Anyone doing this? - sounds like a great way of avoiding Xmas shopping.
Looks good! A possibility if I can get out of things down here.
I know someone has posted this link up elsewhere, but I thought it might as well go in its rightful place.
A 36-mile tour around Helvellyn, via Sticks Pass and Grizedale Tarn, starting in the eastern fells at Askham, on Saturday 18th December.
I thought it was worth a plug; there isn't much else going on around that time of year and, having entered, I don't want to be a lonely fool...

Sounds interesting! Planning to do Lakeland 100 next year, so shud be good training. Bit of a plodder though - will need all the time methinks!
Will give them a call.
Good to have something long at this time of the year now that Round Rotherham has skipped forward 2 months.
Just hope I can make the cutoff!
Sounds excellent... thanks for the link. I think I'll be entering this, subject to the relevant clearance pass being obtained (notoriously dificult at that time of year) from my significantly better half.
I'll be doing my best to get fit for this. It will be a new challenge for me in this area in winter.
Like to have a go at this too but like Hank I require a pass for the day (or 2). Its that time of year when the other half would not expect to sign a release form and I'd be docile being dragged around the shops.
Good training for the L100
Looks really interesting.
Errm, incidentally, why is it "Tour de Helvellyn"?
Shouldn't it be "Tour of Helvellyn"???
Unless the French have invaded and I've missed it....
Shurely shome mishtake! :closed:
Wheelbase do that tour de Staveley bike race thing as well. Why the need for the French slant?
Anyway. Just plotted a route on memory map and its 36 miles and 7900ft of ascent. Does the elevation sound right by others recconings?
I was trying to count the climb on the OS map
I got 2000m ,, though for a spell I was counting contours as 5m instead of 10
So, something over 2000m
When I firast heard about this I had a look and the route went off to High Row and the coach road then had some road up Thirlmere
I think Sticks and the forest tracks will make a much better route
Isn't Helvellyn a big mountain in Cumberland?
Looks good.
Tracklogs says 2530 metres of climbing.
I've thrown my hat in the ring.
votre chapeau dans l'anneau, please
More - it says Le Tour De Helvellyn - En Hiver
now,
I don't know where Hiver is ,
and I can't find it on any of the OS maps of the Lakes...?
Is there perhaps another Helvellyn (probably pronounced "Elle-vell -eeen-ah ") somewhere in France ?
Its now EU law part of the treaty signed between Cameron and Sarkosy last week along with merged armies and shared aircraft carriers, all long distance fell races to be named in French.
hence metication of races too!
Dear oh dear, this metrication...
Think I'll stick to the L'Angdale Horseshoe.
Hmmm, just noticed this. Very interesting. I was going to do Staffordshire Moorlands Christmas Cracker, but 8 miles? This looks far more tempting and it would make a better job of justifying the imminent excesses of Christmas. Time to crank up the Tracklogs and get plotting, methinks.
Good call to the noor.
nice one ben, will pop it in the diary, sounds a lovely day out in the country.

I ran the loop part today from Glenridding. Only a few snowy sections, but it made me wonder - if we get a good dump before the 18th December can we use skis?
On the off chance is anyone planning to travel up from the south to enter
Speaking of which, les entrées sont ouvertes pour l'horizon d'Edale.... mon entrée est en route...
Strained/torn calf muscle means I'm out of any serious running for 4 weeks so this a no go for me. Shame.
That's bad news, Hank. Get well soon.
I've entered. Is anyone going to make a weekend of it? I'll be staying in the Queen's Head on Friday and Saturday.
By the way, what does "en hiver" mean?
In winter.
Thanks Paul. My only French knowledge is what I learned up to 1979 'O' level, and 'Hiver' rang no bells at all. Surely we must have learned that. Still, memory over 31 years can fade if it's never reinforced. (That's my excuse anyway.)
BTW, forgot to say, thanks to theNoor for the heads up with this. I would never have known otherwise.
Yes Iain, only yesterday by email regarding my entry and how to pay.
I've cranked up the Tracklogs and been plotting - shortest route while following the guidelines. Get ready for 37.1 miles with 8,445 feet of ascent, max altitude 2,461 feet, min altitude 480 feet. I'm imagining far-reaching views and wall-to-wall sunshine, so I can't wait. :w00t:
Certainly, Iain. The A591 is strictly out of bounds, and dead right too, so the woodland trail is what I plotted. There would not be much difference in distance anyway. I'd choose off-road over the monotony of Tarmac any day.
Yes, Iain, Joe replied to my email, saying
"I can't fault your three stated events to prove you are suitably 'certified'."
Luckily he hasn't seen my times - I think I'll be battling the cut-offs again!
