Hi Guys,
This morning at 0545Hrs when I was just starting my Petzl run I noticed a very bright object in the sky. I thought it was a plane at first but it was not really moving. It was in the South Eastern direction... any ideas... was it a satelite or planet?? Thought there might be a budding astronomer in our midst.

Venus or Saturn maybe - see this interactive chart
It's Venus. The other obvious one is Jupiter in the SSE in the early evening.
Edit: Saturn is also around in the dawn, appearing as a reasonably bright planet, but Venus is much, much brighter (the morning star) and would fit your description as a plane with landing lights on.
Jupiter is still close at the moment
Im pretty certain it's Venus but not certain .....noticed it the last few mornings !
There were 3 blokes on camels who stopped me on the way to work this morning asking for directions. They were very interested in the star for some reason as well :confused::rolleyes:

It is Venus, which of course makes it a bright planet. You should be able to see the crescent shape with the naked eye. Venus is the same size as the earth.
Jupiter's worth a look at through binos (say between 6 and 8pm), especially in this cold air, you'll be able to see the 4 largest or Galilean, moons, which are 2000 to 3000 miles across

Tis Venus for sure seen it every morning this week at around 0430 while running on Scout Scar with me dog, Have to say the sky`s this week both morning and night have been Fantastic, British summer time who needs it?

Sorry,number four was a joke!
The whole question has now got me very intrigued. Having looked further it would seem it must be Venus. I had not really realised that so much was actually visible.

The Space Station is also very bright, like Venus but moves across the sky quickly in just a few minutes. The planets move against the background stars very slowly over months, hence the name (Greek for wanderer, also a song by Dion and the Belmonts).
Jupiter is currently visible in the UK in the early evening.
Your anus is obviously much weaker and so far away.
It's an interesting hobby, I was swept up as a boy in the Gemini and Apollo programmes in the '60s and used to watch Skylab fly over in the 70s till it crashed near Perth in Australia. Even stayed up through the night to watch Apollo 11 land on the moon in '69, exciting days.
I think I saw Venus last night.
Either that Or grouse had left his shed light on.
Maybe it was Uranus?

Months later and with the light nights approaching.... I have discovered the Google Sky Map app fro my Htc phone (other providers are available). Thanks for all of the advice
For the last week, during my early evening 4 miles dog walk, I have been watching Jupiter and Saturn getting closer and closer together.
On this evenings walk, Sods Law, for the "Great Conjunction" it was cloudy. Bugger!
That's a shame. They were very close together yesterday - certainly in the same field of view when viewed through binoculars.
There was a gent talking about this on the wireless the other day. Apparently Kepler was the first person to map out the travel of the planets and there was a conjunction during his time (17th century). He planned out when future conjunctions would happen - including this one. And this was the best alignment of Jupiter and Saturn since the one that Kepler observed.
