Beginner in Sheffield
I enjoy running cross country and walking up mountains and would like to put these 2 together and get into fell running.
Can anyone recommend upcoming races near Sheffield that would be suitable for beginners? I am not new to mountains or racing, but am new to racing on mountains.
Anyone recommend any good routes to start training on, up to about 6 miles? Ones that started at the Fox House or Hathersage would be good, that way I could use public transport.
Thanks

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Hathersage, up to higger tor and then back via owler tor, surprise view carpark and oxhay wood is a nice loop.
From the fox house, I'd go along above burbage edge to upper burbage bridge, up to the trig point on stanage, drop down across higger tor and carl wark and back to the fox house for a pint.
If you want someone to run with, send me a message. Going out from near fox house tomorrow morning if you're interested - probably going along froggatt, curbar and baslow edges and then back via white edge.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Yes, I agree with paul, lovely route but not too demanding. It is a little technical underfoot at times on sheep trods and rock so if you dont feel confident on your ankles then stick to the trail below the edge for a bit and watch the descents

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Race wise would certainly recommend the Totley AC series - http://www.totleyac.org.uk/
Don't think the 2010 dates are on their website yet but the first three (Tigger Tor, Tigers Todger and Totley Moor) all on the FRA calender.
Others close to Sheffield and public transport would include Burbage Skyline, Hathersage Gala, Stanage Struggle, Bamford Carnival, Wolf's Pit for starters.
Stanage Struggle route would make another good 6 mile training run from hathersage -http://www.fbrc.co.uk/Struggle%20map.htm

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Keep an eye out for 'The Trunce', starting again in March

Starting to look for some 'beginner/introduction' races this year.
Last year was basically a couple of Trunces and the Stanage Struggle. So no navigation needed.
The suggestions above have led me to have a quick tour of the net, through them and the gritstone series.
How're the above in comparison, re navigation etc? I note the Wolfs pit website does state full kit req'd

I haven't done wolf's pit so can't comment but none of the others are navigationally challenging. The shorter races such as Hathersage Gala etc., are usually marshalled and all would make good beginner/intro races.
My favourite short race is Grindleford (not the Grindleford Gallop) in June, again not navigationally challenging and ideal for beginners.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Wolf's pit wasn't especially navigationally challenging - although I'm one of those who generally follows the people in front!

Would you be Rhys's sister by any chance.:)

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Indeed I am, though I don't often admit to it ;) Fox House is great for running from, tis really easy to loop back to to make runs shorter/longer - though the knee deep snow up there today made it pretty tough going!

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Dark and White run some good events suitable for beginners up in your neck of the woods. 3 hours in the Peak District, you choose the route.
I've been to a couple and really enjoyed them.

If you scroll about at http://www.totleyac.org.uk/calendar/TotleyColCal.html for long enough, you'll find the dates for the totley races.

I have done some of their events. Good fun, well organised, although somewhat expensive(£9?) to enter if remember correctly.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
The Hope Valley railway line is useful, for accessing fell runs onto Kinder. You could get off at Hope or Edale.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Hi,
Im also relatively new to fell running (I've got my first race- The Wadsworth Half-Trogg next weekend) and also live in Sheffield. I was wondering if anyone fancies going for a run this Sunday from Edale or Hope? (Or somewhere easily accessible from Sheffield by public transport).
It would be nice to get out for about 10 miles and I would greatly appreciate some company!
Cheers
:)

There's Tigger Tor this Sunday, you can catch a bus out to that or carshare. If you end up on Kinder go to the western end and you may come across the Hayfield Trial

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
The Tigger Tor sounds good. What better way to train for your so called first fell race than doing a fell race?
Hopefully there are still places available. I will pop in to accelerate-uk tomorrow and see if I can enter.
Thanks for the advice.

I'm sure you will be able to.
Say hi to Stu and debs in Accelerate and if you want moreinfo on race checkout DP's race calender or send a PM to Darth of the Darkside as Mrs DotDS is one of the Organisors
If you do well I'm told there is some really Excellent 'Ale' for prizes;)

She prefers Padomay rather than Mrs DotDS!
Come and do the race - 9.5 miles all runnable with hot showers and a rugby bar afterwards.
Life doesn't get much better

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
I registered today! Hopefully I won't do anything silly like getting lost.
Cheers for the advice.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Oh Lord - this isn't as easy as posting on the RW forum - and the smileys are a bit scary - I live in Sheffield too and the Tigger Tor a couple of weeks ago was my first fell race - it was a first for my friend too at 57 years young - her face at the end suggested vile expletive, but she couldn't muster the breath - thankfully. Much more fun than road running and I have it on good authority that a pint at the end of each race is compulsory. Marv.
Anyway - first post on here so I'll see what happens. May have posted on a well out of date thread so probably nowt.

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Shit - I'm not a junior member - unless 44 is classed as junior these days! How do I change that?
-
Re: Beginner in Sheffield

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Lets throw a few questions at mozzy, to get his post count up - after all it's only what MB did in the 'master maker'
Hi Moz, why 'Moz'?:)

Mozzy is short for Morris - I used to use Mozgoz until my friend pointed out that 'goz' was something frankly vile that ejects from your mouth. Well not mine, obviously.

...and which bit of sheffield are you from:confused:

Re: Beginner in Sheffield
I think I know the mysterious Mozzy...is that you Kate?!
If so, the Plodder numbers are on the increase, Guy has been along last couple of weeks too and is a smashing bloke. He seems to be enjoying himself anyway!
If not, erm, you won't have a clue what this is about...
-
Re: Beginner in Sheffield
Eyup Simon! Yeah it's me! I think another Smiley bloke may have joined you last night - Alistair? If not then I need to send him a 'why did you wimp out?' email.
First of the Gritstone series in a couple of weeks - you or anyone on here planning on doing that?
