Ta!
this is a tragic yet true and compelling story of a 1960's hero, featured here http://www.globerunner.org/blog/?p=84 (I hope Ive got the link right) I never realised there was a book, I came across him via a Radio 4 play in the 1990's . Unfortunately, I lost my tape copy in a house move. In the blog comments it refers to a new book, possibly coming out in the near future. Hopefully..
alanj - you're quite right - I found this on Amazon - apparently due to be published July 2011.

I'd still love to find a copy of the original book, though!

Fascinating but ultimately tragic story.
The original book is very hard to come by, but you may be interested to know - and please spread the word about it! - that their is a new book, called The Ghost Runner - the man they could not stop, by Bill Jones, published by Mainstream, that came out this week and is available on line/bookshops etc all over the world.
My husband, Roger (Vic) Tarrant, is the Ghost Runner's son, and has co-operated closely with Bill, using his Dad's running diaries/training logs and correspondence, and Bill has interviewed so many people, and has produced an amazing true story - a great read.

Hello Sue - I've just finished reading the 'Ghost Runner' and have to say that it really, really moved me. In my opinion what happened to John Tarrant casts a long, guilty shadow over British sport.
For anybody who hasn't read the book, I highly recommend it. It is the story of John Tarrant of Salford Harriers who when asked if he had ever taken money for sport honestly revealled that as a not particularly good boxer he won £17 in prize money.
For being honest he was doomed. The book tells his story. It is a story of a working-class bloke in a fight that he couldn't win against a load of chinless toffs running British sport. As the ghost he gatecrashed races all over Britain (winning many of them) and in South Africa he contributed to the toppling of apartheid by running as the only white man in outlawed black races, a "ghost among ghosts" to quote the book.
John Tarrant was a real life hero and his story would make for an astonishing film.
Just got back from a w/e away and received delivery of said book from Amazon - looking forward to reading it now.
Finished the book a couple of months ago now, that man had dedication, He will always be an inspiration in my life, thanks to Bill and Johns family for sharing his story!!
Just got this book for my birthday. Will be starting reading it tonight
Finiashed it last night on Kindle, excellent book and well worth the read.
Enjoy :)
Not me 'ard as Tarrants nails.............sniff...sniff... ;)
Actually it made my blood boil at times AAA, BAAB, RRC, you ought to hold your head in shame. You were a disgrace to sport.
