I agree that the finish was better, although having seen the lane next to the cricket club before the start I couldn't believe we were going to run up it. After the rest of the race though, it seemed positively tame!

A fine day out, thanks so much to all who organised, stood freezing at the CPs and catered back at club. I'm black and blue and crippled from the nose down this morning as I suspect are many others. There was a great atmosphere of people looking after each other out on the hill. I'm wondering if microspikes could have knocked a big chunk off the time for the middle section and justified the faff and the weight - I'd have had them on sure if on a normal day out by myself. Good to catch up with DT and Ed and to meet up with Ricardo. Splendid start to the seasonP x

Agree with all the votes of thanks to organiser, marshals, helpers.
Thanks also to Andy, Raj and Elise for waiting for me on several occasions. It made the slog back from Cock Hill less lonely!

I have to admit that DT's skater's stance is most impressive as he launches into that glide.

Almost all the comments I have read have praised the organisers for allowing the race to go ahead. The prevailing sentiment seems to be one of "we're all grown ups and we're all responsible for our own safety and can make our own decisions about whether or not to run". While I'd agree with all of this I think there is a further consideration.
When Chris turned his ankle in the race yesterday it seemed like he could hardly have picked a worse place. He was several miles from a road, had no chance of a mobile phone signal and was surrounded by some treacherous conditions (well done if you didn't fall over - I had several tumbles). Chris was a couple of minutes ahead of me in the race and yet by the time I caught up with him he was leaning on the shoulders of two runners (John and Johnny) and had started his painfully slow hobble towards the Walshaw Dean reservoirs. Some runners had already been instructed to run on to the marshals at Walshaw and send help. Other runners stopped and provided bandages and painkillers and none went past without checking to see if there was any way they could help.
Now consider what might have happened had the race been cancelled. Some of us might have stayed under the duvet but most would have headed out for a run across the moors anyway. And, having originally planned on doing The Trog, quite a few of us would have made it into a long run. We would have been in groups, some bigger some smaller and few of us would have been out on our own. While some may have attempted the route of The Trog, most would have wandered off on any number of routes. Canceling the race would not have prevented many of us from running. Imagine the consequences of one of us coming a cropper under those circumstances. How many other people would be around to help with an injury? Who would runners go and get help from if they left a friend on the moors? It would have been a far more difficult situation.
So, by making the decision to go ahead with the race, the organisers gave us all a relatively safe environment in which to participate. Take part in a fell race in extreme conditions and yes, you do need to be sure that your equipment, fitness and navigation is up to the challenge. But you can also be confident that if things do go wrong, you've got far more chance of getting assistance than if you just head out on your own. All the runners around you are willing to give assistance, marshals are keeping track of numbers and are on standby to leap into action following reports of an injury.
Rather than putting people at risk by going ahead with the race, I would argue that the organisers actually reduced the chances of one of us becoming a serious casualty. Well done and many thanks to them for making the decision they did.
