Cracking long day out, met some good people and bloody hard!
My favourite is always the Anni Waltz. Fantastic atmosphere, great running and free beer!
For pure mountain scenery and feeling of achievement, I'd rate Wasdale as the finest fell race in England, and on the other end of the scale I discovered BOFRA races this year. Drink beer, eat choclate cake then make a mad dash with 20 other idiots up and down some cliff, then somebody gives you money :D. Rock and roll!
I did 3 or 4 brilliant races in the Dales this year. Burnsall and PPP were grand days out, but Peejay's Great Whernside race had perhaps my favourite blend of running, scenery, good company and beer ;):)
Good thread this:D
Favourite has to be Sca Fell Pike, a 'proper' fell race. Different types of terrain, grass, rock and scree. Brilliant low key atmosphere, which is what fell running is all about to me. Don't forget the comedy of the day either, Wharfeego missing the start by 2 minutes, and as i came of the top he and saw him shouts, 'i missed the fekking start lad!' Brilliant.
Hopefully some more good races to come, roll on 2009!
I think High Cup Nick in Feb & Whernside in Sept were probably my faves this year. 1st time for both of them for me and great courses. Managed to get quite a few in this year for the 1st time in a good while. Lovin' it.
Anni Waltz was brilliant, as was Duddon Valley and Tanky's Trog.
Loved the Hobblyhike too.
Although not a fell race, the 3 Peaks Cyclocross was my highlight:cool:
Anni Waltz & Lad's Leap for me...
Anniversary Waltz for me for the sheer enjoyment. PPP for atmsophere.
My first lakeland race, as a warm up for the PPP and I'll be back again this year (2009) and hopefully taking on a few more.
Pencilled in AW, PPP, Duddon, and then perhaps Borrowdale if I'm still in one piece.
Manx Mountain Marathon.
Simply brilliant
Fav's
1 Ben
2 Gt Whernside
3 Anni Waltz
Mi best efforts
1 Whicken hill whizz
2 Wharfedale off road half
3 Ben (ascending only)
Black Mountains, 17 miles of sheer brilliance, down to the hand written results you get sent in the post a few weeks later :)!
Langdale, as it was my first fell race outside South Wales, with an intimidatingly large field of runners... Never seen so many fell runners in once place :)
JURA - Brilliant stuff:)
PPP, holme moss, tanky's and a few other long ones:D
not done anni waltz and is a cetain fav by eveyones account here will make it a certain next time round.
ppp was a horrible race for me this year hoped for so much and suffered the whole way round!
Edale Skyline; brilliant weather, gorgeous scenery and bertie bassett handing out jelly babies, it doesn't get any better!
Didn't get to do half the races I wanted to this year due to injury in May/June followed by pregnancy in July!...but as a newcomer it has to be PPP ...didn't get my place til March... not enough training...but did it...yeah! x
Hoping to be back there in 2010...got to get a better time!
Watch out for Guisborough 2010 Deejay...will revenge be yours?!!! :p
That sort of race appeals to me despite the fact I'm likely to struggle completely with it.
As I've done so few fell races this year and they've all been less than wonderful. I'll opt for the Pentland Skyline race as it was such a mental struggle for me, just dipping inside cut off at Drover's Road and then losing places between then and the finish where I just about avoided finishing last. Also as it was part of a great long weekend away in Edinburgh which took in a Fall gig on the Sunday night.
Black Mountains was a classic this year. Perfect weather, friendly field and hills gettin' steeper!
Long Mynd was its usual gnarly self, plus had the pleasure of meeting up with some Fell Ponies.
Whernside for me too, then Blencathra, maybe Kinder in 3rd place.
Not done any big races, but I have to say MOST of the races I have done this year I have enjoyed (Once I finished).
Ones that stick in my mind though are Two Lads Fell Race, Lingmell Dash and Shepherds Skyline.
Wanted to try three shires but it wasn't to be. Next year though!!!
:DPea
My favourite is the Gravy Pud in tintwistle, as it is the only fell race i have done so far.
In 2009, i am going to try and do atleast 6 fell races, although i finished a lot closer to the back than the front at the gravy pud, i enjoyed every hard 64mins of it. i've never felt so satisfied as i did when i crossed the line to the applause i recieved,
It was a wonderful race and i'll be back next year to get in under an hour.

1. Jura - because its not just the race (good as it is) its the whole cycling and camping thing.
2. Langdale - because it has everything a proper lakeland fell race should have, different terrain, climbs, descents, traverses, route choices, nav difficulties etc but isn't too long
3. 3 Shires - because if you can get there the race is on! (plus like Langdale without the route choice)
Roaches. :)
Overall I'd say that it was the Fairfield Horseshoe down to a combination of the beautiful (and oddly weird) blue horizon as viewed soon after the turn at the top and of course the non-stop 4 mile descent where, after a while, I just couldn't stop laughing and smiling to myself almost all the way down. Fabulous.
I also enjoyed the Anniversary Waltz, despite the freezing wind chill on the tops. Probably the most post race satisfaction was from doing 4:22 in the 3P (which I'm sure I could now shave to nearer 4:10) and for getting round the Tour of Pendle this year and feeling relatively okay at the end :D
Auld Lang Syne may be mine yet...you never know.
Several of my most pleasurable (usually in retrospect) races have already had a mention, so I'll add Pen-Y-Ghent to the list. Great atmosphere, great scenery, great descent, and I do like coming down the best!
Loved Cardington Cracker this year - even with a chest infection. Superb weather, scenery and a well conceived course.
Oh, and the soup afterwards. Edale also a belter and Roaches would have been if it weren't for the slurry.
I agree with Stolly about the descent off Fairfield :D
and Snowdon was "an experience"
but the one that stands out in my mind is Macclesfield Forest - a perfectly formed short horseshoe course mainly in forest (duh!), and a glorious summer evening for it  :)
Really enjoyed Rombalds Stride in the snow then Mallerstang Yomp too.
Fav has to be Ben Nevis, Great Race, Great Weekend, Great Saturday night.
Close second has to be Buckden, that final descent to the river and the leap over the wall to the finish line is something to cherish !!!
hard one.
The Ben
Jura
Ireland British Champs race
Borrowdale
Would be my favourites, but Carneddau (first race win) and Peris, great local race, would be up there.
My best performances would be Jura (3:42) Ben (1:45) and Borrowdale, top 20 finish.
My favourite race of 2008 was winter hill race closely followed by Waugh's Well. Maybe I am a sadeist but I love winter hill race. Roll on February for another 2 hours of bog and hills.
Didn't do many races last year but my favourite race of 2008 was Helvellyn. Very windy day, awesome final descent and superb cakes afterwards. Would definitely recommend this cracking little race.
My favourite race in 2008 had to be Great Whernside, a proper fell race. This was closely followed by Ben Nevis, Burnsall, Hodder Valley show and Flower Scar. I would recommend all these events.
Fav race- Tanky's in the snow and ice
Worst race- my performance (or utter lack of it) in my leg of the FRA relays. Felt horrible all the way round
Fav event overall- Highlander MM. Superb location, a very kind and willing last-minute stand-in partner who proved to be great company over the weekend. Real ale, food and dancing at the mid-camp.
Worst by a mile was Three Shires. Very ill on last climb and all way to finish. Very dehydrated. Own fault. Was loving it until that point and going really well (for me).
Other than that, only others were Pendle Cloughs and Tour of Pendle, both brilliant!!
Rombalds Stride Was A Good Race For Me ,how Did You Get On In This One Team Pie?
Fav races.
Long.....Kinder Trog
Med.....Fairfield
Short...Great Wernside....(Even though I hate short races)
Cant remember for some reason now 'owmeknee' was that long ago!
Roll on the seventh!
you in this time?
