Lakeside - Gummers How 21 June
I hear on the grapevine that there are still a couple of boats free for this Saturday's race if anyone is interested.
For those of you not in the know, this is a fantastic event that originally started in the 1920s. It starts from behind the Lakeside Hotel from where you have to row over Windermere before running up Gummers How.
For those not wanting to compete, it is a great spectator's event as no matter how good a runner someone is, their skill doesn't always transfer to rowing. The starts of both the team and individual race are normally chaos.
The organiser's details are on the FRA fixture list page.

Re: Lakeside - Gummers How 21
You're right its a great one to watch. Never done the individual race. The fear of getting stranded in the middle of the lake is just too much for me! Think i'll come to spectate rather than compete!
Re: Lakeside - Gummers How 21
I'll be there. Am entered in the team race, but fear that my injury may make me the weak link! I only do it for the free bottle of ice cold bud you get handed upon crossing the finish line!
Bet you've been hard at it on the rowing machine Harry, eh?
Re: Lakeside - Gummers How 21
Seems like it was another great success.
Preston Harriers joined in last year, I think for the first time. We were there agian in force this year. If you want to see Ian Holmes on umbrella duty, go to our report of the weekend!

I couldn't make it but yes certainly looks a good thing to participate in or even watch :)
Re: Lakeside - Gummers Howe
You are right Emmi. A great one to watch.
It is on the evening of the Tebay race this year, so anyone coming up for the weekend should come along and enjoy a beer on the lawn of the hotel and enjoy the sight of fellrunners showing off their rowing skills. Normally hilarious!

I am indeed going. Got a place in the YHA. Ive said i'll be a reserve since its only 3m/900. If its straight up and down kinda stuff i should be able to do that but i cant let myself take the place of someone who is injury-free and wants to do it.

Yes it is pre entry and is full as far as I know?? A lot of the Preston lot are going up. Could still be worth checking though
It may well still be the worth the trip as I'm told it's a great race to spectate.
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
Give Dave the organiser a bell to find out if anyone has dropped out even if you've heard it is full. You might be able to get in on the night if you speak him first.
It is worth a trip to see as it is a fantastic laugh to watch. All these normally svelt and stylish runners thrashing their oars about and getting frustrated is a hoot. You'll enjoy it even if you don't get in.
Ian Holmes is going for another win even after running Tebay on Saturday afternoon. I'll be along to support you all.
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
Aye its full.
I think im reserve for the reserve whos reserve for the 1st reserve.:D
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
Well there may be controversy today over Tebay but I think there needs to be a steward's enquiry over this year's rowing!
Ian Holmes made a clean start across the lake then his three best challengers all got tangled together. If I didn't know better I reckon Ian paid one of them off to sabotage the others.
Anyone visiting the Lakeside hotel later on this year should watch out for Holmsey cashing in his prize of a night's B&B for two at the hotel with either Nick Sharp, Tim Austin or Darren Kay. Then we'll know there was something funny going on.

I only went to watch ! Then ended up doing the individual and the team races  As you well know alastair rowing has never been my favourite since i hit that yacht ! One year it might go right for me:o
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
This was bloody brilliant!!!!!
Sod grasmere etc.....gummers how is the place to be with 125 quid up for grabs!
Ian homles was so lucky to get away with not getting tangled in that mess at the start, as soon as he got away it was pretty much game over.
But i must say, for some reason he was looking a tad tired!
Darren Kay obviously loved is so much that baggin 2nd place in the individuals and then going on to have another go and win the team race as well.
Preston put a ladies team out for the teams race (First all ladies team ever;)) and two in the individuals.
Really good event, and its quite nice to go to a right posh hotel and oretty much take over the garden with the people in the hotel staying over looking down from their rooms in disgust!
What an event!

Not true - we had a ladies team 3 years ago - i think we wouldn't be remembered for anything but the entertaining rowing though :o.
Fantastic event to take part or watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a big yacht mind you. At least 15 foot long and Windermere is only a small pond. Good effort last night, the whole thing was great entertainment.
I'll be back next year!
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
Anyone doing this this year? Three of us from Ambleside are having a splash across the lake. Went out today and had a little practise row, dodging the yachts (might well be a full blown row if we cock it up on saturday). I've not watched it before, but from the sound of things I don't think you can really prepare for the mad scramble at the start.
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
I've got a place in the individual race. I'll be there to cheer all the teams on.
At least in the team race you know which boat is yours before the start. The chaos is all part of the fun. You'll have a great laugh.
Re: Lakeside Gummers Howe
This has caught my eye and as we're in the lakes for the GLR can we get over to watch this afterwards?
Is anyone else going after the GLR?

Would recommend it as a great event to watch. The finish is 10 yards from the hotel bar.
