A lone young starling was sat in the middle of the road today, couldnt watch it get run over so went and picked it up and popped it in a bush where it bounced away.....probably dead now anyway.

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Found some bird of prey (?) pellets on Lad's Leap the other day, about 6cm long 2.5 cm wide, whitish, took them home and dissected them, feather quills, bones, some fairly big, fur and feathers. Anyone any idea what they are likely to be from? I had a look on the internet and most likely seemed to be barn owl, but thought the mooers would be a bit outside their range? Find quite a lot of these pellets up there - do foxes or other animals produce pellets?

Could be a short-eared owl - we get those up on the moors (or even mooers).

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Daft as it sounds, old Runningfox was caught in a fox snare on Easter Monday! I was running down a wallside across the moor, on Open Access land, when I was brought to earth with a horrendous thud, wrenching my knee and twisting my back. Luckily, the snare tightened round the top of my shoe. If my foot had passed through the loop and it had whipped tight around my achilles tendon it could have proved very nasty indeed. Not far away was a sheep with twin lambs which could have been caught in the darn thing.
A short time ago, on one of my runs, I came across as many as ten of these fox snares, mostly set in sheep 'trods' or in vehicle tracks where people and sheep walk - and where I run. It's not on!!!

Churping doesn't sound like a swift Al - more like a swallow.
'Screaming' is a more accurate description of a swift.

One of my very fave birds - Julian Barnes talks about 'swifting' in one of his books - basically sitting outside a carefully selected pub in the summer, drinking real ale whilst watching and listening to swifts tear about outside screaming. The Fleece, up the road from me, is ideal!! ;):D

Free-running snares aren't illegal...'owever they should not be set in places where non-target animals could be caught. Legally they have to be checked daily...preferably soon after dawn then again before dusk to prevent prolonged distress of the held animal...it's the same with any type of trap really.
Seems like the snares you've come across could be illegally set?
If in doubt you need to report such incidences to your local Police Wildlife Liaison Officer.

Blimey! Do you expect me to read every post on this thread? Mind you, I was surprised how late it was that I saw my first this year.

Done that. I've an appointment with our local widlife officer in a few days time. I also had a word with the farmer who had sheep near the snares.

Must mention - swallows are back building their nest in the outside porch (third year running). And noticed t'other night that a starling is doing the same on a corner of the house.
Just waiting for an owl to take up residence now!
