Seems a touch sensitive - "B" doesn't mean second best, does it?
AL/BL etc doesn't indicate quality and it was never intended to, surely?
If AL/BL etc is considered to be a measure of quality then we are back to the 'proper fell race' argument again.
The status (or "quality"), classic or otherwise is determined by any number of factor, as YT notes, but the grade is intended to give an indication, an indication only, of the severity or something similar.
alias, Stagger, jodg, DT (and probably others), it's all very well saying "whos bothered?" etc. but it doesn't add much to the debate, does it? If you are really not bothered, why bother posting on the thread, since you won't be bothered whatever the categorisation system is or even if we have one.
There's a tendency for some posters on this forum to rubbish a debate just because they haven't a strong opinion one way or the other but if everyone was so apathetic no-one would organise or measure anything and the competitive side of fellrunning wouldn't be much without organisation or measurement now would it?
Yes, its hard to measure/categorise these things accurately/objectively but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be attempted or debated. Personally, I find it an interesting debate. :p
If I remember rightly the PPP was correctly classified (according to height / mile and distance) in the Fellrunner handbook as a BL in about 2005 and then it reappeared (without any course changes) as an AL the year after.
All I would say on the subject is that when it was a BL is was much easier;)
Sorry Ian, I was just having a dig at DT's assertion that the only stat that mattered was 3 peaks to run over.
The Dunnerdale is only 5miles/1800ft (Cat AS) ... oops there I go again, getting all category-obsessed :D ;)
You should have a look at the MM's race, no 'big' climbs, yet packs 6000ft of ascent in 12 miles because it's up and down so much.
