Early morning runs - a waste?
Righto now the mornings are a bit warmer!
If I want to up my mileage a bit I could get up early like 5.30am and do an easy 5 miler before getting home, showered and off to work. What I want to know is does anyone else do this and would it be of more/less benefit than staying in bed and resting. Are they just junk miles?

Re: Early morning runs - a was
Better than hot sweaty runs at 5.30pm!! Mind you 5.30 am is a bit early...

Re: Early morning runs - a was
Avoid running in polyester like the plague if it's hot; I'd forgotten that it holds in heat and sweat, allowing you to stew in your own juices :(

Just back from my EMR.
Best time of the day to enjoy the peace and quietness of the countryside and, as a bonus, the weather is perfect.

Re: Early morning runs - a was
my favourite time of day to run. How rewarding and uplifting having a shower afterwards :)

Re: Early morning runs - a was
No such thing as junk mileage - I think you should do as much as you want to (up to the point where your body can't take it anymore!) I much prefer running in the morning to the evening although the early get-ups do become a bit of a struggle sometimes. Theres rarely any wind, its rarely humid, its quieter and there aren't annoying yappy dogs all over the place.

They are fine once you get going.

Re: Early morning runs - a was
Sorry all, not for me! It's my worst time as it takes me AGES to get going properly. I see it in my run times too as they're much slower as opposed to afternoon/evening. Nice time of year for it I know but I need to be up 'n' about for at least an hour before. Everyone's different I guess....
Makes the prep for morning races "interesting" I must say....;)

When I was a roadrunner and doing 100 miles a week I ran 6 miles every weekday at 6.20am.
Often in the dark. I then did another run, session or race in the evening. It certainly worked for me.
It might be tough when you start but you will soon get into a routine.

I'm a morning person and fundamentally like running early, but I agree with the above. I find it very hard to do quality sessions unless I've been out of bed and am completely "warmed up" for at least 90 minutes (and I'm not getting up at 4am to be ready for 5.30!) I agree there's no such thing as junk miles, though, but on days where I want to run quality sessions or really push myself (intervals, etc.), I either run again later in the day or leave the session until evening.

Re: Early morning runs - a was
I tend to run in the mornings more often than not. It's the only time I'll run. Plus you get things like the dawn chorus to listen to, and all manner of other wildlife. Enjoyed early winter mornings, I'd have owls for company :)

Re: Early morning runs - a was
if you can get up early , its truly the best time to run
when my sleep pattern is all to cock i love nothing more than running at 3/4/5 am in a morning , done lots of my tempo runs , shorter but quicker.
I keep badgering AJ to get a dog so that i can take it for an early run which would be perfect
but its hard work to do it day in day out

It would have to be on top of a fell somewhere.

Re: Early morning runs - a was
Would it be covered by FRA rules? And would safety kit be mandatory?

Re: Early morning runs - a was
We had a bright idea last night, thought we'd set the alarm and go for a short run before work this morning in the lovely countryside, what could be better?!
Unfortunately it didn't go to plan, the alarm went off, OH muttered his legs were a bit achey and i moaned my back wasn't good, so like a couple of geriatrics we huddled back under the duvet and had an extra half hours sleep :o

Re: Early morning runs - a was
Early morning runs have done me no harm. Just put my running stuff on now before I get in bed to watch BB. Saves me a few minutes in the morning hunting for gear to run in. (Note- I havent got my running shoes on in bed)
Running in the morning, making the day a two run day helps when you need to increase mileage.
