otherwise I'd have done it this year.
i agree with karen an intresting day on new ground , we made a few "intresting" navigational choices and did 8.20 so a bit slower than id planned but had a good training day for fellsman and a few chats with a few freinds and made a couple more. i looked out for you steve but didnt see you mate i did start with nick which was as always a pleasure and met drunken euphoria and finished with claire so all in all a good day out a big thankyou to all the marshalls and organizers for all there time and work.
Good time on your feet training for the Fellsman mate, i made a right arse of nav from delph end to jerusalem farm, so much for my local knowledge, put my running partner through some heather bashing to get back on track:o
Great bloke is Nick, a good pony day out, all the best for the Fellsman old un:thumbup:
cheers steve hopefully get to meet you somewhere down the line, hes a top bloke. i chose a couple of bad lines but found a couple of good ones too
Agree with Karen and others, yesterday was so well organised and a big thank you to the organisers and the marshalls - the refreshments were great and welcomed. Have to say at Jerusalem Cp I couldn't be bothered to go up the stairs to get any nibbles as I feared I may not have got back down them!! Was thinking about 8 hours, chuffed to get it over and done with in 7.17, with a sore throat and ear ache. I think the beechams sachets got me round!
Glad I reccied Delph to Luddendon Foot, and was dreading the Hoof Stones section in trail shoes - waders would have been better... Steve Foster - I think it was you I caught up going down to New Bridge, you were running with a lady. When I didn't see you at Jerusalem I presumed you had scampered off well ahead, sorry to hear you had a detour on the moor top - not what you need so near to the end.
Another top Calderdale Hike. Usual smooth organisation and plentiful foodstops all part of a very reasonable price. I really liked the last 3 years route, but maybe I was being a bit spoilt with the dry conditions and lack of a tough moorland section, so it was good to get out and learn about this new route. Given the conditions and not pushing too hard it was nice to get back in 8.40ish.
Navigation was a mixed bag for me, had to scramble under and over a few barbed wire fences in early miles and then soon after Cross Stones had to scramble up a slippery bank. But I think we made up for some of that extra distance - if not time - with a diagonal crossing of the moor from Hoof Stones to Gorple Upper res dam (not as wet or tussocky as I'd feared). Also learnt from a knowledgable local some good route choices after the Bronte Bridge and across and off Midgley moor (Cheers again for those). Then a bad route choice at the death from the canal to Sowerby probably added a bit. Don't think we could have gone that much shorter though and still did over 38m.
Does anybody know how this route compares to lasy years elevation-wise? I've recorded it as less (garmin FR 205), but didn't seem that way out there. How were the east-then north and north-then east routes to Widdop? Wet, tussocks, runnable? Did anyone go significantly under 38, or even 37?
Nice to meet you old un, hope to catch you at more events and maybe a training run closer to home sometime. Also good to see other familiar faces on the day. Good day and felt there was plenty left in the bag.
You must be the Wharfedale lady with the ponytail, it was my own fault, i went off to the right rather than over the top from delph, done it on the mtb but it's slower running, especially when you miss the path! You must have got to Jerusalem before us. Good run even though you were'nt 100% Well Done Twinkletoes:thumbup:
Drunkeneuphoria- no idea of mileage or climb but i was back in very similar time to previous years,(6.39 in 2011, 6.41 in 2010 and 6.52 in 2009) and that after a dodgy start. So not much in it?
I followed fence north after Hoof Stones and then hit the big track to reverse the Hobble route- plenty of wet and tussocks but it seems it was equal time to those who went for your diagonal route as two of us slit and both got to Widdop Dam at same time!
Glad you enjoyed it Twinkletoes and hope you got to the party in Patterdale safely.
I had an experiment yesterday- mainly coz I thought I was going to have a rubbish run. I mademyself eat all the way round- and had a storming second half, so maybe everyone has been right and I need to eat more when I run. Also very odd but quads and hams are fine today whereas after Hobble I could barley move. If I do it next year I will be looking for an aletrnative to the long road down after J Farm
Didn't go to plan for me to say the least. Wooden legs from about the tenth mile in and spent the entire time fighting the urge to pull out. Thanks to the organisers for a brilliantly arranged event - the chilli and yoghurts at the end and the bananas/flapjack and good humour of the marshalls throughout were most welcome!
Really enjoyed my long day out in Calderdale which I was using as a training run for the Fellsman. Managed to keep up with Twinkletoes until after the soggy, snowy Hoofstones section but then the weight of the sandwich she had stuffed into my backpack at Lumbutts started to tell and I slowed down. I then ran with another fellow Wharfedaler for the rest of the race, with only a couple of small deviations from the best path, possibly. Spent a bit of time wandering around after New Bridge finding a way up to Pecketts Well.
I think the checkpoint at Jerusalem Farm inside a barn with mugs of tea and a good layout of food was the best I have ever seen in a race, and it was cruel to have to leave it knowing there was only about 4 miles left.
Think I ran just behind Stevefoster early on, between checkpoints 2 and 3, but you disappeared into the distance up Stoodley Pike before I introduced myself.
On my Garmin I made it about 37.5 miles, but only got 5,500ft ascent, which feels about right. Just need to double the height gain for the Fellsman.
Steve you're flying these days. You disappeared out of sight within the first half mile. 7:30 is an excellent time. Sorry we didn't get a chance to chat beforehand. I thought I might catch you afterwards. Ha! What was I thinking? I finished in 8:34, which I was quite pleased with given that I was coughing up lumps of lung all the way round, which wasn't all bad. At least I left a few chunky morsels for the slugs to chew on. I had to have a liedown to recover before the drive home. The exercise must have done me good because I feel much better today.
Karen, you had a stormer. Well done. For a more interesting route after Jerusalem Farm, take the footpath diagonally right up the hill immedately after the farm. It joins up with a higher road, then choose your route from there. It's the way I went. I arrived at the next checkpoint at exactly the same time as others who took the lower level road route.
ol un, good to see you again. That's another good time under the belt.
Drunken, I did exactly the same as you in taking the diagonal down to the reservoir dam after Hoof Stones. I couldn't believe my good luck in finding such good terrain after the peat bogs I'd recced along the fence line. I thought I'd made good time too, but it's probably not as fast as we think because of the additional descent we have to do before climbing back up.
Twinkletoes, 7:17, simply awesome.
Cheers Nick, Well Done yourself, never easy running when your below par. I needed a good un after missing the Hobble.
Karen, Yes I eventually got to Patterdale at 8.30pm, just in time for the bacon butties and chips! I managed half a glass of wine before my eyelids started going! Poor attempt but I managed until midnight before bed called. I let the other Wharfedalers party on into the early hours... That is quite bizarre what you said about your quads and hams after Hobble - I was crippled until the Thursday afterwards, my quads were constantly cramping, but after Saturday the legs are just tired. I also struggle with eating whilst running, but am gradually improving on the 'little and often' approach.
I liked the Jerusalem to Luddendon Foot bit as it was just easy tarmac that you didn't have to think where to put tired feet, I just shuffled along - each to their own.
DinoF - I was thinking about that ham sandwich yesterday - what did it look like by the end??!! You had a good run on Saturday, because it will reflect the speed you need to go at for completing the Fellsman - well done!
