i am doing this race as part of our club championships.. would like a map of course. is there one posted on the internet anywhere?
also is it as tough as it looks!!!!
This race really killed me the first year I did it, it is a very tough 10 mile or so race. Saying that I had only done 10 mile on the roads.
Just prepare for the sting in the tail on the way up to hole in't wall.
Did it last year and did not suffer as bad as first year, due to being a little more experienced and knowing what to expect.
No map but route goes
Glenridding
Catsye Cam
Helvellyn
A point in between
Grisdale Tarn
St Sunday Crag.
May Also be a checkpoint in the valley
Then back to glenridding via Hole in't wall
Some body who knows may be a little more descriptive
Jamie
I have done this twice and found it the toughest fell race I have done - although I have not done the Ben or other epics. This has more climbing than the Ben over similar distance. If I am injury free this year I would like to go up and do it again, cracking route although I have still to find a good line off St. Sunday Crag! Killer of a last ascent up Grisedale brow which is a flank but hellish steep after 8.5 miles or so. I will try a plot a rough route on the O/S Memory map - PM me with email addy and I will forward.
have pm you hope it arrived
Attachment 293
Should be a link to elevation profile I hope
its a very hard race
i suggest turkish delight
May as well post route here also - not very Hi-Res but have full size Memory Map file if anyone wants it so they can pick holes in my route finding - I accept no responsibility for any runners getting lost!!!!
The toughest race I've run. Did the entire final climb on my hands and knees, with a quiet lie-down after each count of twenty.
The valley checkpoint is at the south western corner of Elmhow Plantation, by the bridleway. I headed almost due north downhill to it off St Sunday, following a pair who crossed my path at right angles and seemed to disappear over a precipice. Turned out there was a green funnel between the cliffs which led straight down onto the open hillside.
The race took me so long that the marshal at the finish asked me if I'd retired. I said no, but after that race I was thinking about it.
Anyone know the route for this one?
Cheers
Cheers for the map Ady.
Jamie, Is Grisedale as tough as Sedbergh?
Are you doing it/staying on the Sat night for a few pints?
Carlpj
No Grisedale is easier but not much easier, it is a lot rockier.
I reckon time wise about 20minutes shorter. Still a hell of a lot of climb mind you. With a real kick in the arse at the end.
Try to find the short scree run off St Sunday Crag, I used it last year on race day, but have never found it since. Perhaps the organisor put it there specially.;)
My legs are killing me today, Im going easy now till Grisedale. Not even thinking about another long run.
No Map, No Compass
Do you mean my scree run route as previous post, or do you mean the route on Ady's map.
Cheers
It is Ady's map which is wrong, it shows a straight line from the top of St Sundays to somewhere on the valley side and this goes over the cliffs. The two grid refs I have given are safe points to drop into the valley beyond the cliffs (though there are cliffs between these two points!).
The scree run is a good line if you can find it and it is beyond the cliffs and not on Ady's map. It is easy to find if you know where to look!
Yeah, I spent ages looking for it whilst out walking.
I used it in last years race, but that was all a blur. Is it a long scree run or pretty short lived. I dont seem to remember being delivered safely to the valley floor by it.
It's pretty short - 100m or so - and very narrow. Once you get to the bottom of it its steep slippy grass all the way to the plantation. Best to take a sledge with you or some grass skis. No idea what the best line is - the straightest I should think.
are we now seeing Dick Dastardly tactics applied to fell races, diverting the competition over lethal drops? ;-)
I'm doing this race and I'm now a little bit scared :(
Sorry, didn't mean to scare anyone.
I just didn't want anyone who had never done the race to follow Ady's map too literally coz they would end up in trouble.
The way off St Sundays is easy to find, just follow the path till you get to the end of the cliffs and then drop down the one of the gullies I suggested earlier. Anythinng that looks like a cliff probably is a cliff so avoid. The good routes down look like they go right from the top, so there is no problem recognising them.
Enjoy and don't look at the profile Ady posted, that really is scary!
Ill try
Was a rough guide to give an idea of the race route, not a GR accurate course map. I have never had a good line off St Sunday (although never dropped off any cliffs!). There are no markers so you can pick your own way off, whichever way you choose it will hurt your quads like hell. Sorry if it has caused any concerns. Unfortunately I cannot attend this year due to work stuff which is a bugger as I was looking forward to it - would have a liked to have challenged the 2 hour mark, best is 12 mins over this. Hope you all enjoy it and the weather is kind enough to allow the fantastic views.
That is great running Ady, I've done this twice. First time I did it I was 3rd from last.
Last year I managed 2hrs48mins so Im hoping to beat that this year.
I'm up for this race this year. The Ben next year.
It's a pity it clashes with the Ben as both events are good for different reasons. The Ben is a better weekend but I think Grisedale is a tougher and more interesting race.
If visibility is poor make sure you keep running South all the way from Helvellyn to Grisedale Tarn ~ it's easy to follow the South West track leading down to Wythburn if you're not concentrating.
Yes, your legs will hurt before you reach the valley bottom coming off SS Crag, and yes your legs will hurt all the way to the top of the next climb.
It's all worth it though for the excellent tea and cakes in the village hall afterwards.
Enjoy!
The year I was 3rd from last was such a wake up call for me,
I had hardly visited the lakes when I ran that never mind ran or walked there. I tagged (pardon the pun) onto a woman who was just as knackered as me (one of moo's friends I later found out). Luckily between us we figured out the route. It was a foggy day and I would not have had a clue otherwise.
I then started to do some long runs and got used to map reading and got to the lakes more.
To be honest it was quite frightening especially when tired.
Doing this Thursday with huw.... if anyone fancies coming along pm me!
Has anyone got a GR for the last checkpoint, might head up on Saturday to check the course out if my cold has cleared up by then.
me and daz had fun last year,i nearly got blown off the side of swirral edge :p
shame i cant do it this year, love this race
CP at rivercrossing (Grisedale Beck):
NY36965 15070 (you can see crossing point as you descend)
Think this was the last one although it could have just been marshals at the river crossing. Previous was top of St Sunday Crag. More feedback should confirm.
I think the last checkpoint is the hole in the wall after climbing back up the valley but don't quote me on that
I would think there would be a checkpoint at Hole in the wall or you wouldnt have to do the nasty climb up there!
Coming up to the lakes this weekend fancy doing this can you email your route ta.
My lakes running experience is very limited, it's very difficult for me to juggle family commitments with driving out there. Nearly all of my racing so far this year has been on the North York Moors.
I know I'm going to struggle with this race, but I've really got to do it (and more) if I ever want to improve and be good enough to complete next years 3 Peaks race, which is my goal.
I'm going to the FRA Nav course next month to get some practical knowledge of map reading. Just have to use my wits in the meantime. Oh dear...
