Does anyone have the route for winter hill fell race in rivington/bolton in Lancashire. I don't live far from there so if anybody has a route I could do a couple of training runs on that would be great.

Here you go.

That's not a very good map! - has anyone got anything better?
You'll be lucky to find anything better to be honest.
I thick ive reccied it onced and done the race once (last year) and I still dont think I could go from CP1 to the shooting hut (CP2) without the race trod being nice and worn, which It might not be this time of year?
Have it saved on my garmin if that is any use?
Come and have a run with Lostock on a Wednesday night and we'll take you round it in the dark!
If you can send the garmin trace to me (export it as a .gpx file from Training Centre) I can create a proper map from it.
If you go on the Horwich Website here: http://www.horwichrmiharriers.co.uk/articles/?p=1725
You will find a map of the course here: http://www.horwichrmiharriers.co.uk/...terHillMap.pdf
The entry form here: http://www.horwichrmiharriers.co.uk/...lEntry2011.pdf though clearly states that you should not recce the course (at the request of UU).
To be honest, you don't need to recce it really, it's pretty straightforward. Unless you intend on winning it of course.
Anyway, you could simply buy the relevant OS map and map it out yourself. The CPs are all on the entry form.
I have tried to recce this course, but my navigation isn't great. I can reach the relevent checkpoints, but I use the well trodden trails, and it means doubling back a couple of times, is this allowed? It would mean say going to cp2 the shooting hut, running up the trail past cp4 and going down the trail to cp3 then back up to cp 4 etc. I can't go cross country becuause like I said, my navigation skills aren't that great, is this allowed? i understand it could look like cheating if I go past 4 first before 3, but I wouldn't punch it.
No dont do that....its a tough enough race as it is without backtracking.
Im going to say something very irresponsible here..and if you get lost and die please dont try to take me to court.....but....just follow everybody else.
Obviously if your the fastest man in the world this may be a pain having to wait for Rob Hope to catch you up to show you the way, or alternatively if your a back of the pack geezer you may get left behind.
If the cloud isnt down, you'll be able to see runners throughout the first 1/3 of the race which should cover getting you to CP3...then its up the band and bobs your uncle.
If anyone asks, I have never suggested what I just wrote. Have a good'un, its a belter of a race and it certainly was a reality shock last year to me when my wheels fell off on the horrendous climb up the vertical side of winter hill...christ I'd blown up big time!
As Al says, this is a tough enough race without doubling back and if you really need to follow main footpaths, then at the risk of being a bit rude - should you be doing a category A fell race?
However, unless you are planning on winning it (and beating Rob Hope or whoever) or you are going to be right at the back (in which case you probably won't make the cut-off at CP7), you can just follow others. I did last year.
The race lines are pretty much straight between the CPs (which everybody follows) and if I remember right there's a decent path to CP1, a reasonable trod to CP2, then it's straight up and down to CP3, then main path to CP4, then straight down (CP5)and back up to CP6. Bit to CP7 might be a touch tricky (but I did ok last year), but then it's straight up again, and across the tussocks and I think there was a sort of trod that I found to take me to CP8. Then it's pretty much down and you're back on the main footpaths again.
You don't punch in at the CPs either - last year it was marshals taking numbers.
I did a full course recce on monday afternoon and the trods are fairly clear and the running was fast as it was still frozen in parts I hope to go round again with nick leigh on sat or sun, anybody is welcome to tag along (1hr 35 on mon and will be a similar pace again or maybe a bit steadier if a few are out)
I love it!Quote:

Usually works for me.
i'm keen to meet someone who can keep up with a 1.35 recce. if every one is welcome i'll tag along too (for about 5 mins at that pace).
I'll be heading of about the same time, albeit a lot slower.
Top Barn I think.
It'll have to be an idea, it's supposed to pee down on sunday!
