You will not get much speed and stamina by being stuck on the bog.
It is the bogs that trip you up first and make you face-dive into their murky depths that are really interesting.
Do the peat hags on top of Kinder Scout or Bleaklow count as real bogs?

Re: First Bog Experience!
Knee deep is nothing. It needs to be at least crotch deep or it doesn't count. Panic should only set in when you realise you have to lay on your stomach to sort of wriggle out (difficult) or get your mate to pull you out (after they have stopped laughing and put the camera away...).
Re: First Bog Experience!

Hi Egglett
I hope you are coming to do the 'Grin and Bear it' later in the Year, the guy in third place whilst crossing to Outer Edge Trig went in up to his Armpits:eek: The Bogmonster up there is legendary.
Chest deep is the norm if you don't know which bit of peat to trust...
I will be crossing his terror-tory this Sunday so if you don't hear from me again...
Ian
Re: First Bog Experience!

Re: First Bog Experience!
There's various stories about the grimpen mires on Dartmoor, like
Quote:
Some time ago a man was making his way across Aunehead and was annoyed about losing his way in the boggy terrain up there. As he struggled across the bog he saw a hat lying on the bog, so to relieve his frustration he gave the hat a good kick. Much to his surprise he found the head of a well- known local farmer underneath. Apologising profusely, he asked the farmer if he was all right, to which he replied that he was fine, but he was worried about the horse he was sitting on.
