I know that running the length of a well-trodden tourist path is hardly a fell running 'challenge', but it's something I fancy doing one weekend over the summer. I'm hoping to cover the 84 miles in 2 long days, or 3 shorter ones depending on which of my friends I can persuade to come along with me. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone know of any good places to camp along the way?
No but it's a great idea.
Let us know how it goes. :) I could be sorely tempted to do that myself in the late summer...

Good effort............... but I reckon he'll enjoy a BG a bit more than that!
Pretty sure he carried the lot as he showed all he carried at the start of the first video - he's currently/finshined the Mongol Rally this summer - quite the nutter!

Yep, carried everything. City centre bits are a bit boring, the middle bit over the fells is the most fun, but its a good route (except the cows, they are evil up there).
Looking forward to trying the BGR soon, hopefully unsupported, if not straight away then soon after...

Only just seen this thread - I 'ran' Hadrian's Wall in May 07 (minus the last 12 miles) with several others. We were rasing funds for the local primary school and as we live within a mile of the wall we decided to use it as a fundraising challenge. We invited others to join the three of us who were there from start to finish and split the route into 5 to 7 mile sections so others could join us for parts of it. We set off from Bowness on Solway at 0500 and arrived at the Primary School in Wylam (70 miles later) at about 8pm. We didn't fancy the last chunk into Newcastle and as we had reached our homes, we stopped! The most scenic section was just before Housesteads but perhaps the most enjoyable was around 20 of us doing the penultimate and last leg into the village. We have jokingly called this our 'flat Bob Graham' since and at 15 hours, we felt quite chuffed. We had road support who met up with us at the start of all the sections and so we ate and drank loads. Route finding was simple! We thought we might have seen Joss Naylor half way at Steel Rigg - someone looking remarkably like him was running on the same route. If you (or anyone else) is stil thinking of doing it then I can give a bit of advice about places to stay, but there were 50,000 walkers who have done it in the last year and there are plenty of pubs / B and Bs etc.
We did it in May and are definitely only mid pack runners at best (well I am - he is a bit better than that). Of the three of us that did the whole distance, Phil James and I have done some OMMS and LAMMS ( and a 100 miles in 24 hours years ago) but John Green had never done any sort of long distance challenge. It's a good route - undulating rather than hilly.

Walked this in three days ages since with some mates from work when we were apprentices. Seem to recall staying at a place called Twice Brewed one night. Strange place.
Iam running the length of the wall on September 16th finishing on Saturday there are around 11 us doing it with a few running on Sunday (the great north run) to make it 100 miles.

Myself and a mate are looking to run this self-supported over two days next summer, probably getting the train from Manchester to Carlisle then back from Newcastle to Manchester.
has anyone got any experience of the route or this challenge at all?
i'm going to start buying the maps over the next couple of weeks, approximate mileage appears to be about 85 miles from searching on the internet.
any suggestions of good B&B's or pubs en route gratefully received!

I did a lazy three day run along Hadrian's Wall in January 2009 with a friend and his Dad, staying in a YHA in Jesmond before the start, staying in a pub in Wall at the end of the first day and then staying at my Mum's house in Brampton for the second evening. It was great fun! Since we chopped the journey into three pieces, then the pub we stayed at probably won't be of use, but it was the Hadrian Hotel, Wall, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 4EE. A decent bed for the night, good food and beer. If you tell me where you are planning on splitting the trip up then I can try to remember and/or find out of good pubs near there - I grew up in Brampton and have family up there. There is a Hadrian's Wall map - a Harveys National Trail map, I think - that should have all you need. The route is almost universally well marked, so you shouldn't need the map often. As you probably already know, the middle section is the only hilly bit, with the rest being pretty easy going. Going from Carlisle to Newcastle means you'll have a pretty flat cruise along the Tyne valley at the end.

Any recommendations on where to stay if doing this in 2 or 3 days in the middle of summer? I say middle of summer because I was thinking of a tent or bivi.
there are lots of campsites on the way, you should be spoilt for choice. I ran on a two day schedule, starting from Carlisle and stayed at the Twice Brewed Inn - the Whinshields farm campsite is close by.

we only went from Carlisle as we couldn't get there for a reasonable time via public transport. day 1 way 39 miles, day 2 36 miles. the hilliest off-road section is around miles 30-40 but the road section is quite undulating too - I seem to remember the section leaving Chollerford being very hilly.
Hi all. I'm attempting to run the wall in mid September. The plan is to do it over two days. Does anyone know of any good places to stay over night please? Eg youth hostels, or b and b?
