Is it me or is one of the GR's wrong in the magazine where it describes the route? "Fell gate at 693207" is way off the route! Any help here where it really goes? I'm in the lakes tommorrow till Tues so may look at it...

Hi Tim, we went round it a few weeks ago, and that grid ref must be a misprint. But it became irrelevant as most of it seemed to be on private land except the open fell itself which is pretty obvious where to go.
Can anyone give a description of the terrain the Dufton race goes over? What is the descent like? Any shoe suggestions?

It's mostly very fast grassy running with one short steep ascent and steep descent bit. The descent is very rabbit-holey, and if you don't fall down a hole you'll probably trip over a rabbit itself- there were millions when i went there, though the avatar ate one, so that's one less.
I thought it might go along High Cup Nick, apparently not, so it will be a surprise for me. :confused:
Keep those hounds under control H, eating the rabbits !:p

Oh bugger i must have missed the bit about not reccying it. Most of it was on private land so we just stayed with the footpaths and looked at the other bits through pretend binoculars. So basically, take no notice of anything i've said about the route. I stand by my word on rabbits though :o
Great race, what a start, eyeballs out or what, seemed like 5 miles in through the fields to the finish. Well done to all involved in organising, and all who ran. and the weather was spot on.
I agree, Twilk. Did anyone near you drop some litter after the race?
As a mater of fact yes, but the guilty party will be re-united with the litter at a later date, ashamed to say it was a club mate.

Ran this yesterday at the Dufton Show and really enjoyed it. Am not familiar with these fells at all with my only knowledge being of the fell poets expedition a while back, but it was a cracking route with stunning scenery and was very well managed. I know it was a championship race a couple of years ago so many will be familiar, but Id recommend this for a pleasant day out next year. Especially if, like me, your steadily building fitness levels and have some youngsters who are keen to run. I thought the junior races were also great routes and my two were delighted with their runs.
Big thanks to Morgan Donnelly for organising it and doing a great job only a couple of days after he returned from a terrific run in Colorado.

As with most "show races" this is a hard fast short course which can be punishing.
Chuffed to finish 40 seconds up on last year but gutted that I yet again went out too quick and blew up. When will I learn....................

Any sign of results? Forgot to stop watch at finish (as per usual...)

I travelled up to the 150th Dufton Show.
What a great show with a fell race thrown in for a fiver.
Fast runnable race with only one short steep bank. Thanks to all who put this event on.
It wasn't looking too good on the drive up the M6, it was absolutely lashing down. Should I just turn around and do Pendleton again instead?
Thankfully curiosity got the better of me and I ticked off another race I hadn't previously done....in what turned out to be half decent weather.
The show is mainly agricultural and the setting is stunning in a lovely unspoilt area.
Dufton pike is the prominent hill seen from the show field. The race is pretty much a run across fields then up and around the Pike on a steady climb which soon turns into a hands on knees slog. This is rewarded with a cracking descent down the shoulder of the fell and back across the fields to the show field.
Congratulations to Daz Kay making it 3 wins in a week, the other 2 being Pendle 3 peaks and Horrick Hill. Cracking running by Phil and Jim Davis pushing Daz all the way.
Top runner Vic Wilkinson finished 1st lady and 4th outright.

Really enjoyed this today.
Arriving at the show in the morning it was a little cool, but soon warmed up and i was positively sweating during my warmup.
I reckon perhaps 35 on the start line. It was a quick start out of the showfield and i was somewhat taken aback to find myself well back, perhaps 17-20th... but not to panic, i knew i'd pull some of that back once we started going uphill through the fields.
And so it proved, and by the time i reached the climb proper up the shoulder of Dufton Pike, i was in a group of 4 battling for perhaps 9-12th place.
Unfortunately the efforts of the past week caught up with me and i was unable to really kick on from here as i'd have liked, and was a big job just to maintain position, and it was with some relief that i got over the summit still in contention.
Given the struggle going up, i was surprised and delighted to more than hold my own on the fast descent down the shoulder, pulling back a guy who had been way in front. Although on the fast run back through the fields i dropped a couple of places to stronger guys.
Finished in around 40:25 and i think i was 10th.
Given the heavy week i've had it was a pleasing runout... i felt a bit heavy-legged off the start line, and couldn't get moving up the steep climb, but other than that i felt pretty good, perhaps could have ran 60-90secs quicker on totally fresh legs, but not much more than that.
A good race... up through fields, round the back of the pike on a mixture of good and rough footpath, a steep climb up one shoulder, a technically quite easy descent down the opposite shoulder, then a thrash back through fields and woods to the finish.
One of the fast guys from Ambleside won, Carl Bell of Keswick 2nd. Victoria Wilkinson won the ladies by a considerable margin and was i think 4th overall.
Think I'm heading over for this next weekend. I have no record of my PB, as the results for 2009 are not there, I'll want to be under 45m.
The weather is very good in the Eden valley, I'm looking at it now. I bet if I was on discord I could upload a picture. Light breeze and not too humid, perhaps a bit hot come race time. I've brought PB racers.

Its a good race.... only the one steepish climb, and the ridge descent is fast but probably not steep/technical enough for your liking.
A long run out through uphill fields, and then back down through the fields.
A nice show as well. I stayed in Dufton a month or so ago for the weekend, it is absolutely lovely.

I decided not to get held up or elbowed in the woods or the narrow gates at the start, so had to get off nice and fast. This meant setting off at 400 pace, but it worked well enough and I got clear, nobody went with me so I was all alone for the first half km. I couldn't catch anyone up going round the pike due to the wind. Oddly I overtook 3 people on the climb. The new descent is not as good as the old one, it's just too easy and feels hard as hell underfoot. The first lady slowed slightly on the last ramp up out of the woods so I decided to make a dash for it. I knew it was going to hurt and it had to be a sudden burst or she might just go with me. I got her and was in terrible O2 debt as I crossed the line. Finished in about 42.30 so well under my target of 45m. Good show, lots of pretty women on horses.
Well done - sounds like a good day was had. I have only been to Dufton once - for the High Cup Nick race. It is a lovely spot.Quote:
