First Bog Experience!
:o Fell into a big last night - knee deep... was a funny thing... at first my thought was PANIC and then because I got cramp in the leg that was free I just decided to calm it a minute
Wriggled out with help but jeeeeze that is sticky suction!! I stank too... lol..:p
Am hoping that my first big incident marks me as on my way out of beginners (wish I could hurry up and get speed and stamina for the hills though) :(

Re: First Bog Experience!

You will not get much speed and stamina by being stuck on the bog.
It is the bogs that trip you up first and make you face-dive into their murky depths that are really interesting.
Do the peat hags on top of Kinder Scout or Bleaklow count as real bogs?

Re: First Bog Experience!
Knee deep is nothing. It needs to be at least crotch deep or it doesn't count. Panic should only set in when you realise you have to lay on your stomach to sort of wriggle out (difficult) or get your mate to pull you out (after they have stopped laughing and put the camera away...).

Hi Egglett
I hope you are coming to do the 'Grin and Bear it' later in the Year, the guy in third place whilst crossing to Outer Edge Trig went in up to his Armpits:eek: The Bogmonster up there is legendary.
Chest deep is the norm if you don't know which bit of peat to trust...
I will be crossing his terror-tory this Sunday so if you don't hear from me again...
Ian

Re: First Bog Experience!
There's various stories about the grimpen mires on Dartmoor, like
Quote:
Some time ago a man was making his way across Aunehead and was annoyed about losing his way in the boggy terrain up there. As he struggled across the bog he saw a hat lying on the bog, so to relieve his frustration he gave the hat a good kick. Much to his surprise he found the head of a well- known local farmer underneath. Apologising profusely, he asked the farmer if he was all right, to which he replied that he was fine, but he was worried about the horse he was sitting on.

Re: First Bog Experience!
LOL that's funny XRunner... so it seems my girly knee level is only a mild flash of what's to come!
Mind you it's still more fun than the roads.. was out on a road run last night - the only things I had to beware of was broken glass and hoodies.. mind you I had a sexy leg's call from one gang - lol beered up buggers!! HA!!
Well if it was 8-9miles I dont feel so bad about how much tougher I found it then... one day I am hopeing that will feel like it was a nice trott out instead of tough run!

Re: First Bog Experience!
Get over those bog-related fears...enter this.
I can't think of a better way to spend a summer's day. Infact I think I'll do the bike event the day before too!

Re: First Bog Experience!
Now that is funny!!
Unfortunatley I wont be able to go cos I will be having a beach party in Suffolk to celebrate my 40th birthday!!
Now there is a major excuse!! LOL (mind you b'day isnt till the 9th so perhaps I could drive to wales bog snorkle and still be back to the beach in time for the party?!)

Re: First Bog Experience!
It was pretty dry up there on wednesday night as well, wait until we've had a bit of rain, it's funny watching everyone sink.
We'll go along spittlers edge at some point there's some good bogs up there!

Re: First Bog Experience!

Re: First Bog Experience!
Well when I were a lad we 'ad propper bogs. Not like the namby pamby ones you get nowadays. The ones we 'ad would take 20 cart 'orses standing on each others backs before theyd bottom out.
My grandad was 'ard though. Fearless ee was. Used to go straight into 'em on the way t' pit. All youd see is his flat cap going across straight as a die and his pipe breaking the surface to snorkle in air.
I dunno, young uns today. dont kno they're born. ;)

You 'ad cart horses!! You were lucky...We 'ad to use sheep off t'moor, we'd have to catch 'em first with nowt on't feet. Over time some families had kids wit' webbed feet to cope...

Did this race a few years back and came face to face with The Bogmonster - chest deep. Luckily two blokes heard me shouting and pulled me out! Admit it felt like being in a "Lassie" movie for a moment or two.
Been watching that ex-SAS guy on the telly recently and picked up a good tip on how to get myself out in future. The only problem is it involves carrying a stick, which of course will be of no use whatsoever for the remaining 14.5 miles of the route, so it's not really viable.

Re: First Bog Experience!
LOL.. we were talking about exactly that on Weds nights club run.. how to run with a stick!!
I've been studying Bear whatshisnames programme too!

Re: First Bog Experience!
I'm with dazh on this one....
The "dark side" of Bleaklow is awful. As prep for Tanky's last year, a couple of us went up onto Bleaklow for the first time. Needless to say, in the low cloud we strayed off the PW, coming off too early and ending up on the northern side of the top plateau. We ended up among the peaks and troughs of peaty bog land. Tough going underfoot and the head-height mounds of stuff prevented us seeing where we were or which direction to take. We both exhibited as much navigational sense as chickens. Found ourselves waist deep in the mud on many occasions and found it hard work. My feet were black with dirt for days afterwards! :p
An "interesting" hour or so until we found the right route off and towards the Snake Pass.
-
Re: First Bog Experience!
The best route for Tanky's does stray off the Pennine Way as it crosses Bleaklow... you follow the PW until it drops down and crosses a major stream on your left. The Tanky's route goes straight on and I think ends up in the area you are talking about...
-
Re: First Bog Experience!
If I remember correctly, we went up that way, turning off the PW and straight towards Heron rocks. But before we got there we veered off to the left (god alone knows why!) and must have crossed the PW again (!) before ending up on the north side of Bleaklow. We kept seeing a wire fence and thought "that must be relevant to our navigation" for some reason. After what seemed like ages we came to the other side of Bleaklow and saw the rocks towards Mickleden way in the distance. We thought we were out of the woods but it was a nightmare to get to the cairn from there. Ya gotta love it! :D

There's quicker route than that with no Nav problems!;)

Re: First Bog Experience!
Oh, do tell! Last year at Tanky's I followed one of the Glossopdale runners who knew where he was going (overtook him on this bit actually! ;) ).

Re: First Bog Experience!
Not the infamous Dark Peak trod that loops out to the west?.... not convinced!

West?? We are heading to Hernstones not Glossop.
-
Re: First Bog Experience!
I take a route that bisects the wain stones and the hern stones. There is a trod that goes to the west of this I believe....

Re: First Bog Experience!
Errm, now you've lost me! <lost again ;).....>
