Does anyone know the route for this race? (running for the first time on May 29th)
Thanks
Yep, its Helvellyn and the Dodds :P
Anyone...?
Is it just a there and back up Clough Head and along the ridge? (Starts at Threlkeld Cricket Ground).
BG route from threlkeld to helvellyn & back (basically)
Great, thanks Woodzy.
We ran this route the Wednesday before emmilou's BG. I've just had the map out too. It looks a long 11.5ml!
Ive got it about 6 mile from Clough head summit to Helvellyn Summit, so by my reckoning its about 14 in total, could be wrong like but it seems a fair bit more than 11.5....
Might jump on this race if I'm in any fit state.
Ye defo 15mile, should be a very good runnable route, mind you its still quite a way!!! Pacing will be key me thinks, I almost wish I wasnt doing the marathon the weekend previous and have a proper go at it.....
Hopefully meet some new forumites
plenty of stood marks on the race line yesterday and there were a couple of runners ascending Clough head as I was finishing my run.
would also like to know which peaks the route goes over and where it starts and ends at?
Hi,could anybody tell me any details about the race on the 29th?got a decent idea about the route but wanted to know what sort of mileage the route covers??:)
In the Fellrunner home page it is given as 15 miles and about 4500feet. A new race venue, probably out and back I would guess.

Is this about a 1960s band?
I'm in. My first fell race proper. I've been up in lakes for a couple of months and ran most of leg 2 (to Helvellyn) last week in grim weather.....and loved it.
So what was it like? I was up at Castlerigg Farm for the weekend, all set to do this. And the car wouldn't start :(
Didn't go either. Hungover after watching the champ league final. I did just make it out up from Dunmail to have a look at start leg 3 of BG, couldn't get moving and ended up turning back at calf crag - very poor effort and will have to make up for it tomorrow....
I was so glad I did this today-the weather was awful in the morning and I nearly didnt go either but it had cleared by the start time and completely dry for the race. We did have horrific winds to deal with though and running into it on the way out just made things harder. Its a cracking, lovely grassy route but dont be fooled into thinking that its a nice ridge run with a pleasant descent-the course undulated all the way and the climbs on the return leg felt even worse with tired legs! Big thankyou to the organisers, marshalls (who nearly got blown away) and of couse the brill ladies from Threlkeld cricket club who provided us with a wonderful "cricket tea" afterwards. Dont know about anybody else but im KNACKERED this was a much harder race than I expected but also really good!!!:D
Thanks to all at Keswick for a cracking race. Yes it was challenging, yes I wondered why I was doing it at times when being blown about by gale force winds but the thrill of the decents and the satisfaction of finishing is better than any self administered chemical! Must commend and thank the ladies and gents who provided the sandwiches and cakes, they were brilliant and a fab post race fuel for tired runners. All in all a great day out, do it next year if you can.
Raise was down as a checkpoint on map, does anyone no why there were no marshalls there???
There was something on the race information board at the cricket club which said Raise was not a checkpoint this year. I think the RO was worried that the weather was quite bad, particularly for the marshalls, and possibly this was why he decided to cut it out. He had at one point thought about making the race a shortened version, or possibly turning the backmarkers around at Great Dodd - in the end the weather came good. Coming back from Helvellyn I did start to contour around Raise, which would have saved a few minutes at least, but then worried I might be cheating; had the RO said, "unmanned checkpoint" or "not a checkpoint"? I couldn't remember, so went up there anyway!
I attempted to contour round, buggered it up, ended up running the wrong way for 10 minutes, which is a worrying testament to my nav skills as it was on the way in on an out and back course. d'oh
I was on an out and back reccy of BG leg 2 from Dunmail. All the runners passed me on the way up to Helvellyn. I got all enthusiastic and gave a "well done," "go for it" "good effort" to every single runner in the field. I turned round at Stybarrow Dodd and then realised that the race route was out and back as well - so I got to encourage everybody all over again.
It was really windy and I had about five layers on - I thought I was hallucinating when I saw one of the racers running bare chested! Brrrr!
Thinking of doing this on Sunday. It doesn't seem to get much attention on here and fields seem quite small for a Lakeland weekend race. Is it just the proximity to other higher-profile races?
A few of us are up in the Lakes this weekend (celebrating a 40th birthday) and are contemplating doing it, but it's all relative to how much beer is consumed on Saturday night :D
The birthday girl will probably skip up Clough Head in a heartbeat and be on her way back from Helvellyn while I'm still labouring over Great Dodd .... perhaps a gentle walk up Latrigg would be a better idea!
new record from karl bell, smashed it
