Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Just did the Cumbrian Traverse last night, set off around 18:00
That was one dark night, I'll have to check for full moons in future :D
Did it in 12:16, I was at Portinscale bridge at 11:53 but a new barrier is in place, had an attempt at fording the river but half way across common sence prevailed and I trugged back to the A66.
Need sleep now

Nice one Bill. sounds good.
Rather than check out the full moons. Why not do it in daylight?
Or is that me being too sensible again.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse

Good Stuff Baggins.
So you didnt get lost in the sheepfold before the first fell?
Im planning another attempt ( have to recce the sheepfold) in May.
What line did you take off Great End to Sty Head?
-
Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Well done Bill. Didn't realise you were planning it so soon when we bumped into you on Great End last Saturday!

Never found a sheepfold  followed a very good bridleway? above the farm then cut across a field to some steps in the wall and just straight up.
NE ridge off Great End (needs crampons just now)

I thought I knew the route, set off in darkness wandered off the bridlepath stumbled around until I realised I was in a sheepfold, it was when I had to crawl through a sheep hole in the wall that I was off route n completely farouked.Slinking back to my car hoping no one saw me set off:mad:
loads of respect Baggins, I have just got to leap the first hurdle or sheepfold n I will be well on my way:D

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Highlights included
from Coniston Old Man to Swirl How, like running along a frozen stream in places, so much ice.
Crinkles to Styhead when the cloud base lowered and it started snowing, visibility went down to about 10m. On the way to Bowfell went straight up a pointy top rather than than a plateau with jumble of rocks on one side, was about to relocate when thought the shape of this top is familiar, I was on the summit :D
Descent off Great Gable lovely technical challenge, went my BG way (joins the Borrowdale race route lower down) but all trods were banked out, it was the only time I wished I had my crampons on rather than microspikes, had to keep on a higher line to take advantage of the lower angled build up of snow around rocks.
Things that didn't go quite right
Losing my water bottle on Brim fell, this meant I had to drink at a stream using a plastic bag so I got very dehydrated.
Not using a map and compass because I "knew" these fells, lots of time lost due to wanderings on the Caw to Whitless Pike section, dropping down to Wrynose, Cold Pike to the Crinkles and Great End South top to North top
Setting off in the opposite direction from Great Gable summit (brain stopped working :o) realised after about 100m but I really wanted off that summit it was a bit rough up there.
Running in circles trying to find the top of Maiden Moor then giving up only to run over the summit that was 30m from where I was looking.
All in all a great night out and a fantastic route, quite fancy it again in daylight in the summer with a bum bag and road support

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Bit of an epic there Bill... have to admire your navigation... in low cloud I have been known to waste 10 minutes on my route to work:o.
Take my hat off to yer:)

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Excellent run, I'm very impressed.
I've still got a score to settle with that route after dropping out at Crinkle Crags last May and slinking my way back to Eskdale (where I was staying) after 5 hours in the mist. Back in Lakes in early summer so maybe another crack at it then.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Please can anyone confirm if the expectation/requirement for this route is just to visit Long Top in the Crinkles? (as per Langdale) so a route around the others (as per Langdale) is OK, albeit in the opposite direction?
Thanks

The grid reference on Gofar is for Long Top so yes you only need to visit that one. :)

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Thanks for that, hoping to have a go at Easter.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Superb, Bill. I guess this could explain why you seemed a bit tired the following weekend in Wales :D
Belatedly checked out the details on gofar - looks nice.

Just a bit :D
Its a great route, I loved the fact that it stays high up, well worth doing.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
I completed the Cumbrian Traverse unsupported on Easter Monday (5/4/10) in 7:45.
I was staying in West Cumbria and so got the train to Foxfield and walked the 3 miles to Broughton Mills. It had been raining all night so underfoot conditions were very slow, with soft snow higher up, but I was helped considerably by a strong southerly wind.
I forget my compass and with cloud right down navigation was tricky to start with but I did not waste too much time. Fox Haw (between Stickle Pike and Caw) is not on the route but I could so remember if it was so I went over it anyway.
I missed several of the best lines in the low visibility and with snow around and I did not see anyone until the top of Bow Fell after over 4 hours. Climbing Great End was hard work in the deep soft snow with the wind blowing me sideways and by the top I was very cold. I decided not to risk the straight route to Styhead but returned to Esk Hause. I struggled in the snow and wind going up Great Gable but after that the weather improved and with the wind behind it was great.
It was an excellent route and a good day out.

Most impressive Steve and great to see someone fast trying these runs :)
You'd think you were training for something longer ;)

A bit of an understatement, there were about 16 flood warnings in Cumbria on Monday, it was battering down

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Thanks, Bill.
Yes the plan is to have another attempt at the Lakes 24 hour record (78 peaks) in late June. Although i was tired after 8 hours, I would find another 16 hours hard.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
I'm curious... did you set off in the evening because you thought it might take much longer than it did, or was it purely for the sake of the additional challenge? :)

Flipping hell I'm not that slow  :D
It added a bit of spice to it ;)

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Ah, OK... just askin'. ;)

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Well I went back and did the Cumbrian Traverse in daylight.
Took 8:59 in glorious weather, fells very busy until Gable then met no one else.
My wife met me at road crossings pity I didn't pick up my food at three shire stone, had a coke/water and a banana there which I can tell you now is enough energy for two hours.
Started coming round after Honister even managed a sprint to the Moot hall to get under 9 hours (8:58:56)
Will have to do it again some time was a great day out. :D

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Good effort! This is definitely on my list of long runs for the year.

Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Good work Bill,
Was thinking of maybe having a go at this in a couple of weekend's time.
Are there any good resources on the route you can point me to ?
-
Re: Bat Run Cumbrian Traverse
Ah, perfect weather, Bill.
Rather envious.
was this simply for the joy of it or are you building up to.....something.
