2011 calder valley round
CALDER VALLEY ROUND - 16 miles and 4000'
(AL category fell race equivalent)
No entry fee - no prizes - just a great day out !!
Start: White Lion car park, Mytholmroyd (anytime to suit yourself)
Target Times: Elite - sub 2-45, A class - sub 3-15, Standard - over 3-15
This training run cum challenge was relaunched last year to celebrate its 21st Anniversary (1989-2010). It has its own web page here with a more streamlined route specifically aimed at Fellrunners. Following its success in 2010 clubs and individuals are again invited to enter into an informal friendly competition and complete the round during 2011. There is now a series of record times to go for as well as some new target times. :w00t:
Full details including directions to the start are here.
It's all dead simple:
- Download the route sheet from the web page.
- Run round the route at any time to suit yourself.
- Register your time and club on this thread.
- Personal registrations only please - do not register other runners times.
- Like most worthwhile things in life this all depends on honesty so please stick strictly to the route described.
- A results summary will be published on here every few months and at the year end.
Good Running and Good Luck !!!

To get things off the ground in 2011 there will be a run on Sunday 9th January - start 8.30 prompt from the White Lion car park , Mytholmroyd (see web page if you need directions).
All welcome on the run and in the pub afterwards!!
What better way to get back into gear and kick off the new year. :w00t: :w00t:

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Hi MM. Anybody fancy a crack at this on Sunday 23rd. It's my 18th and I fancy a bit of a run. I'm also having a go on the 28th December to try and lower the junior record by a good few minutes
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
Unfortunately I can't do either but if they fall through due to weather problems I will keep an eye on this as an alternative.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
What sort of pace will this be at, I could do with getting something in before the Hebden.

At this time of year the objective is to have a good training run - last year there was some snow about and it took about 3-30 but if conditions were better we might be able to go a bit quicker. On the other hand we are not going to leave anyone who does not know the route. Hope to see you there!
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
I would reckon it would take me at least 3:30, best get a couple of runs in!

Dont wqorry about it mate, i'm like a walking/running turkey at the mo:)
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
Yeah no need to worry about the pace - we will stay with the slowest. It's not the conditions for breaking any targets so we will just treat it a a recce. We can have a good crack at it in the Spring.

Where do I register my time today?

Register on the 2010 results thread - then I will produce the final results list at the weekend.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
I'm playing this one by ear, my IT band went a couple of weekends ago, I'll see how it is this weekend and decide then.
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
Oh this sounds good! think ill have a bash at this at some point!
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
I might be up for this on the weekend. 16 miles is more than I've done for a couple of months now, but if the pace is on the slower side and others wouldn't be potentially frustrated with that then count me in subject to permission from SWMBO.

No problem - next Sunday will be an ideal opportunity for anyone else who wants to go round at a slow pace.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
I'm out, my IT band feels just ain't loosening enough. Enjoy, I've go this on the list for this year!

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Well, i have to be blunt tony, i've been invited to a party saturday night where there will be plenty of single women!! so i dont think i'll be fit enough sunday Morning (only because of alcoholic intake of course)!! so i'll give it a miss. But i'm going to be having a go at Three peaks this year so will be doing some training runs by myself and possibly with Adrian so how about getting together, possibly doing a bunk room and pub jobie soon etc?

Looks like you're getting led astray again DD. Why go chasing the possibility of a few moments of pleasure :love:when you can have 4 hours of guaranteed ecstasy on the CVR :w00t:. You youngsters never learn.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Many thanks for leading the way and helping me round today Tony. It's a cracking route. I look forward to doing it again (a) after a bit more training and (b) on a slightly warmer day (only just defrosted!).

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Yes good day out that. Sharp wind and icy in places but not bad for this time of year. It didn't seem to slow down the group from Pudsey & Bramley - they were soon out of sight. They must have been round in under 3 hours.
Second registration of 2011: Mountain Man 3-24 Idle AC

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Squelched round today in 2 hours 17 minutes - splits below. In drier conditions a few more minutes could be knocked off - might have another go later in the year. The tailwind all the way from Stoodley Grange over the Pike and down as far as the woods was appreciated in the closing stages.
Old Town Mill (00:26), Gibson Mill (00.43), Staups Mill (1.15), Stoodley Pike (1.45), Track junction (2.01), Park Cottages (2.10) White Lion (2.17)
Tom Brunt (Holmfirth Harriers)
P.S. The route is ideal for a wet and windy day as it is really sheltered.
-
Re: 2011 calder valley round
A New Year and a new record already. Congratulations Tom, obviously knowing the route now has made a big difference.
Perhaps I can take the opportunity to throw down the gauntlet to all the clubs in the area to include it in their spring or summer programme and get as many club members round as possible - the record is 8 - not to mention having a crack at some of the other records - ladies, doubles, juniors etc.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Just to clarify is juniors u/18 or u/23...if its u/23 i reckon theres a lot of time to come off it

I believe it's u/18 junior and intermediate for u/23

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Well done, Mr Brunt. That's an impressive time over wet ground. You should be able to knock the record out of sight when it dries up!

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Went round the CVR this morning (one lap, anti-clockwise).
Ideal weather, but wet and slippery under foot. Legs gave up on me for last 20mins-never knew it could be so hard running along a canal tow path!
Splits: Old mill 28mins, Gibson Mill 47mins, Straups Mill 1:26, St. Pike 2:02, track junc 2:21, Park Cotts 2:34, Finish 2:41:53
Spookster

Re: 2011 calder valley round
That's still a very good time though Spookster. I think I will wait until it dries up a bit before I have another go !

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Hello there, 'tis my first post on here so I'd best introduce myself. I belong to running club Saffron Striders and tri club WaldenTri down south but me Mum lives just 5mins from the start of this run. I was visiting this weekend so I had a run round on Sunday morning. First of all, a big thank-you to the author of the concise accurate directions. I'm not that fluent at following written routes, but I got round with plenty of pausing to read (I need to practice lots as my main event for this year is the 3 peaks yacht race). Conditions were soggy and my directions (which I'd neglected to laminate) only just survived the rain! T'was a great run though, one I hope to repeat a few times over the next few months, whenever I'm up to visit t'family. Here are the results for my first time round, then:
Old town mill 35, Gibson mill 1-00, Staups mill 2-02, Stoodley Pike 2-52, track junction 3-20, Park cottage 3-35, White Lion finish 3-45.
cheers
Andy

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Hi this route looks really good so would like to have a go in the next few weeks. Is any body planning a gentle plod around and wouldnt mind if i tagged along as my nav skills probably are'nt the best. I work shifts so could manage a weekday morning if easier.

Well done Andy, now you know the route I am sure you'll will be able to knock loads of time off. There are a couple of tricky sections so I am pleased to hear you found the way OK. If you look at the results for 2010 via the CVR web page it will give you an idea of times.

I think Idle AC may go round it again as 3 peaks training - Good Friday (that's 22/4) might be a possibility for that if you are free then. Or if you want to go round before then I sometimes use it as a mid week training run (preferably a Tuesday) - PM with any dates you had in mind.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Had a portly jog round today. My first outing post virus, (Mrs doesn't know I went, best keep it that way). 3:20. Old town mill 35, Gibson mill 52, Staups mill 1:42, Stoodley Pike 2-29, track junction 2:54, Park cottage 3-09, White Lion finish 3-20.
The track junction & Park cottage times are approx as I had no pencil and could only remember the first few.
It was grim on the way up to Stoodley and the clag was well and truly down.

Re: 2011 calder valley round
Thanks MM I will pencil the idle AC date in diary, thanks for the offer of joining yr mid week run, I am looking to step up to longer distances so am.not sure how I would fair and don't wan to ruin yr own training time. I am however doing the noonstones next week so could use that time as a guide. Thanks again for the offer.

Thanks; I might have another crack next weekend (end of month) as I'll be up again and I like to make the most of the hills. Problem with living down here is not enough proper hills!
