Just got this. Been told mine is related to poor mobility in the ankle and lower leg muscles, also possible collapsing of arches. Been told to stretch lots and buy those superfeet insoles or whatever they are called.
Just replacing my road shoes to a more supportive shoe and lots of stretching has already reduced the pain considerably.
Been told to keep running because until I sort out my flexibility it will just keep coming back, even after rest
Re: Peroneal tendinitis....
I know what you need: a long, cold, boggy night run in the Peak District. Early March maybe. Do you the power of good.
Re: Peroneal tendinitis....
Cheers Iain just what I wanted to hear that, especially as I've got a number of races coming up very soon. Grouse what your basically saying is to just crack on with it which is also what I want to hear. Laters

I meant Iain, but good luck with it :)

Just saw this thread and thought I'd share my experience with this problem - which is lots. I developed this early in 2008 and although I hate to say it, it's something that really doesn't go away and you have to manage - at least that's my situation. For me, it was definitely poor mobility in the lower leg, specifically the peroneus longus, that caused the problem. It got so tight I got micro tears in the connective tissue between the muscle and the tendon itself, the result being that my whole achilles area got really swollen and in fact crepitus set in .... this had me going to physio at the local hospital and took ages to settle down.
I think when people talk about peroneal tendinitis and peroneal tendonitis they mean the same thing. The peroneal tendon is very extensive and if you have problems, you'll feel it referring everywhere, under your metatarsals, ankle, the lot. It's mean. It does respond very well to deep sports massage, but you have to be careful, particularly in the area around the retiniculum - the "strap" that holds the whole caboodle to the lateral side of your foot. Blood supply here is terrible, so a regime of combined heat/ice helps a great deal. I used to get up 15 minutes earlier, nuke my heat bag and then sit eating my breakfast with foot up, alternating heat/ice. Ibuprofen gel (10% stuff like Ibulieve) also helps.
I was very fortunate as my missus was training to be a sports massage therapist at the time this developed, so she's become a bit of an expert on peroneal tendon treatment. I hasten to add she's qualified now, but I still have to have regular maintenance. For instance, I biked on Saturday and ran 13 miles on Sunday .... that bloody muscle siezed up again and if she hadn't worked it, I bet it would have reappeared.
So I hope this helps. BTW, rolling a golf ball under you foot also helps relieve the pressure. PM me if you need to hear any more ..... hope it clears up quickly for you.

Re: Peroneal Tendonitis??
According to Noakes X-rays will not show anything abnormal in stress fractures in up to 57% of cases if the X-ray is done within 3 weeks of the onset of symptoms. This sounds like a stress fracture, particularly with the inability to take weight, and the focal tenderness. Ideally you would be seen in your local fracture clinic.
Re: Peroneal Tendonitis??
Yeah but what am I supposed to do Ive been to the doctor and he seemed quite convinced that its not a stress fracture but more to do with tendonitis, anyway am not going to run on it until its healed, whatever it is.
Re: Peroneal Tendonitis??
? pop into your local A+E?
Re: Peroneal Tendonitis??
A bone scan will generally show up a stress fracture. I though the peroneus tendon was on the side of the foot?

Yeah but it also runs behind the fibula.

Thanks, big Gray Man - I learn something new every day!
Re: Peroneal Tendonitis??
The tendon of peroneus longus startes about 1/3 to 1/2 way up the tib and inserts into the 1st met and navicular on the planter aspect of the foot. Thereforer is quite long and has several bends. Its main job is to planterflex the 1st ray joint to stop the big toe being pushed upward by ground reaction forces.
Peroneal tenonitis can be occur anywhere along the tendon not just on the side of the foot.
It can be caused by the foot not pronating enough (or supinating to easily) therefore peroneus longus has to work hard to keep the big toe on the ground. Or by over pronating which stretchess the tendon esp if the 1st ray joint is flexible.

I can endorse this. I had peroneal tendonitis hit me several years ago and at various times I felt it along the whole length of the tendon, including all the insertion points under my foot. It can be very nasty. Funnily enough, as I moved onto off-road running it became much less of an issue.
I have my own personal formula for curing PT, but it's no miracle - basically a combination of massage (lots), ice and heat. I also found anti-inflammatory gel relieved the symptoms well, partic. the 10% stuff.

But the pain ive got is not really on the tendon but on the bone, theres a point on the bone where if I press hard enough theres a sharp pain, and its the same pain if I try to run or walk for more than a few yards. What I'am concered about is that Ive got a stress fracture that was not noticed on the x-ray. My doctor said that a stress fracture of the fibula would be noticed on an x-ray, but am not convinced, does anyboby have any thoughts.
Went for my first run tonight in five weeks, wasnt sore really at all, no sharp pains at least, so can't be a stress fracture, amazing that ive not lost all that much cardio fitness, a suppose a testament to how fit a was before a stopped.

Sounds good - also sounds like we will never really know what it was - I still have my money on a stress fracture of the shaft of the fibula - 5 weeks of not running would heal most of these. Good luck.
