Thanks for the advice Mr Brightside, you have me a bit worried now, I hope the legs hold out, looking at the map there does not look any easy way back to the start once you get into the race.
Oh well do or die as they say.

I'm giving it a go....done the race six times now, reccie run last Sun. and didn't remember it all.If you find your running on the flat, you've gone wrong.
The weather looks brighter :-)
i am going to head down, just for the run out like
just looked out the window and can see top of Arant Haw. It's a great race. Shame I'll only be out spectating tho.
Easy once you've found it once (and then you can see it from the M6, seriously), but I'm not convinced it's a timesaver when you've got tired legs/mind. It's short but narrow enough and crosses steep scree so you have to concentrate, and I've find myself going slower or avoiding altogether in the wet.
But then, you avoid a rockier path off Calders, so maybe six of one etc. Be interesting to hear what route everyone took today.
Winner should be back now...
Today's race was my first AL. I said I just wanted to get round but secretly hoped for sub 3 hrs. After an hour of running I really was just glad to get round and missed my target by twenty minutes. I found it so hard, even though I'd recce'd a few weeks earlier. It just seemed to sap my energy and by the time I got back to Howgill Lane I had to walk. Having said that..... really enjoyed bits of it and the weather was a bit better than expected (still got soaked). At least I found the trod round Calders
Thanks very much, will be back next year.
Well I didn't die,;) I enjoyed my run although I did take it very steady, I run round with my mate, my plan was to run halfway round with him then head for the finish at my own pace, however when the weather changed and he looked like he was suffering a bit I decided that I wouldn’t of been much of a mate if I just ran off and left him, so I stopped with him and encouraged him a bit, we crossed the line together. We were towards the back of the field not quite last but I would guess not far off. I found it reasonably easy but that is no doubt because of our steady pace, if I had pushed on from the start I am sure I would have been well knacked.
I had no problems with the legs holding up. Thanks for the photos, we never made it to the cakes but I recognise the two ladies getting there well deserved cakes in the photos.
Well done to everybody that competed today.

Well having gone poorly at Weasdale (never seemed to be able to get going properly) I thought I'd do Sedbergh cos there was lots of climbing - it's good training for the CCC. I took the first half steady and then got going on the third (and last) climb before CP4 (crumbs it was hot and sweaty work to there). The rain came just as I passed CP4 and was good encouragement to move quicker up to traversing climb out of Bowderdale. I got running properly at the top of that and had a pretty rapid last third.
After spraining my ankle last year coming off Arant Haw and walking 11 miles nursing a very rapidly growing melon foot last year it was nice to complete the course in good order. Considering I did the first half fairly steadily I'm pleased with 3:15.
Great route, good organisation, thanks to Jon, all his marshalls and the tea ladies. I hope no-one got too wet!

Well just a week away from this and although I won't have chance to recce I do fancy it, so it could be slightly steadier with map and compass in hand especially between CP's 3 & 4. Anyone else planning to turn out?
damn it I forgot all about this, going out too sea for the day :closed:
My first attempt at this one. Looks tough in terms of climb but looking forward to the forgiving howgill turf underfoot....
Mudclawed...very little is forgiving on this one...those soft rolling hills really do look inviting...
CP3 -CP4 no trod, tough going under foot not to mention the incredible climb gradient.
Then the gradual climb up t' calf seems to go on for ever and is runnable... if you still have the legs by then!!
Guaranteed Wobbly legs on the final descent!!
Enjoy!!
Cheers Gaz, I'd heard it was a really easy race and you've just burst me bubble!
forecast looking good so far
Couple of friends are running this so joined them on a recce last week. I think the majority is great fellrunning terrain, mostly soft underfoot with some excellent descents, but I agree the drag up to the calf is bloody awful. Not steep enough for a walk so you end up running it all and it goes on forever.......
Fancy a go at this.
Will Pete Bland be there with maps?
I'll need one....
There should be no shortage of water round the course tomorrow going by the deluge at Howtown today :D
Pete Bland are due to be at Sedbergh. Presume they will have mappos....
I'll be marshalling at Winder - say hello as you pass :)
Does anyone have a grid ref for cp3 stream bend and cp4 stream junction - I can't find anything other than a google map on Kendal ACs webpage for the race and nothing more on the Fellrunner calendar?
First time for me for this race, super race, one of my favourites now I think :-)
Oh and a big thanks to Jon who gave me his map of the route for free after the van sold out :-D
1st jebby 2.11.14 2nd kim collinson 3rd Darren kay 191 ran 1st lady vic Wilkinson 12th I think? me 16th
Great race today, thank you to Jon and all the marshalls. Well organised as ever and a good turn out.
Pushed hard in first half to meet new cut off times and struggled second half ended up at 4:04.
Picked a disastrous line off Winder cost me a few minutes. What is the secret to getting that last descent right!!??
Said hello at last CP to tinyman.
Yeah great race. Some of the contour running is brilliant. Made up for missing Tebay this year. Although Gaz66 is right about some the contours between 3 and 4 which were very hard. especially when the section when drop was on the right, the left seemed all ok. Ran up the calf and felt ok but then cramped really badly on the descent and just missed out on three hours. Next time :)
Oh and thanks to all concerned. Anyone know how many ran?
