List time guys and girls
Mrs Stagger and me are off on a jolly jaunt around the full route on the 21st.
Any others wanting to come along just holla!
Will sort out a mutual time etc in the next week or so but the earlier the better for me - the mother in law is visiting!!! :D

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Based on getting a lift off Mrs. S, I'm in.

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Pretty sure I can make it that day, so count me in.
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Permission from Physio - check
Permission from boss - check
Train times to Edale - check
Could I suggest Mam Nick car park again?
Easy to park the car (FOC on the road side), plenty of room stand and natter, easy to get to from Edale Station.
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Isn't Edale car park easier to get to than Mam Nick!!
It depends if we want to do as we did last year and do the 2nd half first and the first 2nd.
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
I am easy me, if we were to do the second half first, as per last year Mam Nick would be better place to meet.
I also thought Edale car park was expensive & Mam Nick had the FOC option on the road.
I'll shut up now as I am getting the train anyway!

I reckon you could be right there Ian. I ran over Brown Knoll on Sunday and the bog was frozen solid. It made for relatively easy running in fell shoes.
Dave might appreciate some of these though?:)

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Is anyone doing a Recce of Edale in the next week as not sure whether can get on Sunday 21st. PM me if you are {I am Very slow}.
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
I'm likely to recce 14th or 27/28th. Don't know whether to walk it or not, as my black, white and tan friend is only good for 40 mins of running twice a week (he is only 10 months). If I run it I'll need to make sure he is well exercised beforehand.

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
I'm thinking of going round the 2nd half next thursday or friday afternoon if that's any use? I don't know the route though, so would be trying to find it for myself...
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Both sound good drop me a line when you have got a definite time mountain bag. Paul E i am in Edale camping next thursday but since this is with my 8 year old i feel the run may be too hard and far for him.Cheers Matt.

Easy to park the car (FOC on the road side), plenty of room stand and natter, easy to get to from Edale Station.
I might get into trouble for mentioning that there is an overflow car-park to the station which they use for the Skyline Race (and there is no charge for parking);)
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Will be reccing the route sunday 14th. 10:30am from Edale, attempting to find the foc location ST talks about - cheers ST.
Will be heading round with Team Chaos (aka my mutts) at quick walking type pace (gravity assisted downs, walk the ups). PM for contact details.

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
I think it is time to get my quads screaming once again and may just join you Emmi :)

I think you will get into trouble!! It's free if they don't catch you. ;)
On race day this was for marshalls by special permission!
They lay on cheap parking just up the road at a farm.
Zoot is out there tommorrow if running round so watch out for him..

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Watching this and date marked in the diary, good chance i'll be there.

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Reccied on Saturday morning.
Made the dreadful mistake of having a few too many pints the night before in Castleton, and that made it really tough - one of the hardest runs I've done actually. :o
Was OK up to Mam Tor then it all just became hard work, sciatica kicked in, and the last third from Brown Knoll on was just murder: there was some pretty choice language coming out.
Went round with a couple of people who did the race last year and had pretty good memory of the route, so I was a bit lazy consulting the old map, and spent the second half putting all my energy into keeping going. We went wrong a little bit between Mam Tor and Brown Knoll where we followed the fence too far but other than that the best line seemed pretty obvious.
But it was a fine day, and it would be much less obvious in the mist I think - especially the latter section, post-Mam Tor.

.
That just about sums it up. just wait till race day when you are going faster. LS to GK is a real grind

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Me n me dog had a lurvely trot round the first half on sat morning. :) Anyone know stats for this loop. Edale up RR, follow route to Mam Nick then back down? Wondering how much more I have to factor in if I make the full recce next sun. Have to say was chuffed to be heading back to my car after the final slog Mam Nick :o
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
no garmin
but I'd say Mam Nick is 11-12 miles? so over halfway in distance but not in terms of energy & time I reckon
it's not that there's more climbing in the second half (there's possibly less even?) but the terrain is a bit rougher and the going just seems to be a lot slower
-
Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
Yeah, the 2nd half is def further than I remember. Won't be so bad if the ground stays frozen but that bog slog is just horrid. Oh well, lots of bail options at least :D

About right with distance to Mam Nick and all the big climbs out of the way. Yes the second half is tireing but for me takes not much longer (2:32 vs 2:21 in 2007) mind you LS to BK seemed to take hours.

Re: EDALE RECCE - Sun 21st Feb
maybe it was the combination of hangover and sciatica but it felt to me tougher than Tankys. It can't be though: the terrain in general is far less difficult and boggy for a start.

My PB is 35 minutes slower on the ES. I hope to rectify that this year though.
There is more time spent at altitude on the Skyline and you tend to spend half the race running into the wind where on TT it tends to be more across you.

Yeah I'd agree with Ian - you must spend getting on for 2/3 of the Edale Skyline above 500 meters and, apart from the brief drop into Hope, the rest above 400 meters. You also spend a good quarter of the race up to your waist in bog and slime.
(The 'wonderful thing' about the High Peak Marathon is it takes the distance of the Skyline and doubles it, ups the height quota to being above 600 meters for 2/3rds of the time, takes the bog quota and trebles that and as a finishing touch chucks you well and truly into a godforsaken wilderness!!!)

Not a chance, unfortunately. I'll be very lucky if I'm fit for the Skyline.
By the way, well done getting Adam in your team. He's running well at the moment, and I reckon you should get a top 3 finish.

I can see the others making it to a top 5 but not sure I could maintain there speed. Fingers crossed for a pea souper
